LoCuSS: The Near-Infrared Luminosity and Weak-Lensing Mass Scaling Relation of Galaxy Clusters
We present the first scaling relation between weak-lensing galaxy cluster
mass, , and near-infrared luminosity, . Our results are based on
17 clusters observed with wide-field instruments on Subaru, the United Kingdom
Infrared Telescope, the Mayall Telescope, and the MMT. We concentrate on the
relation between projected 2D weak-lensing mass and spectroscopically confirmed
luminosity within 1Mpc, modelled as , obtaining a power
law slope of and an intrinsic scatter of
. Intrinsic scatter of ~10% is a
consistent feature of our results regardless of how we modify our approach to
measuring the relationship between mass and light. For example, deprojecting
the mass and measuring both quantities within , that is itself
obtained from the lensing analysis, yields
and . We also
find that selecting members based on their (J-K) colours instead of
spectroscopic redshifts neither increases the scatter nor modifies the slope.
Overall our results indicate that near-infrared luminosity measured on scales
comparable with (typically 1Mpc for our sample) is a low scatter and
relatively inexpensive proxy for weak-lensing mass. Near-infrared luminosity
may therefore be a useful mass proxy for cluster cosmology experiments.Comment: 9 Pages, 5 Figures, 3 Tables. Submitted to MNRA
The XXL Survey X: K-band luminosity - weak-lensing mass relation for groups and clusters of galaxies
We present the K-band luminosity-halo mass relation, ,
for a subsample of 20 of the 100 brightest clusters in the XXL Survey observed
with WIRCam at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). For the first time,
we have measured this relation via weak-lensing analysis down to . This allows us to investigate whether the slope
of the relation is different for groups and clusters, as seen in other
works. The clusters in our sample span a wide range in mass, , at . The K-band luminosity
scales as with and an
intrinsic scatter of . Combining our
sample with some clusters in the Local Cluster Substructure Survey (LoCuSS)
present in the literature, we obtain a slope of and an
intrinsic scatter of . The flattening in the seen
in previous works is not seen here and might be a result of a bias in the mass
measurement due to assumptions on the dynamical state of the systems. We also
study the richness-mass relation and find that group-sized halos have more
galaxies per unit halo mass than massive clusters. However, the brightest
cluster galaxy (BCG) in low-mass systems contributes a greater fraction to the
total cluster light than BCGs do in massive clusters; the luminosity gap
between the two brightest galaxies is more prominent for group-sized halos.
This result is a natural outcome of the hierarchical growth of structures,
where massive galaxies form and gain mass within low-mass groups and are
ultimately accreted into more massive clusters to become either part of the BCG

Educating novice practitioners to detect elder financial abuse: A randomised controlled trial

