Sophisticated Monitoring System for Detecting Normal-Transitions in the LHD Superconducting Helical Coils

Performance of the helical coils for the large helical device in six years\u27 operation
A pair of helical coils of the large helical device is the largest pool-cooled superconducting magnet. The first excitation test up to 1.5 T was carried out at the end of March, 1998. In the first trial to charge up to the design value of 3 T, wide propagation of a normal-zone was induced at 11.45 kA, and the quench detection system acted. It was revealed that a normal-zone could propagate below the cold-end recovery current by additional heat generation due to the slow current diffusion into the thick pure aluminum stabilizer. In these six years\u27 operation, propagation of a normal-zone has been observed 17 times at almost the same current. The normal-zones were recovered within several seconds except for the wide propagation. By a detection system of the propagation with pick-up coils along the helical coils, it was disclosed that the recovered normal-zones propagated in only one side. In order to attain plasma experiments near 3 T, higher excitations were tried by the current grading method, in which the current of the innermost block is decreased and those of the other two blocks are increased. The average current of 11.67 kA was attained. The excitation tests up to the highest currents have been carried out after each cool-down. Degradation is not observed in the coil performance, and the stable operation has been demonstrated
Subaru Deep Survey VI. A Census of Lyman Break Galaxies at z=4 and 5 in the Subaru Deep Fields: Clustering Properties
We investigate the clustering properties of 2,600 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs)
at z=3.5-5.2 in two large blank fields, the Subaru Deep Field and the
Subaru/XMM Deep Field (600arcmin^2 each). The angular correlation functions of
these LBGs show a clear clustering at both z~4 and 5. The correlation lengths
are r_0= 4.1^{+0.2}_{-0.2} and 5.9^{+1.3}_{-1.7} h_{100}^{-1} Mpc (r_0=
5.1^{+1.0}_{-1.1} and 5.9^{+1.3}_{-1.7} h_{100}^{-1} Mpc) for all the detected
LBGs (for L>L* LBGs) at z~4 and 5, respectively. These correlation lengths
correspond to galaxy-dark matter biases of b_g= 2.9^{+0.1}_{-0.1} and
4.6^{+0.9}_{-1.2} (b_g=3.5^{+0.6}_{-0.7} and 4.6^{+0.9}_{-1.2}), for all the
detected LBGs (for L>L^* LBGs) at z~4 and 5, respectively. These results,
combined with estimates for z~3 LBGs in the literature, show that the
correlation length of L>L^* LBGs is almost constant, ~5 h_{100}^{-1} Mpc, over
z~3-5, while the bias monotonically increases with redshift at z>3. We also
find that for LBGs at z~4 the clustering amplitude increases with UV-continuum
luminosity and with the amount of dust extinction. We estimate the mass of dark
halos hosting various kinds of high-z galaxies including LBGs with the analytic
model given by Sheth & Tormen (1999). We find that the typical mass of dark
halos hosting L>L^* LBGs is about 1x10^{12} h_{70}^{-1}Msol over z~3-5, which
is comparable to that of the Milky Way Galaxy. A single dark halo with ~10^{12}
h_{70}^{-1} Msol is found to host 0.1-0.3 LBG on average but host about four
K-band selected galaxies.Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures, ApJ in press. Paper with high resolution

Measurement of Single and Double Spin-Flip Probabilities in Inelastic Deuteron Scattering on 12C at 270 MeV
The deuteron single and double spin-flip probabilities, S1 and S2, have been
measured for the 12C(pol{d},pol{d}') reaction at Ed = 270 MeV for an excitation
energy range between 4 and 24 MeV and a scattering angular range between
Theta_lab = 2.5 and 7.5 deg. The extracted S1 exhibits characteristic values
depending on the structure of the excited state. The S2 is close to zero over
the measured excitation energy range. The SFP angular distribution data for the
2+ (4.44 MeV) and 1+ (12.71 MeV) states are well described by the microscopic
DWIA calculations
Simultaneous sub-second hyperpolarization of the nuclear and electron spins of phosphorus in silicon
We demonstrate a method which can hyperpolarize both the electron and nuclear
spins of 31P donors in Si at low field, where both would be essentially
unpolarized in equilibrium. It is based on the selective ionization of donors
in a specific hyperfine state by optically pumping donor bound exciton
hyperfine transitions, which can be spectrally resolved in 28Si. Electron and
nuclear polarizations of 90% and 76%, respectively, are obtained in less than a
second, providing an initialization mechanism for qubits based on these spins,
and enabling further ESR and NMR studies on dilute 31P in 28Si.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
