Preliminary analysis of the dermersal fish assemblages in the Bangladesh waters of the Bay of Bengal
This paper presents the results of analyses of the demersal fish assemblages in Bangladesh waters of the Bay of Bengal. Catch data from three trawl survey cruises from January to February 1985 covering 135 stations were utilized for community structure analysis using TWINSPAN and DCA techniques. Fisheries impacts of the CBFM-2 project: final assessment of the impact of the CBFM project on community managed fisheries in Bangladesh
Following the recommendations of earlier investigations reported by Halls and Mustafa (2006), this study reports a final assessment to address the question: ôDoes CBFM bring sustainable benefits to fisher communities? Or in other words ôDoes the CBFM workö? It employs most of the methods described by Halls & Mustafa (2006) supported by additional statistical methods including unit slope tests using and an updated set of data containing additional observations made since the time of last reporting. The same performance indicators and explanatory variables were used for the analysis. Similar to the earlier study, it also aims to identify important explanatory factors to help inform future co- or communitybased management initiatives and programmes. Technical assistance to the community-based fisheries management (CBFM) project: assessment of the impact of the CBFM project on community-managed fisheries in Bangladesh
The CBFM Output to Purpose Review 2 (OPR2) Report identified a need to further examine the impact of the CBFM activities on fisheries management performance at the local level in preparation for the final phase of the Project. This study was therefore commissioned in May 2005 specifically to determine the impact of the CBFM activities on fish production, resource sustainability and fisher well-being, whilst taking account of inter and intra-annual variation in important environmental variables such as hydrology.
GENETIC DIVERSITY OF WILD AND FARMED KALIBAUS (Labeo calbasu, Hamilton, 1822) BY RAPD ANALYSIS OF THE GENOMIC DNA
Genetic diversity of two wild Kalibaus, Labeo calbasu populations and one hatchery stock was studied using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method. The three 10–mer random primers (OPA01, OPB02 and OPC03) yielded a total of 26 reproducible and consistently scorable RAPD bands of which 15 (57.69%) were considered as polymorphic (P95) indicating a high level of genetic variation in all the studied populations. Among the three populations, Padma population shows low level of genetic diversity (0.1238) compared to other two and it might be caused by habitat degradation in many ways which ultimately affects the genetic variation of Kalibaus. The UPGMA dendrogram based on Nei’s (1972) original measures of genetic distance (D) indicated the segregation of two wild and hatchery populations of L. calbasu into two distinct clusters: the Hatchery and Padma populations produced one cluster whereas the Jamuna population belonged to another cluster. This indicates that hatchery brood stock is derived from Padma River. Nevertheless, the preliminary study revealed that RAPD technique could be an effective tool in the assessment of population genetic structure of Kalibaus
Population dynamics and the management of the Indian mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta from the Bay of Bengal
FiSAT program was used to estimate population parameters of Rastrelliger kanagurta from length frequency data. Loc and K were found to be 27.4 em and 0.90 year1 respectively. The Wetherall plot provided an estimate of Loc and Z/K were 26.7 cm and 4.683 respectively. The annual rate of natural and fishing mortality were estimated as 1.71 and 3.21 respectively. The exploitation rate was 0.652. The selection pattern L50 was 18.09 cm. Recruitment pattern suggests two seasonal pulses one in March-May and another in September-October. Peak recruitment appeared in March-May. Maximum
yield could be achieved by decreasing length at first capture to 13.0 em. The relationship between total length and body weight was found to be W = 0.01583 L8952. Yield and stock prediction analysis suggested that highest yield and price could be achieved by decreasing the fishing mortality to 2.0 coefficient rate
Abundance, migration and management of Jatka (juvenile hilsa, Tenualosa ilisha) in the Gajner Beel, Pabna, Bangladesh
Studies on the abundance, migration and management of Jatka (juvenile hilsa, Tenualosa ilisha) were conducted in the Gajner Beel, located at the south-east corner of the Pabna Irrigation and Rural Development Project (PIRDP) in Sujanagar Upazila of Pabna district, Bangladesh. The main Jatka season was found to be extended from mid August to mid October. Veshal/Bandh/Khora Jal (lift net) and Ber Jal (beach seine net) were found as the major gears involved in Jatka fishing. The estimated total amount of Jatka caught from the Beel during the studied season was 46.2 t. The migratory route of Jatka is extended from the Padma and/or Jamuna rivers to the Badai river and then to the Beel through the sluice gate. The possibility of breeding of hilsa in the Beel was nullified. Finally, a community based management plan was suggested for implementation by the Gajner Beel management committee

Length-based estimates of vital statistics in threadfin bream (Nemipterus japonicus) from Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh
ELEFAN 0, ELEFAN I and ELEFAN II were used to estimate vital statistics of Nemipterus japonicus from length-frequency data sampled along the coast of Bangladesh. The parameters L and K were estimated at 24.5 cm and 0.94 year super(-1). The values of M and F were found to be 1.81 and 1.58 year super(-1), respectively.
