An Account of Early Regulatory Efforts to Control Cherry Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Michigan
Excerpt: Fourty years ago, the amount of fruit produced by the cherry industry in Michigan exceeded that of all other states combined. State and federal regulatory agencies permitted no tolerance for maggots in cherries to be used as human food, and when such fruit was found to be infested, it was seized and ordered destroyed. Two species of fruit flies were known to infest cherries in Michigan, Rhagoletis congulata Loew (cherry fruit fly) and R. fausta Osten Sacken (black cherry fruit fly)

Ngrams and Engrams: the use of structural and conceptual features to discriminate between English translations of religious texts
In this paper, we present experiments using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) program, a âclosed-class keywordâ (CCK) analysis and a âcorrespondence analysisâ (CA) to examine whether the Scientology texts of L. Ron Hubbard are linguistically and conceptually like those of other religions. A KruskalâWallis test comparing the frequencies of LIWC category words in the Scientology texts and the English translations of the texts of five other religions showed that there were eighteen categories for which the Scientology texts differed from the others, and between one and seventeen for the other religions. In the CCK experiment, keywords typical of each religion were found, both by comparing the religious texts with one another and with the Brown corpus of general English. The most typical keywords were looked up in a concordancer and were manually coded with conceptual tags. The set of categories found for the Scientology texts showed little overlap with those found for the others. Our CA experiments produced fairly clear clusters of texts by religion. Scientology texts were seen at one pole on the first factor, with Christian and Islamic texts at the other. It appears that, in several ways, the Scientology texts are dissimilar to the texts of some of the world's major religions
Hard-core Yukawa model for two-dimensional charge stabilized colloids
The hyper-netted chain (HNC) and Percus-Yevick (PY) approximations are used
to study the phase diagram of a simple hard-core Yukawa model of
charge-stabilized colloidal particles in a two-dimensional system. We calculate
the static structure factor and the pair distribution function over a wide
range of parameters. Using the statics correlation functions we present an
estimate for the liquid-solid phase diagram for the wide range of the

Human milk macronutrients and bioactive molecules and development of regional fat depots in Western Australian infants during the first 12 months of lactation
We investigated associations between intakes of human milk (HM) components (macronutrients and biologically active molecules) and regional fat depots development in healthy term infants (n = 20) across the first year of lactation. Infant limb (mid-arm and mid-thigh) lean and fat areas were assessed by ultrasound imaging at 2, 5, 9 and 12 months of age. Concentrations of HM total protein, whey protein, casein, adiponectin, leptin, lysozyme, lactoferrin, secretory IGA, total carbohydrates, lactose, HM oligosaccharides (total HMO, calculated) and infant 24-h milk intake were measured, and infant calculated daily intakes (CDI) of HM components were determined. This pilot study shows higher 24-h milk intake was associated with a larger mid-arm fat area (p = 0.024), higher breastfeeding frequency was associated with larger mid-arm (p = 0.008) and mid-thigh (p < 0.001) fat areas. Lysozyme (p = 0.001) and HMO CDI (p = 0.004) were time-dependently associated with the mid-arm fat area. Intakes of HM components and breastfeeding parameters may modulate infant limb fat depots development during the first year of age and potentially promote favorable developmental programming of infant body composition; however, further studies are needed to confirm these findings

North American Influence on Tropospheric Ozone and the Effects of Recent Emission Reductions: Constraints from ICARTT Observations
We use observations from the International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT) campaign over eastern North America in summer 2004, interpreted with a global 3âD model of tropospheric chemistry (GEOSâChem), to improve and update estimates of North American influence on global tropospheric ozone and the effect of recent U.S. anthropogenic reductions on surface ozone pollution. We find that the 50% decrease in U.S. stationary NOx sources since 1999 has decreased mean U.S. boundary layer ozone concentrations by 6â8 ppbv in the southeast and 4â6 ppbv in the Midwest. The observed dO3/dCO molar enhancement ratio in the U.S. boundary layer during ICARTT was 0.46 mol molâ1, larger than the range of 0.3â0.4 from studies in the early 1990s, possibly reflecting the decrease in the NOx/CO emission ratio as well as an increase in the ozone production efficiency per unit NOx. North American NOx emissions during summer 2004 as constrained by the ICARTT observations (0.72 Tg N fossil fuel, 0.11 Tg N biomass burning, 0.28 Tg N lightning for 1 July to 15 August) enhanced the hemispheric tropospheric ozone burden by 12.4%, with comparable contributions from fossil fuel and lightning (5â6%), but only 1% from biomass burning emissions despite 2004 being a record fire year over Alaska and western Canada.Earth and Planetary Science

Biogenic Versus Anthropogenic Sources of CO in the United States
Aircraft observations of carbon monoxide (CO) from the ICARTT campaign over the eastern United States in summer 2004 (July 1âAugust 15), interpreted with a global 3-D model of tropospheric chemistry (GEOS-Chem), show that the national anthropogenic emission inventory from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (93 Tg CO yâ1) is too high by 60% in summer. Our best estimate of the CO anthropogenic source for the ICARTT period is 6.4 Tg CO, including 4.6 Tg from direct emission and 1.8 Tg CO from oxidation of anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The biogenic CO source for the same period from the oxidation of isoprene and other biogenic VOCs is 8.3 Tg CO, and is independently constrained by ICARTT observations of formaldehyde (HCHO). Anthropogenic emissions of CO in the U.S. have decreased to the point that they are now lower than the biogenic source in summer.Earth and Planetary SciencesEngineering and Applied Science
Frozen spatial chaos induced by boundaries
We show that rather simple but non-trivial boundary conditions could induce
the appearance of spatial chaos (that is stationary, stable, but spatially
disordered configurations) in extended dynamical systems with very simple
dynamics. We exemplify the phenomenon with a nonlinear reaction-diffusion
equation in a two-dimensional undulated domain. Concepts from the theory of
dynamical systems, and a transverse-single-mode approximation are used to
