    Quantum simulation of Fermi-Hubbard models in semiconductor quantum dot arrays

    We propose a device for studying the Fermi-Hubbard model with long-range Coulomb interactions using an array of quantum dots defined in a semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas system. Bands with energies above the lowest energy band are used to form the Hubbard model, which allows for an experimentally simpler realization of the device. We find that depending on average electron density, the system is well described by a one- or two-band Hubbard model. Our device design enables the control of the ratio of the Coulomb interaction to the kinetic energy of the electrons independently to the filling of the quantum dots, such that a large portion of the Hubbard phase diagram may be probed. Estimates of the Hubbard parameters suggest that a metal-Mott insulator quantum phase transition and a d-wave superconducting phase should be observable using current fabrication technologies.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

    Scalable Spin Amplification with a Gain over a Hundred

    We propose a scalable and practical implementation of spin amplification which does not require individual addressing nor a specially tailored spin network. We have demonstrated a gain of 140 in a solid-state nuclear spin system of which the spin polarization has been increased to 0.12 using dynamic nuclear polarization with photoexcited triplet electron spins. Spin amplification scalable to a higher gain opens the door to the single spin measurement for a readout of quantum computers as well as practical applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to infinitesimal samples which have been concealed by thermal noise.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    The role played by cell-substrate interactions in the pathogenesis of osteoclast-mediated peri-implant osteolysis

    Prosthetic wear debris-induced peri-implant osteolysis is a major cause of aseptic loosening after total joint replacement. In this condition, wear particles released from the implant components induce a granulomatous inflammatory reaction at the interface between implant and adjacent bone, leading to progressive bone resorption and loss of fixation. The present study was undertaken to characterize definitively the phenotype of osteoclast-like cells associated with regions of peri-implant focal bone resorption and to compare the phenotypic features of these cells with those of mononucleated and multinucleated cells associated with polyethylene wear particles. Peri-implant tissues were obtained from patients undergoing hip revision surgery for aseptic loosening after total joint replacement. Cells were examined for the expression of several markers associated with the osteoclast phenotype using immunohistochemistry, histochemistry, and/or in situ hybridization. CD68 protein, a marker expressed by multiple macrophage lineage cell types, was detected in mononucleated and multinucleated cells associated with polyethylene particles and the bone surface. Cathepsin K and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase were expressed highly in both mononucleated and multinucleated cells associated with the bone surface. Levels of expression were much lower in cells associated with polyethylene particles. High levels of Ξ²(3 )integrin protein were detected in cells in contact with bone. Multinucleated cells associated with polyethylene particles exhibited faint positive staining. Calcitonin receptor mRNA expression was detected solely in multinucleated cells present in resorption lacunae on the bone surface and was absent in cells associated with polyethylene particles. Our findings provide further evidence that cells expressing the full repertoire of osteoclast phenotypic markers are involved in the pathogenesis of peri-implant osteolysis after total joint replacement. They also demonstrate that foreign body giant cells, although believed to be phenotypically and functionally distinct from osteoclasts, express many osteoclast-associated genes and gene products. However, the levels and patterns of expression of these genes in the two cell types differ. We speculate that, in addition to the role of cytokines and growth factors, the substrate with which these cells interact plays a critical role in their differential phenotypic and functional properties

    Rotational level structure of sodium isotopes inside the "island of inversion"

    The neutron-rich nuclei 33,34,35Na were studied via in-beam Ξ³-ray spectroscopy following nucleon removal reactions from a 36Mg secondary beam at ~220 MeV/u. Excited states of 34,35Na are reported for the first time. A third transition was observed for 33Na in addition to the known 7/2+ 1 β†’ 5/2+ 1 β†’ 3/2+ g.s. cascade and is suggested to be the 9/2+ 1 β†’ 7/2+ 1 transition. Similarly, a 7/2+ 1 β†’ 5/2+ 1 β†’ 3/2+ g.s. cascade is proposed for the decay pattern observed for 35Na. The transition energy ratios are close to expectation values for K = 3/2 rotational bands in the strong coupling limit. Comparisons to large-scale shell model calculations in the sd-p f model space support the spin-parity assignments. Β© The Author(s) 2014.published_or_final_versio

    Induction of human regulatory innate lymphoid cells from group 2 innate lymphoid cells by retinoic acid