An evidence-based educational intervention was developed to advance practitioners’ decision-making in this domain. The objective was to test the effectiveness of a decision-training educational intervention on novices’ ability to detect elder financial abuse. The research was funded by an E.S.R.C. grant reference RES-189-25-0334.
Methods - A parallel-group, randomised controlled trial was conducted using a judgement analysis approach. Each participant used the World Wide Web to judge case sets at pre-test and post-test. The intervention group was provided with training after pre-test testing, whereas the control group were purely given instructions to continue with the task. 154 pre-registration health and social care practitioners were randomly allocated to intervention (n78) or control (n76). The intervention comprised of written and graphical descriptions of an expert consensus standard explaining how case information should be used to identify elder financial abuse. Participants’ ratings of certainty of abuse occurring (detection) were correlated with the experts’ ratings of the same cases at both stages of testing.
Results - At pre-test, no differences were found between control and intervention on rating capacity. Comparison of mean scores for the control and intervention group at pre-test compared to immediate post-test, showed a statistically significant result. The intervention was shown to have had a positive moderate effect; at immediate post-test, the intervention group’s ratings had become more similar to those of the experts, whereas the control’s capacity did not improve. The results of this study indicate that the decision-training intervention had a positive effect on detection ability.
Conclusions - This freely available, web-based decision-training aid is an effective evidence-based educational resource. Health and social care professionals can use the resource to enhance their ability to detect elder financial abuse. It has been embedded in a web resource at http://www.elderfinancialabuse.co.uk.ESR
Longitudinal Synaptic Loss in Primary Tauopathies: An In Vivo [11 C]UCB-J Positron Emission Tomography Study
BACKGROUND: Synaptic loss is characteristic of many neurodegenerative diseases; it occurs early and is strongly related to functional deficits. OBJECTIVE: In this longitudinal observational study, we determine the rate at which synaptic density is reduced in the primary tauopathies of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD), and we test the relationship with disease progression. METHODS: Our cross-sectional cohort included 32 participants with probable PSP and 16 with probable CBD (all amyloid-negative corticobasal syndrome), recruited from tertiary care centers in the United Kingdom, and 33 sex- and age-matched healthy control subjects. Synaptic density was estimated by positron emission tomography imaging with the radioligand [11 C]UCB-J that binds synaptic vesicle 2A. Clinical severity and cognition were assessed by the PSP Rating Scale and the Addenbrooke's cognitive examination. Regional [11 C]UCB-J nondisplaceable binding potential was estimated in Hammersmith Atlas regions of interest. Twenty-two participants with PSP/CBD had a follow-up [11 C]UCB-J positron emission tomography scan after 1 year. We calculated the annualized change in [11 C]UCB-J nondisplaceable binding potential and correlated this with the change in clinical severity. RESULTS: We found significant annual synaptic loss within the frontal lobe (-3.5%, P = 0.03) and the right caudate (-3.9%, P = 0.046). The degree of longitudinal synaptic loss within the frontal lobe correlated with the rate of change in the PSP Rating Scale (R = 0.47, P = 0.03) and cognition (Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised, R = -0.62, P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: We provide in vivo evidence for rapid progressive synaptic loss, correlating with clinical progression in primary tauopathies. Synaptic loss may be an important therapeutic target and outcome variable for early-phase clinical trials of disease-modifying treatments. © 2023 The Authors. LoCuSS: Testing hydrostatic equilibrium in galaxy clusters
We test the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium in an X-ray luminosity selected sample of 50 galaxy clusters at from the Local Cluster Substructure Survey (LoCuSS). Our weak-lensing measurements of control systematic biases to sub-4 per cent, and our hydrostatic measurements of the same achieve excellent agreement between XMM-Newton and Chandra. The mean ratio of X-ray to lensing mass for these 50 clusters is , and for the 44 clusters also detected by Planck, the mean ratio of Planck mass estimate to LoCuSS lensing mass is . Based on a careful like-for-like analysis, we find that LoCuSS, the Canadian Cluster Comparison Project (CCCP), and Weighing the Giants (WtG) agree on at . This small level of hydrostatic bias disagrees at with the level required to reconcile Planck cosmology results from the cosmic microwave background and galaxy cluster counts

Predicting temporary threshold shifts in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) : the effects of noise level and duration

To examine the auditory effects of noise on odontocetes, a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was exposed to octave-band noise (4–8 kHz) of varying durations (<2–30 min) and sound pressures (130–178 dB re 1 µPa). Temporary threshold shift (TTS) occurrence was quantified in an effort to (i) determine the sound exposure levels (SELs) (dB re 1 µPa2 s) that induce TTS and (ii) develop a model to predict TTS onset. Hearing thresholds were measured using auditory evoked potentials. If SEL was kept constant, significant shifts were induced by longer duration exposures but not for shorter exposures. Higher SELs were required to induce shifts in shorter duration exposures. The results did not support an equal-energy model to predict TTS onset. Rather, a logarithmic algorithm, which increased in sound energy as exposure duration decreased, was a better predictor of TTS. Recovery to baseline hearing thresholds was also logarithmic (approximately −1.8 dB/doubling of time) but indicated variability including faster recovery rates after greater shifts and longer recoveries necessary after longer duration exposures. The data reflected the complexity of TTS in mammals that should be taken into account when predicting odontocete TTS.This work was funded by the
