The Holographic Life of the eta'
In the string holographic dual of large-N_c QCD with N_f flavours of
Kruczenski et al, the eta' meson is massless at infinite N_c and dual to a
collective fluctuation of N_f D6-brane probes in a supergravity background.
Here we identify the string diagrams responsible for the generation of a mass
of order N_f/N_c, consistent with the Witten-Veneziano formula, and show that
the supregravity limit of these diagrams corresponds to mixings with
pseudoscalar glueballs. We argue that the dependence on the theta-angle in the
supergravity description occurs only through the combination theta + 2
\sqrt{N_f} eta' / f_pi, as dictated by the U(1) anomaly. We provide a
quantitative test by computing the linear term in the eta' potential in two
independent ways, with perfect agreement.Comment: 1+26 pages, 8 figures; V4: Appendix added, version published in JHE
Orbital maneuvering end effectors
This invention relates to an end effector device for grasping and maneuvering objects such as berthing handles of a space telescope. The device includes a V-shaped capture window defined as inclined surfaces in parallel face plates which converge toward a retainer recess in which the handle is retained. A pivotal finger (30) meshes with a pair of pivoted fingers which rotate in counterrotation. The fingers rotate to pull a handle within the capture window into recess where latches lock handle in the recess. To align the capture window, plates may be cocked plus or minus five degrees on base. Drive means is included in the form of a motor coupled with a harmonic drive speed reducer, which provides for slow movement of the fingers at a high torque so that large articles may be handled. Novelty of the invention is believed to reside in the combined intermeshing finger structure, drive means and the harmonic drive speed reducer, which features provide the required maneuverability and strength
Irrigation management with remote sensing
Two visible/near IR hand held radiometers and a hand held thermoradiometer were used along with soil moisture and lysimetric measurements in a study of soil moisture distribution in afalfa fields on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project near farmington, New Mexico. Radiances from irrigated plots were measured and converted to reflectances. Surface soil water contents (o cm to 4 cm) were determined gravimetrically on samples collected at the same time as the spectral measurements. The relationship between the spectral measurements and the crop coefficient were evaluated to demonstrate potential for using spectral measurement to estimate crop coefficient
Liquid-Drop Model and Quantum Resistance Against Noncompact Nuclear Geometries
The importance of quantum effects for exotic nuclear shapes is demonstrated.
Based on the example of a sheet of nuclear matter of infinite lateral
dimensions but finite thickness, it is shown that the quantization of states in
momentum space, resulting from the confinement of the nucleonic motion in the
conjugate geometrical space, generates a strong resistance against such a
confinement and generates restoring forces driving the system towards compact
geometries. In the liquid-drop model, these quantum effects are implicitly
included in the surface energy term, via a choice of interaction parameters, an
approximation that has been found valid for compact shapes, but has not yet
been scrutinized for exotic shapes.Comment: 9 pages with 3 figure

Sea surface and remotely sensed temperatures off Cape Mendocino, California
During September 3 to 5, 1979, a multisensor oceanographic experiment was conducted off Cape Mendocino, California. The purpose of this experiment was to validate the use of remote sensing techniques over an area along the U.S. west coast where coasted upwelling is known to be intense. Remotely sensed mutlispectral data, including thermal infrared imagery, were collected above an upwelling feature off Cape Mendocino. Data were acquired from the TIRNOS-N and NOAA-6 polar orbiting satellites, the NASA Ames Research Center's high altitude U-2 aircraft, and a U.S. Coast Guard C-130 aircraft. Supporting surface truth data over the same feature were collected aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ship, OCEANOGRAPHER. Atmospheric soundings were also taken aboard the ship. The results indicate that shipboard measurements of sea surface temperatures can be reproduction within 1 C or better through remote observation of absolute infrared radiance values (whether measured aboard the NOAA polar orbiting satellite, the U-2 aircraft, or the Coast Guard aircraft) by using appropriate atmospheric corrections. Also, the patterns of sea surface temperature which were derived independently from the various remote platforms provide a consistent interpretation of the surface temperature field
Open timelike curves violate Heisenberg's uncertainty principle
Toy models for quantum evolution in the presence of closed timelike curves
(CTCs) have gained attention in the recent literature due to the strange
effects they predict. The circuits that give rise to these effects appear quite
abstract and contrived, as they require non-trivial interactions between the
future and past which lead to infinitely recursive equations. We consider the
special case in which there is no interaction inside the CTC, referred to as an
open timelike curve (OTC), for which the only local effect is to increase the
time elapsed by a clock carried by the system. Remarkably, circuits with access
to OTCs are shown to violate Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, allowing
perfect state discrimination and perfect cloning of coherent states. The model
is extended to wave-packets and smoothly recovers standard quantum mechanics in
an appropriate physical limit. The analogy with general relativistic
time-dilation suggests that OTCs provide a novel alternative to existing
proposals for the behaviour of quantum systems under gravity
Black Holes with a Generalized Gravitational Action
Microscopic black holes are sensitive to higher dimension operators in the
gravitational action. We compute the influence of these operators on the
Schwarzschild solution using perturbation theory. All (time reversal invariant)
operators of dimension six are included (dimension four operators don't alter
the Schwarzschild solution). Corrections to the relation between the Hawking
temperature and the black hole mass are found. The entropy is calculated using
the Gibbons-Hawking prescription for the Euclidean path integral and using
naive thermodynamic reasoning. These two methods agree, however, the entropy is
not equal to 1/4 the area of the horizon.Comment: plain tex(uses phyzzx.tex), 8 pages, CALT-68-185