    BACKGROUND: Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) play critical roles in induction and exacerbation of allergic airway inflammation. Thus, clarification of the mechanisms that underlie the regulation of ILC2 activation has received significant attention. Although ILCs are divided into three major subsets that mirror helper effector T-cell subsets, counterpart subsets of regulatory T (Treg) cells have not been well characterized. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the factors that induce regulatory ILCs (ILCregs). METHODS: IL-10+ ILCregs induced from ILC2s by retinoic acid (RA) were analyzed using RNA-sequencing and flow cytometry. ILCregs were evaluated in human nasal tissues from healthy individuals and patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyp (CRSwNP), and in lung tissues from house dust mite (HDM)- or saline-treated mice. RESULTS: RA induced IL-10 secretion by human ILC2s, but not type-2 cytokines. IL-10+ ILCregs, converted from ILC2s by RA stimulation, expressed a Treg-like signature with the expression of IL-10, CTLA-4 and CD25, with down regulated effector type 2-related markers such as CRTH-2 and ST2, and suppressed activation of CD4+ T cells and ILC2s. ILCregs were rarely detected in human nasal tissue from healthy individuals or lung tissues from saline-treated mice, but were increased in nasal tissues from patients with CRSwNP and in lung tissues from HDM-treated mice. Enzymes for RA synthesis were up-regulated in airway epithelial cells during type-2 inflammation in vivo and by IL-13 in vitro. CONCLUSION: We have identified a unique immune regulatory and anti-inflammatory pathway by which RA converts ILC2s to ILCregs. Interactions between airway epithelial cells and ILC2s play an important roles in the generation of ILCregs

    Prognostic Value of FDG-PET in Patients with Oropharyngeal Carcinoma Treated with Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of 2-deoxy-2-[F-18] fluoro-D-glucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) following concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) on survival in patients with carcinoma of the oropharynx (OPC). Methods: Eighteen patients with primary OPC who underwent PET pre- and post-CRT were evaluated prospectively for survival. The prognostic performance of post-CRT PET and CT for recurrence was compared. Results: Patients with positive post-CRT PET exhibited significantly lower 2-year cause-specific survival and disease-free survival (50 % vs. 91%, PG0.05 and 0 % vs. 83%, PG0.0001); however, patients with positive post-CRT CT did not exhibit any significant difference (67 % vs. 83%, P= 0.416 and 50 % vs. 75%, P=0.070). Other factors, such as clinical and pre-CRT PET variables, also did not indicate any significant difference. The accuracy of prediction of residual and local recurrence for post-CRT PET and CT (local%/regional%) was 83%/94 % and 83%/78%, respectively. Conclusion: OPC patients with positive post-CRT PET exhibit poor survival. The prognostic accuracy of post-CRT PET is superior to that of CT. The results of post-CRT FDG-PET should be included in the management of the OPC patients

    We examine the interplay of surface and volume effects in systems undergoing heat flow. In particular, we compute the thermal conductivity in the FPU Ξ²\beta model as a function of temperature and lattice size, and scaling arguments are used to provide analytic guidance. From this we show that boundary temperature jumps can be quantitatively understood, and that they play an important role in determining the dynamics of the system, relating soliton dynamics, kinetic theory and Fourier transport.Comment: 5pages, 5 figure

    Clinical and Functional Characterization of URAT1 Variants

    Idiopathic renal hypouricaemia is an inherited form of hypouricaemia, associated with abnormal renal handling of uric acid. There is excessive urinary wasting of uric acid resulting in hypouricaemia. Patients may be asymptomatic, but the persistent urinary abnormalities may manifest as renal stone disease, and hypouricaemia may manifest as exercise induced acute kidney injury. Here we have identified Macedonian and British patients with hypouricaemia, who presented with a variety of renal symptoms and signs including renal stone disease, hematuria, pyelonephritis and nephrocalcinosis. We have identified heterozygous missense mutations in SLC22A12 encoding the urate transporter protein URAT1 and correlate these genetic findings with functional characterization. Urate handling was determined using uptake experiments in HEK293 cells. This data highlights the importance of the URAT1 renal urate transporter in determining serum urate concentrations and the clinical phenotypes, including nephrolithiasis, that should prompt the clinician to suspect an inherited form of renal hypouricaemia

    Detection of sentinel and non-sentinel lymph node micrometastases by complete serial sectioning and immunohistochemical analysis for gastric cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We investigated the presence and distribution of the sentinel and the non-sentinel node micrometastases using complete serial sectioning and immunohistochemical staining (IHC), to inspect whether lymph node micrometastases spread to the sentinel lymph nodes first.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 35 patients, who underwent gastrectomy with a sentinel lymph node biopsy for gastric cancer, were enrolled in this study. Total of 1028 lymph nodes of 35 patients having gastric cancer without metastasis of lymph node by permanent section with hematoxylin and eosin staining (H&E) were selected. There were 252 sentinel nodes and the other 776 were non-sentinel nodes. All nodes were sectioned serially and stained alternately with H&E and IHC. Lymph node micrometastases was defined as proving to be positive first either the IHC or the complete serial sectioning.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Micrometastases were detected in 4 (11%) of the 35 patients, 6 (0.58%) of 1028 nodes. Of these 4 patients, 3 had micrometastases exclusively in sentinel nodes, and the other had micrometastasis in both sentinel and non-sentinel nodes. There was no patient who had the micrometasitases only in non-sentinel nodes.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results support the concept that lymph node micrometastasis of gastric cancer spreads first to sentinel nodes.</p
