Reformulation of the Stochastic Potential Switching Algorithm and a Generalized Fourtuin-Kasteleyn Representation

A new formulation of the stochastic potential switching algorithm is presented. This reformulation naturally leads us to a generalized Fourtuin-Kasteleyn representation of the partition function Z. A formula for internal energy E and that of heat capacity C are derived from derivatives of the partition function. We also derive a formula for the exchange probability in the replica exchange Monte Carlo method. By combining the formulae with the Stochastic Cutoff method, we can greatly reduce the computational time to perform internal energy and heat capacity measurements and the replica exchange Monte Carlo method in long-range interacting systems. Numerical simulations in three dimensional magnetic dipolar systems show the validity and efficiency of the method.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, to appear in PR

Extrahepatic portal vein aneurysm is a rare disorder. From 1956 to 2008, we found only 43 published English-language reports, including 67 cases, using Pub Med. We report a case of a 77-year-old woman who had complaints of lower abdominal fullness and residual urine. We performed ultrasonography (US), which demonstrated a congenital extrahepatic portal vein aneurysm. She had no obvious symptoms of the extrahepatic portal vein aneurysm. She had undergone gastrectomy without blood transfusion for gastric ulcer more than 20 years ago. Physical examination revealed no abnormal findings. US revealed a 2.2 × 1.8 cm, round shaped hypoechogenic lesion at the hepatic hilum. Color Doppler US showed bidirectional colors due to circular flow within this lesion. 3D-CT and CT angiography demonstrated that the saccular aneurysm at the hepatic hilum was 3.0 cm in diameter and was enhanced equal to that of portal vein.Twenty-six months after the diagnosis, the aneurysm had not grown in size. Since our patient had no serious complaints or liver disease, surgical procedures had not been employed. US and 3D-CT are noninvasive diagnostic techniques and are helpful in the diagnosis and follow-up of extrahepatic portal vein aneurysms

Discreteness and entropic fluctuations in GREM-like systems

7 pages, 3 figure, 2 figures are added, the volume changes from 4 pages to 7 pagesWithin generalized random energy models, we study the effects of energy discreteness and of entropy extensivity in the low temperature phase. At zero temperature, discreteness of the energy induces replica symmetry breaking, in contrast to the continuous case where the ground state is unique. However, when the ground state energy has an extensive entropy, the distribution of overlaps P(q) instead tends towards a single delta function in the large volume limit. Considering now the whole frozen phase, we find that P(q) varies continuously with temperature, and that state-to-state fluctuations of entropy wash out the differences between the discrete and continuous energy models
