Numerical study of higher order analogues of the Tracy-Widom distribution
We study a family of distributions that arise in critical unitary random
matrix ensembles. They are expressed as Fredholm determinants and describe the
limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue when the dimension of the
random matrices tends to infinity. The family contains the Tracy-Widom
distribution and higher order analogues of it. We compute the distributions
numerically by solving a Riemann-Hilbert problem numerically, plot the
distributions, and discuss several properties that they appear to exhibit.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
Ovine HSP90AA1 Expression Rate Is Affected by Several SNPs at the Promoter under Both Basal and Heat Stress Conditions
The aim of this work was to investigate the association between polymorphisms located at the HSP90AA1 ovine gene promoter and gene expression rate under different environmental conditions, using a mixed model approach. Blood samples from 120 unrelated rams of the Manchega sheep breed were collected at three time points differing in environmental conditions. Rams were selected on the basis of their genotype for the transversion G/C located 660 base pairs upstream the gene transcription initiation site. Animals were also genotyped for another set of 6 SNPs located at the gene promoter. Two SNPs, G/C-660 and A/G-444, were associated with gene overexpression resulting from heat stress. The composed genotype CC-660-AG-444 was the genotype having the highest expression rates with fold changes ranging from 2.2 to 3.0. The genotype AG-522 showed the highest expression levels under control conditions with a fold change of 1.4. Under these conditions, the composed genotype CC-601-TT-524-AG-522-TT-468 is expected to be correlated with higher basal expression of the gene according to genotype frequencies and linkage disequilibrium values. Some putative transcription factors were predicted for binding sites where the SNPs considered are located. Since the expression rate of the gene under alternative environmental conditions seems to depend on the composed genotype of several SNPs located at its promoter, a cooperative regulation of the transcription of the HSP90AA1 gene could be hypothesized. Nevertheless epigenetic regulation mechanisms cannot be discarded. © 2013 Salces-Ortiz et al
Predictores del estado post-ictus en el alta hospitalaria. Importancia en enfermerÃa
Nurses are often asked to predict factors that influence post-stroke outcome by the patient and family. Many studies have been carried out in order to determine the factors that influence the neurological status of the post-stroke patient at the moment of the discharge from the hospital. However, machine learning techniques have not been used for this purpose. Therefore, with the objective of obtaining association rules of neurological prognosis, a double analysis, both clinical and with machine learning techniques of the possible associations of factors that influence the neurological status of the post-stroke patients has been carried out. The Apriori algorithm detected several association rules with high confidence (≥ 95%), from which the following pattern: In patients in the age range of 50-80 years, the association of a NIHSS between 11 and 15 points (intermediate/low NIHSS), along with thrombectomy, leads to recovery ad integrum at discharge. With the SMOTE resampling technique, the 100% confidence was reached for the association of high NIHSS (>20) and involvement of the carotid and basilar arteries, with a dire prognosis (exitus). These rules confirm, for the first time with machine learning, the importance of the association of some predictors, in the post-stroke prognosis. The knowledge by the nurses of these association rules can successfully improve stroke outcome. In addition, the role of nurses in education programs that teach knowledge of risk factors and stroke prognosis becomes essential.
Effects of Topography and Surface Soil Cover on Erosion for Mining Reclamation: The Experimental Spoil Heap at El Machorro Mine (Central Spain)
Mining reclamation tries to reduce environmental impacts, including accelerated runoff, erosion and sediment load in the nearby fluvial networks and their ecosystems. This study compares the effects of topography and surface soil cover on erosion on man-made slopes coming from surface mining reclamation in Central Spain. Two topographic profiles, linear and concave, with two surface soil covers, subsoil and topsoil, were monitored for two hydrologic years. Sediment load, rill development and plant colonization from the four profiles were measured under field conditions. The results show that, in the case of this experiment, a thick and non-compacted topsoil cover on a linear slope yielded less sediment than carbonate colluvium or topsoil cover on a concave slope. This study also shows that vegetation establishment, which plays an important role in erosion control, depends on topography. Plant cover was more widespread and more homogeneous on linear profiles with topsoil cover. On concave slopes, plant establishment was severely limited on the steepest upper part and favoured in the bottom. This study suggests that management of topography and surface soil cover should be approached systematically, taking three outcomes into consideration: (i) topsoil can lead to a successful mining reclamation regardless of topography, (ii) created concave slopes can lead to a successful mining reclamation and (iii) topography determines the vegetation colonization pattern. The experiment was funded by a research contract between the Spanish mining company

Application of molecular topology to the prediction of inhibition of Trypanosoma cruzi Hexokinase by bisphosphonates
A topological-mathematical model has been arranged to search for new derivatives of bisphosphonate compounds acting
as inhibitors against Trypanosoma cruzi hexokinase. By using linear discriminant analysis, a four-variable function was
achieved allowing an accurate prediction of the IC50 for each compound of the training and test series. After carrying
out a virtual screening based upon such a model, new structures potentially actives against T. cruzi are proposed.Este trabajo ha sido posible gracias al Fondo de Investigación Sanitaria, Ministerio de Sanidad, España (proyecto SAF2005-PIO52128) y al Máster Internacional en Enfermedades Parasitarias Tropicales, Universidad de Valencia
Endothelial adhesion receptors are recruited to adherent leukocytes by inclusion in preformed tetraspanin nanoplatforms
VCAM-1 and ICAM-1, receptors for leukocyte integrins, are recruited to cell–cell contact sites on the apical membrane of activated endothelial cells. In this study, we show that this recruitment is independent of ligand engagement, actin cytoskeleton anchorage, and heterodimer formation. Instead, VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 are recruited by inclusion within specialized preformed tetraspanin-enriched microdomains, which act as endothelial adhesive platforms (EAPs). Using advanced analytical fluorescence techniques, we have characterized the diffusion properties at the single-molecule level, nanoscale organization, and specific intradomain molecular interactions of EAPs in living primary endothelial cells. This study provides compelling evidence for the existence of EAPs as physical entities at the plasma membrane, distinct from lipid rafts. Scanning electron microscopy of immunogold-labeled samples treated with a specific tetraspanin-blocking peptide identify nanoclustering of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 within EAPs as a novel mechanism for supramolecular organization that regulates the leukocyte integrin–binding capacity of both endothelial receptors during extravasation
Symmetry characterization of eigenstates in opal-based photonic crystals
The complete symmetry characterization of eigenstates in bare opal systems is
obtained by means of group theory. This symmetry assignment has allowed us to
identify several bands that cannot couple with an incident external plane wave.
Our prediction is supported by layer-KKR calculations, which are also
performed: the coupling coefficients between bulk modes and externally excited
field tend to zero when symmetry properties mismatch.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Physical Review
