Corn Yields from Fertilizer Recommendations Made by Some Soil Testing Laboratories Serving Kentucky

    Get PDF
One of the most economically important services available to Kentucky farmers is that of soil testing and fertilizer recommendations. Fertilizer purchases on the order of 150 million dollars per year are currently made by farmers in Kentucky. Until about 30 years ago there was no routine, rapid method for analyzing soils to determine fertilizer needs. Since then, as better methods were developed, soil testing laboratories have been set up for routine farmer use. For many years only the soil testing service provided through the University of Kentucky (UK) was readily available to farmers in Kentucky. Even though the University still provides statewide service. Many commercial laboratories have been developed which now also serve the state

Is Row Fertilizer Necessary for No-Till?

Row fertilizer is an old practice which has been in and out of favor over the years. The use of row fertilizer and its benefits vary with the conditions. The efficiency of applied fertilizer is greatly increased by putting it beside the row and is very helpful on soils with a low soil test. For soils testing medium or high, a sufficient amount of nutrients exist in the soil so that additional fertilizer applied in the row will not increase yields. Regardless of soil test. row fertilizer will usually increase the vigor and early growth of a crop. Most of the time this does not result in higher yields unless there are conditions that reduce nutrient uptake. These conditions could include something that results in plant stress and reduced root growth, such as cool temperatures, wetness, or compaction. Row fertilizer has proven to be beneficial in the cooler areas of the northern corn belt and the easily compactable soils in the coastal plains of the South

    Model-Based Reflection for Agent Evolution

Adaptability is a key characteristic of intelligence. My research explores techniques for enabling software agents to adapt themselves as their functional requirements change incrementally. In the domain of manufacturing, for example, a software agent designed to assemble physical artifacts may be given a new goal of disassembling artifacts. As another example, in the internet domain, a software agent designed to browse some types of documents may be called upon to browse a document of another type. In particular, my research examines the use of reflection (an agent's knowledge and reasoning about itself) to accomplish evolution (incremental adaptation of an agent's capabilities). I have developed a language called TMKL (Task-Method-Knowledge Language) that enables modeling of an agent's composition and functioning. A TMKL model of an agent explicitly represents the tasks the agent addresses, the methods it applies, and the knowledge it uses. TMKL models are hierarchical, i.e., they represents tasks, methods and knowledge at multiple levels of abstraction. I have also developed a reasoning shell called REM (Reflective Evolutionary Mind) which provides support for the execution and evolution of agents represented in TMKL. REM employs a variety of strategies for evolving TMKL agents. Some of these strategies are purely model-based: knowledge of composition and functioning encoded in TMKL directly enables adaptation. REM also employs two traditional artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques: generative planning and reinforcement learning. The combination of model-based adaptation, generative planning, and reinforcement learning constitutes a mechanism for re ective agent evolution which is capable of addressing a variety of problems to which none of these individual approaches alone is suited. My research demonstrates the computational feasibility of this mechanism using experiments involving a variety of intelligent software agents in a variety of domains

    Maximum Net Returns from Fertilizers

Considerable interest in trends taking place in the consumption of commercial fertilizers in Kentucky has been evident during the last two or three years. Due both to the stressed agricultural economy and to government programs, total tonnage has dropped significantly. This has made a direct impact on the fertilizer industry serving Kentucky. Concern has been expressed that UK is telling farmers that they\u27re using too much fertilizer , suggesting that this is the cause of the reduced volume experienced by many dealers. We hope to address this concern in such a way that UK\u27s position regarding use of commercial fertilizers for crop production can be better understood
