    The assesment of domestic cats body condition through direct and indirect methods

    The cats inability to adapt their enzymatic package to a domestic lifestyle and a restricted space of movement , for cats raised in appartments , made them more prone to overweight and obesity. Body scoring is a method of evaluation subjective and semiquantitative through inspection and palpation. Through the inspection and palpation of the fat that covers the chest , the presence or absence of the abdominal waist and the size of the belly fat are enough to establish the body score for cats. The biochemistry results showed significantlu changes of the parameters leptin, insulin, plasma total ghrelin, cholesterol and tryglicerides, which sustains their role in the adaptation of cats to a positive or negative energy balance. The purpose of this study is to change the owners perspective regarding the way they treat the physiologycal needs of their pets. They ignore their cats need for space, unlimited acces outside, their needs regarding the food, especially the increased requirements of proteins. The owners tend to mistakenly believe that a cat with an ideal score is underweight and that overweight cats are an ideal score

    Malignant Phyllodes Tumor of the Breast and Pregnancy: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review

    Phyllodes Tumor (PT) is a rare fibroepithelial breast tumor that can behave differently depending on its biologic features. Traditionally, PTs are classified by their histologic features into benign, borderline, and malignant. In most cases that were reported, all PTs may recur, but only the borderline and malignant PT can metastasize. PT usually occurs as a breast lump or accidental finding on ultrasound (US) examination. The clinical features include a well-defined breast mass, regular or lobulated. The diagnosis is based on the integration of morphology features, but remains challenging, particularly in the distinction from fibroadenomas. We report a case of a 36-year-old patient who presented for a voluminous breast mass, rapidly growing in the past 3–4 months. At presentation, the patient was 19 weeks pregnant. The breast tumor had the clinical and US aspect of PT. A core needle biopsy was obtained, confirming a benign PT, and local excision was performed with no postoperative complications. The final pathology report showed a borderline PT with close resection margins of 1 mm. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) established the diagnosis of malignant PT with heterologous sarcomatous differentiation. The case was discussed in the multidisciplinary tumor board (MDT) and mastectomy was recommended. The patient fully consented but refused surgery at 25 weeks’ gestation, fearing premature delivery. The right breast was closely monitored by US, and at 9 weeks after the first surgery, signs of local recurrence were detected. At 35 weeks’ gestation, right mastectomy was performed, with no perioperative complications. The pregnancy was closely followed up and no complication were found. The final pathology report describes multiples PT recurrences with heterologous sarcomatous differentiation. The pregnancy outcome was uneventful, and the patient delivered a healthy child vaginally at term with no peripartum complication. Postpartum, a computer tomography (CT) examination of the head, thorax, abdomen and pelvis was performed, with no evidence of metastases. Adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy completed the treatment. The follow-up and CT scan showed no metastases or further recurrence 4 years after diagnosis. In conclusion, diagnosis of PT can be difficult, especially because of the easy confusion with fibroadenoma of the breast. There are rare cases when a pathology exam needs further assessment and IHC is recommended for accurate diagnosis. Although malignant PT is rare and accounts for <1% of all breast cancers, the diagnosis and treatment that are recommended are based on the reported cases. Moreover, when complete surgical excision is achieved, the rates of recurrence and distant metastases are low, and adjuvant therapy might not be necessary

    Evaluation of Natural and Modified Castor Oil Incorporation on the Melt Processing and Physico-Chemical Properties of Polylactic Acid

    Bio-based plasticizers derived from renewable resources represent a sustainable replacement for petrochemical-based plasticizers. Vegetable oils are widely available, non-toxic and biodegradable, resistant to evaporation, mostly colorless and stable to light and heat, and are a suitable alternative for phthalate plasticizers. Plasticized poly(lactic acid) (PLA) materials containing 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt% and 20 wt% natural castor oil (R) were prepared by melt blending to improve the ductility of PLA. Three castor oil adducts with maleic anhydride (MA), methyl nadic anhydride (methyl-5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride) (NA) and hexahydro-4-methylphthalic anhydride (HA), previously synthesized, were incorporated in a concentration of 15 wt% each in PLA and compared with PLA plasticized with natural R. The physico-chemical properties of PLA/R blends were investigated by means of processability, chemical structure, surface wettability, mechanical, rheological and thermal characteristics. The addition of natural and modified R significantly improved the melt processing by decreasing the melt viscosity by ~95%, increased the surface hydrophobicity, enhanced the flexibility by ~14 times in the case of PLA/20R blend and ~11 times in the case of PLA/15R-MA blend as compared with neat PLA. The TG/DTG results showed that the natural R used up to 20 wt% could significantly improve the thermal stability of PLA, similar to the maleic anhydride-modified R. Based on the obtained results, up to 20 wt% natural R and 15 wt% MA-, HA- or NA-modified R might be used as environmentally friendly plasticizers that can improve the overall properties of PLA, depending on the intended food packaging applications
