Experiences and Perceptions of Novice Associate Degree Nursing Faculty Assuming a Classroom Instructors Role

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research was to explore the classroom experiences and perceptions of novice faculty in the classroom setting of an Associate Degree of Nursing programs, located in community colleges. The transition from expert practitioner to novice teacher can be a difficult experience for new classroom nursing instructors. Novice nursing faculty often has very limited educational preparation or background in classroom instruction skills. Nursing research, typically conducted at university level, has minimal applicability for the community college nursing programs. Community colleges educate sixty percent of the graduate Registered Nurses in the United States and have scant research into their programs and faculties. Historically, faculty in registered nursing programs is hired for expert clinical skills in a specific area of nursing practice. Participant inclusion for this study was limited to novice faculty in Associate Degree of Nursing programs located in the community college setting. The study was specific to instructors with classroom lecture assignments and with less than four years teaching. The participants did not have prior instructional or educational experience in the college classroom instructor role. Participating community colleges in this investigative research were in southern Louisiana and Mississippi. Qualitative emergent research was conducted to explore the perceptions of the novice faculty prior to and after assumption of the teaching role. Lived experiences were described using semi-structured interviews that provided the opportunity for narratives which shared experiences of the transition to nursing educator process. Unexpected student cultures, attitudes, and uncivil behaviors, and lack of academic orientations were components of the findings in this research. However, the overall love of teaching and nursing education was communicated by all of the participants. I love to teach was the overwhelming reason the instructors had selected academics. The transition from the role clinical expert in the practice setting to the role of academic novice faculty in a community college setting can be chaotic and filled with unexpected issues. Effective preparation with administrative support and resources can enhance the career transition to produce a successful and confident nursing instructor

Aim: to assess sex-specific impacts of heavier body armour in law enforcement officers completing occupational tasks.Design: A randomized counter-balanced study.Method: Ten qualified police officers of which six were female (mean height = 167.97 ± 3.67 cm, mean mass= 65.30 ± 10.57 kg) and four were male (mean height = 82.15 ± 6.98 cm, mean weight = 85.55 ± 9.96 kg) completed a functional movement screen for mobility and three occupational tasks wearing a law enforcement (2.1 kg) or military (6.4 kg) body armour system. Following paired samples t-tests, effect sizes(d) were calculated for the between-body armour type comparisons. Bond University Human Research Ethics Committee provided ethics approval (RO15803).Results: When military body armour was worn, female officers experienced a greater impact on their car exit and victim drag (d = 0.37, 0.02 respectively) when compared to males (d = 0.12, -0.41 respectively).Alternatively, male officers experienced a greater impact on their mobility and agility (d = -1.29, 0.57 respectively) when compared to females (d = -0.98, 0.31 respectively). Conclusion: Wearing heavier body armour had a greater effect on female officers in the car exit and victim drag measures and on male officers in the functional movement screen and agility measures. The impacts of wearing heavier body armour should not be considered the same between the sexes.Key Practice Points:• Heavy body armour systems may impede the sexes differently warranting consideration when rehabilitating and reconditioning police officers to return-to-work following injury

Aim: to assess sex-specific differences in wearability and comfort when wearing body armour.Design: A randomized counter-balanced study.Method: Ten participants (females n = 6, mean height = 167.97 ± 3.67 cm, mean mass = 65.30 ± 10.57 kg: males n = 4, mean height = 82.15 ± 6.98 cm, mean weight = 85.55 ± 9.96 kg) were included following eligibility criteria and assessed against occupational tasks for which they gave subjective feedback when wearing a law enforcement (2.1 kg) and military (6.4 kg) body armour system. Subjective feedback was provided on mannequin sketches and compared between sexes and body armour types. Bond University Human Research Ethics Committee provided ethics approval (RO15803).Results: Greater negative feedback was received, subjectively, from both sexes regarding the military body armour. Female participants recorded areas of most discomfort to include the neck, shoulder, chest, and hip, whilst males recorded areas to be the neck, shoulder, and abdomen. Females reported greater subjective concerns than males regarding body armour fit. Conclusion: With levels of discomfort associated with injury in police officers wearing body armour, the comfort and fit of body armour and differences between sexes must be considered. These differences require consideration when returning injured officers back to work, especially following brachial plexus palsy and meralgia paresthetica injuries.</div

Ecological and Phenotypic Diversification after a Continental Invasion in Neotropical Freshwater Stingrays

Habitat transitions are key potential explanations for why some lineages have diversified and others have not—from Anolis lizards to Darwin\u27s finches. The ecological ramifications of marine-to-freshwater transitions for fishes suggest evolutionary contingency: some lineages maintain their ancestral niches in novel habitats (niche conservatism), whereas others alter their ecological role. However, few studies have considered phenotypic, ecological, and lineage diversification concurrently to explore this issue. Here, we investigated the macroevolutionary history of the taxonomically and ecologically diverse Neotropical freshwater river rays (subfamily Potamotrygoninae), which invaded and diversified in the Amazon and other South American rivers during the late Oligocene to early Miocene. We generated a time-calibrated, multi-gene phylogeny for Potamotrygoninae and reconstructed evolutionary patterns of diet specialization. We measured functional morphological traits relevant for feeding and used comparative phylogenetic methods to examine how feeding morphology diversified over time. Potamotrygonine trophic and phenotypic diversity are evenly partitioned (non-overlapping) among internal clades for most of their history, until 20–16 mya, when more recent diversification suggests increasing overlap among phenotypes. Specialized piscivores (Heliotrygon and Paratrygon) evolved early in the history of freshwater stingrays, while later trophic specialization (molluscivory, insectivory, and crustacivory) evolved in the genus Potamotrygon. Potamotrygonins demonstrate ecological niche lability in diets and feeding apparatus; however, diversification has mostly been a gradual process through time. We suggest that competition is unlikely to have limited the potamotrygonine invasion and diversification in South America

The Classification of Obsessive–Compulsive and Related Disorders in the ICD-11

    Get PDF
Background To present the rationale for the new Obsessive–Compulsive and Related Disorders (OCRD) grouping in the Mental and Behavioural Disorders chapter of the Eleventh Revision of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), including the conceptualization and essential features of disorders in this grouping. Methods Review of the recommendations of the ICD-11 Working Group on the Classification for OCRD. These sought to maximize clinical utility, global applicability, and scientific validity. Results The rationale for the grouping is based on common clinical features of included disorders including repetitive unwanted thoughts and associated behaviours, and is supported by emerging evidence from imaging, neurochemical, and genetic studies. The proposed grouping includes obsessive–compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, hypochondriasis, olfactory reference disorder, and hoarding disorder. Body-focused repetitive behaviour disorders, including trichotillomania and excoriation disorder are also included. Tourette disorder, a neurological disorder in ICD-11, and personality disorder with anankastic features, a personality disorder in ICD-11, are recommended for cross-referencing. Limitations Alternative nosological conceptualizations have been described in the literature and have some merit and empirical basis. Further work is needed to determine whether the proposed ICD-11 OCRD grouping and diagnostic guidelines are mostly likely to achieve the goals of maximizing clinical utility and global applicability. Conclusion It is anticipated that creation of an OCRD grouping will contribute to accurate identification and appropriate treatment of affected patients as well as research efforts aimed at improving our understanding of the prevalence, assessment, and management of its constituent disorders
