The purpose of this paper is to examine whether a variety of factors encountered by college students influence choice of college major for undergraduate business students. We examine factors including introductory courses, importance of professors, professor use of classroom resources, professor’s discussion of career and future employment options, employment potential, future earnings potential as well as personal and family characteristics of a student. These findings will provide guidance for department chairs how to staff introductory courses, and professors who have the requisite work experience to emphasize future employment options and benefits of keeping families of students informed on the profession who have interested students

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether a variety of factors encountered by college students influence choice of accounting versus other college majors for undergraduate business students. We examine factors that include introduction to financial accounting, opinions of family members and friends of the family, the mentoring of high school teachers on career choice, and the information obtained from business people and recruiters. In addition, there is some evidence that the timing of the first major course taken by students in the sequence of business school courses may have an impact on choosing accounting versus other business majors. These findings will provide guidance for department chairs how to staff introductory courses, and professors who have the requisite work experience to emphasize future employment options and benefits of keeping families of students informed on the profession who have interested students

We show that heavy pure states of gravity can appear to be mixed states to almost all probes. Our arguments are made for AdS5\rm{AdS}_5 Schwarzschild black holes using the field theory dual to string theory in such spacetimes. Our results follow from applying information theoretic notions to field theory operators capable of describing very heavy states in gravity. For certain supersymmetric states of the theory, our account is exact: the microstates are described in gravity by a spacetime ``foam'', the precise details of which are invisible to almost all probes.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, Essay receiving honorable mention in the 2005 Gravity Research Foundation essay competitio

Problem Statement: As health care providers and organizations have become complex and specialized, efforts to address the spiritual needs of patients and care team members are often absent. Background: Medical advances, life-saving treatments, and increased efficiency of patient care have all come at a cost to patients and health care providers. We appropriately measure our care team’s performance with disease- and procedure-specific data on morbidity and mortality. However, these measurements come at the risk of rewriting Hippocrates’ endeavor from “cure sometimes, relieve often, comfort always” to “cure always.” The suggestion that failure is not an option is an unattainable expectation with a high price, namely the spiritual distress of care team members, patients, and their families. In 2018, The Joint Commission addressed the issue of unmet spiritual needs, stating that these needs can be associated with greater emotional distress, pain, and anxiety; higher medical care costs; and poorer quality of life. Application: In 2015, the cardiovascular service line at an academic medical center implemented a spiritual care provider position to address the unmet spiritual needs of patients and care team staff. In this article, we describe (1) the evolution of the spiritual care provider’s role and (2) the impact of this resource on the healing of patients and as a support for the personal and professional well-being of health care providers
