Molecular Studies to Evaluate Variegation of Philodendron var. Birkin - Are Genetic Mutations Responsible for Variegation in Philodendron Birkin?
Plant tissue culture and molecular genetic techniques were used to analyze the instability of the genome in philodendron var. \u27Birkin\u27. This plant has variegated, white, green, and greenish-red leaves (that have lost their variegation) on the same plant. Did genetic mutations occur in meristematic sectors of variegated leaves that have reverted to green coloration, or is it an epigenetic change? PCR and sets of RAPD plastid primers were used to determine if the presence or absence of a PCR product correlated with differences in leaf color and variegation (white, green-white, variegated, reddish green or green leaves). A DNA isolation procedure was optimized to extract PCR-quality plastid DNA from Philodendron leaves. A modified DNA extraction procedure (BABEC) was used to isolate plastid DNA. It resulted in a high yield of DNA as measured by the Nanodrop system. PCR was performed with eight different RAPD plastid primers (GB07, GB8, OPA19, OPA22, OPB22, OPC08, OPC12, RAPD primer #1, RAPD primer #2). Differences in PCR products were observed for five primers, while two primers resulted in no difference in PCR products. This indicated that genetic mutations resulted in differences in leaf color and variegation. We are not excluding the possibility that epigenetic changes also play a role in variegation, however, this has not yet been analyzed. These results could prove useful for breeding ornamental traits and introducing improvements into the genus Philodendron
Influence of Addition of Polyols and Food Emulsifiers on the Retrogradation Rate of Starch
The influence of polyols and emulsifiers on hardening of non-glutinous rice starch gels has been investigated. The polyols and emulsifiers were added at concentrations of 6% (w/w) and 0.2% (w/w), respectively , to starch gels (starch content, 30%). The hardening rate and the initial viscoelastic values of gels were computed by analyzing static linear viscoelastic parameters (creep compliance) of the gels stored at 0 C for up to 3,000 minutes.
Hardening of gels, i.e., retrogradation of starch, could be described by a first order kinetic equation. Polyols prevented the retrogradation of starch, and formed rigid and stable gel matrices. Emulsifiers also retarded starch retrogradation and stabilized the gel network.
The use of the two food additives was successful in retarding the retrogradation of starch. It follows that these effects might be attributed to the water-structure formation effect of polyols and the complex-formation of starch chains with emulsifier molecules
O novo modelo de avaliação para o mestrado profissional em administração proposto pela capes em comparação ao modelo de acreditação internacional / The new evaluation model for the professional master of administration proposed by capes in comparison of the international accreditation model
Percepcão sobre o produto tecnico pelos docentes de mestrado profissional em administração / Perception of the technical product by professional master's degree teachers in administration
ASCA solid state imaging spectrometer observations of O stars
We report ASCA Solid State Imaging Spectrometer (SIS) x-ray observations of the O stars delta Ori and lambda Ori. The energy resolution of the SIS allows us to resolve features in the O star x-ray spectra which are not apparent in spectra obtained by x-ray spectrometers with lower energy resolution. SIS spectra from both stars show evidence of line emission, suggesting the thermal nature of the x-ray source. However, the observed line strengths are different for the two stars. The observed stellar x-ray spectra are not well described by isothermal models although absorbed thermal emission models with two or more temperatures can provide an adequate fit to the data. For both stars we present evidence of absorbing columns significantly larger than the known ISM columns, indicative of absorption by a circumstellar medium, presumably the stellar winds. In addition, the lambda Ori spectrum shows the presence of emission at energies greater than 3 keV which is not seen in the delta Ori spectrum
Nitro drugs for the treatment of trypanosomatid diseases:past, present, and future prospects
There is an urgent need for new, safer, and effective treatments for the diseases caused by the protozoan parasites Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Leishmania spp. In the search for more effective drugs to treat these ‘neglected diseases’ researchers have chosen to reassess the therapeutic value of nitroaromatic compounds. Previously avoided in drug discovery programs owing to potential toxicity issues, a nitro drug is now being used successfully as part of a combination therapy for human African trypanosomiasis. We describe here the rehabilitation of nitro drugs for the treatment of trypanosomatid diseases and discuss the future prospects for this compound class
Experimental determination of B-T phase diagram of YBa_2Cu_3O_7-d to 150T for B perpendicular to c
The B-T phase diagram for thin film YBa_2Cu_3O_7-d with B parallel to the
superconducting layers has been constructed from GHz transport measurements to
150T. Evidence for a transition from a high T regime dominated by orbital
effects, to a low T regime where paramagnetic limiting drives the quenching of
superconductivity, is seen. Up to 110T the upper critical field is found to be
linear in T and in remarkable agreement with extrapolation of the longstanding
result of Welp et al arising from magnetisation measurements to 6T. Beyond this
a departure from linear behaviour occurs at T=74K, where a 3D-2D crossover is
expected to occur.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Reimagining and Rewriting the Guantánamo Bay Detainee Library: Translation, Ideology, and Power
The main argument of this thesis is that the rewriters of the story of the Guantánamo Bay Detainee Library, namely journalists and filmmakers, engage differently with primary source material about the detention facility; what they omit and include in their narratives varies and depends largely on their pre-established ideologies. In the field of translation studies, this thesis contributes a new case study; it considers the problematic interplay between law, libraries, and multilingual information access in detention facilities. My research also demonstrates the challenges of examining a library that belongs to a highly controversial military system. In the first chapter I review previous studies of detainee libraries, and I introduce the concepts of rewriting, power, patronage, and ideology. In the second chapter I evaluate how reading material is unevenly distributed across nineteen language groups in the Guantánamo Bay Detainee Library. In the third chapter I reflect on the ways in which news articles written by civilian and military journalists about the Guantánamo Bay Detainee Library are rooted in disparate ideologies. In the fourth chapter I parse the story of the Guantánamo Bay Detainee Library as it is told through the fictitious lens of the film Camp X-Ray (2014). In the fifth and final chapter I summarize the logistical challenges of studying the Guantánamo Bay Detainee Library from afar and imagine what future might await its books
