Volume Fractions of the Kinematic "Near-Critical" Sets of the Quantum Ensemble Control Landscape
An estimate is derived for the volume fraction of a subset in the neighborhood
of the critical set
of the kinematic quantum ensemble control landscape J(U) = Tr(U\rho U' O),
where represents the unitary time evolution operator, {\rho} is the initial
density matrix of the ensemble, and O is an observable operator. This estimate
is based on the Hilbert-Schmidt geometry for the unitary group and a
first-order approximation of . An upper bound on these
near-critical volumes is conjectured and supported by numerical simulation,
leading to an asymptotic analysis as the dimension of the quantum system
rises in which the volume fractions of these "near-critical" sets decrease to
zero as increases. This result helps explain the apparent lack of influence

Unified analysis of terminal-time control in classical and quantum systems
Many phenomena in physics, chemistry, and biology involve seeking an optimal
control to maximize an objective for a classical or quantum system which is
open and interacting with its environment. The complexity of finding an optimal
control for maximizing an objective is strongly affected by the possible
existence of sub-optimal maxima. Within a unified framework under specified
conditions, control objectives for maximizing at a terminal time physical
observables of open classical and quantum systems are shown to be inherently
free of sub-optimal maxima. This attractive feature is of central importance
for enabling the discovery of controls in a seamless fashion in a wide range of
phenomena transcending the quantum and classical regimes.Comment: 10 page
Credit bureaus between risk-management, creditworthiness assessment and prudential supervision

Across Europe there is no common practice of sharing the credit data of consumers which can be used for several purposes. Mostly, they are used by the lending industry as a practice of creditworthiness assessment or as a risk-management tool to underwrite borrowing decisions or price risk. However, the type, breath, and depth of information differ greatly from country to country. In some Member States, consumer data are part of a broader information centralisation system for the prudential supervision of banks and the financial system as a whole. Despite EU rules on credit to consumers for the creation of the internal market, the underlying consumer data infrastructure remains fragmented at national level, failing to achieve univocal, common, or defined policy objectives under a harmonised legal framework. Likewise, the establishment of the Banking Union and the prudential supervision of the Euro area demand standardisation and convergence of the data used to measure debt levels, arrears, and delinquencies. The many functions and usages of credit data suggest that the policy goals to be achieved should inform the legal and institutional framework of Credit Bureaus, as well as the design and use of the databases. This is also because fundamental rights and consumer protection concerns arise from the sharing of credit data and their expanding use
The CH fraction of Carbon stars at high Galactic latitudes
CH stars form a distinct class of objects with characteristic properties like
iron deficiency, enrichment of carbon and overabundance in heavy elements.
These properties can provide strong observational constraints for theoretical
computation of nucleosynthesis at low-metallicity. An important question is the
relative surface density of CH stars which can provide valuable inputs to our
understanding on the role of low to intermediate-mass stars in the early
Galactic chemical evolution. Spectroscopic characterization provides an
effective way of identifying CH stars. The present analysis is aimed at a
quantitative assessment of the fraction of CH stars in a sample of stars using
a set of spectral classification criteria. The sample consists of 92 objects
selected from a collection of candidate Faint High Latitude Carbon stars from
the Hamburg/ESO survey. Medium resolution (R ~ 1300) spectra for these objects
were obtained using OMR at VBO, Kavalur and HFOSC at HCT, IAO, Hanle, during
2007 - 2009 spanning a wavelength range 3800 - 6800 A. Spectral analysis shows
36 of the 92 objects to be potential CH stars; combined with our earlier
studies (Goswami 2005, Goswami et al. 2007) this implies ~ 37% (of 243) objects
as the CH fraction. We present spectral descriptions of the newly identified CH
star candidates. Estimated effective temperatures, 12C/13C isotopic ratios and
their locations on the two colour J-H vs H-K plot are used to support their

Visual ecology of aphids – a critical review on the role of colours in host finding
We review the rich literature on behavioural responses of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) to stimuli of different colours. Only in one species there are adequate physiological data on spectral sensitivity to explain behaviour crisply in mechanistic terms.
Because of the great interest in aphid responses to coloured targets from an evolutionary, ecological and applied perspective, there is a substantial need to expand these studies to more species of aphids, and to quantify spectral properties of stimuli rigorously. We show that aphid responses to colours, at least for some species, are likely based on a specific colour opponency mechanism, with positive input from the green domain of the spectrum and negative input from the blue and/or UV region.
We further demonstrate that the usual yellow preference of aphids encountered in field experiments is not a true colour preference but involves additional brightness effects. We discuss the implications for agriculture and sensory ecology, with special respect to the recent debate on autumn leaf colouration. We illustrate that recent evolutionary theories concerning aphid–tree interactions imply far-reaching assumptions on aphid responses to colours
that are not likely to hold. Finally we also discuss the
implications for developing and optimising strategies
of aphid control and monitoring

Algal community membership of estuarine mudflats from the Savannah River, United States
Algae represent a large and diverse group of photosynthetic organisms inhabiting all aquatic habitats. Although the traditional assessment of algal diversity relies mainly on microscopy-based morphological identification, certain limitations exist. In this study, we present a combined molecular and morphological assessment of algal diversity in mudflats from the Savannah River Estuary, Georgia. High diversity of diatoms was documented, and less than 20% of the algal community was physiologically active at the time of collection. From the total genomic DNA extracted from the field samples and lab isolates, 18S rDNA sequences were PCR amplified, cloned, sequenced, identified, and then compared to the taxa identified via microscopy. Only a few of the DNA sequences matched documented taxa, and the abundance of particular algal species was limited to morphological analysis. Surprisingly, upon examination of the remaining lysis buffer from the mechanical lysis step of algal cells, diatom species were left intact even in the presence of a detergent indicating that the diatom species resistant to lysis could be easily underrepresented. Generation of additional algal sequences data, tied to accurate taxonomic identification, is essential to current environmental sequencing projects and potentially would allow faster acquisition of algal community structure within these unique environments

Conserved community structure and simultaneous divergence events in the fig wasps associated with Ficus benjamina in Australia and China
Localised patterns of species diversity can be influenced by many factors, including regional species pools, biogeographic features and interspecific interactions. Despite recognition of these issues, we still know surprisingly little about how invertebrate biodiversity is structured across geographic scales. In particular, there have been few studies of how insect communities vary geographically while using the same plant host. We compared the composition (species, genera) and functional structure (guilds) of the chalcid wasp communities associated with the widespread fig tree, Ficus benjamina, towards the northern (Hainan province, China) and southern (Queensland, Australia) edges of its natural range. Sequence data were generated for nuclear and mtDNA markers and used to delimit species, and Bayesian divergence analyses were used to test patterns of community cohesion through evolutionary time. Both communities host at least 14 fig wasp species, but no species are shared across continents. Community composition is similar at the genus level, with six genera shared although some differ in species diversity between China and Australia; a further three genera occur in only China or Australia. Community functional structure remains very similar in terms of numbers of species in each ecological guild despite community composition differing a little (genera) or a lot (species), depending on taxonomic level. Bayesian clustering analyses favour a single community divergence event across continents over multiple events for different ecological guilds. Molecular dating estimates of lineage splits between nearest inter-continental species pairs are broadly consistent with a scenario of synchronous community divergence from a shared "ancestral community". Fig wasp community structure and genus-level composition are largely conserved in a wide geographic comparison between China and Australia. Moreover, dating analyses suggest that the functional community structure has remained stable for long periods during historic range expansions. This suggests that ecological interactions between species may play a persistent role in shaping these communities, in contrast to findings in some comparable temperate systems
