The growth of deactivated layers on CsI(Na) scintillating crystals

    Get PDF
An effective and sensitive measurement of the depth of a deactivated or dead layer can be obtained from the relative attenuation of the 22.162 KeV and 87.9 KeV X-rays emitted by Cd 109. The alpha-particles emitted by Am 241 are also useful in measuring dead layers less than 25 microns. The properties and temporal development of dead layers are discussed in detail. The rate of growth of a deal layer is closely related to the ambient humidity, and the damage to the crystal is irreversible by any known process. The dead layer can be minimized by polishing all crystal surfaces and by keeping the crystal in a vacuum or a dry atmosphere. Since a dead layer seriously inhibits the response of a crystal to X-rays of energies below approximately 20 keV, CsI(Na) detectors should not be used at these energies unless precautions are taken to ensure that no dead layer forms

Are interventions for improving the quality of services provided by specialized drug shops effective in sub-Saharan Africa? A systematic review of the literature.

PURPOSE: We set out to determine effectiveness of interventions for improving the quality of services provided by specialized drug shops in sub-Saharan Africa. DATA SOURCES: We searched PubMed, CAB Abstracts, Web of Science, PsycINFO and Eldis databases and websites for organizations such as WHO and Management Sciences for Health. Finally, we searched manually through the references of retrieved articles. STUDY SELECTION: Our search strategy included randomized trials, time-series studies and before and after studies evaluating six interventions; education, peer review, reorganizing administrative structures, incentives, regulation and legislation. DATA EXTRACTION: We extracted information on design features, participants, interventions and outcomes assessed studies for methodological quality, and extracted results, all using uniform checklists. RESULTS OF DATA SYNTHESIS: We obtained 10 studies, all implementing educational interventions. Outcome measures were heterogeneous and included knowledge, communication and dispensing practices. Education improved knowledge across studies, but gave mixed results on communication between sellers and clients, dispensing of appropriate treatments and referring of patients to health facilities. Profit incentives appeared to constrain behaviour change in certain instances, although cases of shops adopting practices at the expense of sales revenue were also reported. CONCLUSION: Evidence suggests that knowledge and practices of pharmacies and drug shops can be improved across a range of diseases and countries/regions, although variations were reported across studies. Profit incentives appear to bear some influence on the level of success of interventions. More work is required to extend the geographical base of evidence, investigate cost-effectiveness and evaluate sustainability of interventions over periods longer than 1 year

Localization of Electromagnetic Fields in Disordered Fano Metamaterials

We present the first study of disorder in planar metamaterials consisting of strongly interacting metamolecules, where coupled electric dipole and magnetic dipole modes give rise to a Fano-type resonant response and show that positional disorder leads to light localization inherently linked to collective magnetic dipole excitations. We demonstrate that the magnetic excitation persists in disordered arrays and results in the formation of "magnetic hot-spots"

Cubic spline prewavelets on the four-directional mesh

In this paper, we design differentiable, two dimensional, piecewise polynomial cubic prewavelets of particularly small compact support. They are given in closed form, and provide stable, orthogonal decompositions of L^2(\RR^2). In particular, the splines we use in our prewavelet constructions give rise to stable bases of spline spaces that contain all cubic polynomials, whereas the more familiar box spline constructions cannot reproduce all cubic polynomials, unless resorting to a box spline of higher polynomial degree

Photoproduction Processes in Polarized ep - Collisions at HERA

    Get PDF
We study various conceivable photoproduction reactions in a polarized ep collider mode of HERA with respect to their sensitivity to the proton's polarized gluon distribution. A special emphasis is put on the `resolved' part of the cross sections which in principle opens the possibility to determine for the first time also the completely unknown parton content of longitudinally polarized photons. In the very promising case of dijet production we also investigate the impact of parton showering, hadronization and jet finding on the parton level results.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 7 figures, uses epsfig, amssymb, and a41 (included) styles; Contribution to the proceedings of the 1997 workshop on 'Physics with Polarized Protons at HERA', Hamburg and Zeuthen, Germany, March-September 199

Holographic capture of femtosecond pulse propagation

    Get PDF
We have implemented a holographic system to study the propagation of femtosecond laser pulses with high temporal (150 fs) and spatial resolutions (4 µm). The phase information in the holograms allows us to reconstruct both positive and negative index changes due to the Kerr nonlinearity (positive) and plasma formation (negative), and to reconstruct three-dimensional structure. Dramatic differences were observed in the interaction of focused femtosecond pulses with air, water, and carbon disulfide. The air becomes ionized in the focal region, while in water long plasma filaments appear before the light reaches a tight focus. In contrast, in carbon disulfide the optical beam breaks up into multiple filaments but no plasma is measured. We explain these different propagation regimes in terms of the different nonlinear material properties
