    Fulminant Type 1 Diabetes as a Model of Nature to Explore the Role of C-Peptide

    Patients with fulminant type 1 diabetes almost completely lack C-peptide even soon after the onset of the disease, and the deficiency continues for the rest of their life. Thus, fulminant type 1 diabetes could serve as a good model of nature to explore the physiological role of C-peptide. For example, patients with fulminant type 1 diabetes have diabetic chronic complications more frequently than those with classical autoimmune type 1 diabetes 5 years after the onset of diabetes, and the higher prevalence could be partly attributable to the complete lack of C-peptide in fulminant type 1 diabetes

    Women's movement and the state in contemporary Japan

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Political Science, 2003.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 198-208).Progress on women's equality in Japan is found to be constrained by state intervention in the women's movement. This intervention takes the form of regulations that limit the independence of women's group, as well as resources that aid and influence their activities. The result is a relationship between women and the state that is more cooperative than conflictual. For this reason, social change is necessarily slow, as it is achieved through constant consultation and compromise. These findings were reached through an examination of women's organizations, women's centers, and women's policy in Japan. Data collected on 889 women's organizations shows a vibrant and diverse women's movement. But Japanese government policies make it difficult for grassroots civic groups to gain legal recognition and develop beyond part-time voluntary associations into full-time professional organizations. At the same time, the Japanese government actively intervenes to aid women's organizations by providing various resources, such as direct funding, government offices for women's policy, and public women's centers. Data collected on 623 women's centers and analysis of various women's programs show how the provision of these resources allow the government to influence the women's movement. In this way, cooperation between the state and women's movement is institutionalized, minimizing social conflict and slowing social change.by Miriam Y. Murase.Ph.D

    Postmortem examination was performed on a female western gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) stranded at Tomakomai-shi, Hokkaido, Japan in August, 2007, and amphipod whale lice (Cyamus scammoni) and cirripedian epizoites (Cryptolepas rachianecti) were obtained. The histopathological investigation of the epizoites was given. 2007年8月、北海道苫小牧市の海岸でストランド(座礁)したコククジラ(Eschrichtius robustus) 雌1個体の外部寄生虫クジラジラミ類(Cyamus scammoni)と着生生物フジツボ類(Cryptolepas rachianecti)について、日本では千葉に続き二例目の記録をした。また、C. rachianectiの着生部位における組織病理学的検索も実施した

    Noninvasive monitoring of deterioration in skeletal muscle function with forearm cast immobilization and the prevention of deterioration

    BACKGROUND: In this research inactivity was simulated by immobilizing the forearm region in a plaster cast. Changes in skeletal muscle oxidative function were measured using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and the preventative effect of the training protocol on deterioration of skeletal muscle and the clinical utility of NIRS were examined. METHODS: Fourteen healthy adult men underwent immobilization of the forearm of the non-dominant arm by plaster cast for 21 days. Eight healthy adult subjects were designated as the immobilization group (IMM) and six were designated as the immobilization + training group (IMM+TRN). Grip strength, forearm circumference and dynamic handgrip exercise endurance were measured before and after the 21-day immobilization period. Using NIRS, changes in oxidative function of skeletal muscles were also evaluated. Muscle oxygen consumption recovery was recorded after the completion of 60 seconds of 40% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) dynamic handgrip exercise 1 repetition per 4 seconds and the recovery time constant (TcVO(2)mus) was calculated. RESULTS: TcVO(2)mus for the IMM was 59.7 ± 5.5 seconds (average ± standard error) before immobilization and lengthened significantly to 70.4 ± 5.4 seconds after immobilization (p < 0.05). For the IMM+TRN, TcVO(2)mus was 78.3 ± 6.2 seconds before immobilization and training and shortened significantly to 63.1 ± 5.6 seconds after immobilization and training (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The training program used in this experiment was effective in preventing declines in muscle oxidative function and endurance due to immobilization. The experimental results suggest that non-invasive monitoring of skeletal muscle function by NIRS would be possible in a clinical setting
