Bottom melting of Arctic Sea Ice in the Nansen Basin due to Atlantic Water influence
The hydrographic situation for a region north of Svalbard is investigated using observations from the Norwegian Young Sea Ice Cruise (N-ICE2015). Observations from January to June 2015 are compared to historical observations with a particular focus on the warm and salty Atlantic Water (AW) entering the Arctic Ocean through the Fram Strait. Here we discuss how the AW has changed over time, what governs its characteristics, and how it might influence the sea ice cover. We find that AW characteristics north of Svalbard are mainly controlled by the distance along the inflow path, and by changes in inflowing AW temperature in the Fram Strait. AW characteristics north of Svalbard are also largely affected by local processes such as sea ice growth, melting and tidal induced mixing. Furthermore, one dimensional model results and observations show that AW has a direct impact on the sea ice cover north of Svalbard. Shallow and warm AW efficiently reduces sea ice growth and results in bottom melting throughout the whole year. The historical observations and outcome from a fully coupled earth system model show a warming trend of AW core temperature over the last few decades. We believe that the AW warming trend in the Arctic Ocean may be part of long term multi-decadal variability, which is influenced by anthropogenic forcing. Simulations suggest that approximately 30 % of the recent warming may be attributed to global warming.Master i Meteorologi og oseanografiMAMN-GEOFGEOF39
Impact of Production Location, Production System, and Variety on the Volatile Organic Compounds Fingerprints and Sensory Characteristics of Tomatoes
Consumers havemore andmore interest inwhere and howtheir foods are produced. However, it is often challenging to discriminate products from different production locations and systems. The objective of this study was to examine fingerprinting of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as an approach for characterization and discrimination of tomatoes by their production location, production system, and variety using Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry combined with multivariate statistics. Sensory analysis was complementing the VOC analyses. The study was part of the EU CORE Organic II project AuthenticFood. Tomato sample batches cultivated in two locations in Italy, according to the organic and conventional production system, comprising two varieties, and produced in two consecutive years were examined. Both factors production location and production systemimpacted considerably the VOC fingerprints, but compared to these two factors, minor differences were observed between the two varieties of tomatoes studied. VOC data were successfully used to predict the origin and production systemfor this sample set. Sensory data also primarily indicated the differences between origin and production systems, and several sensory attributes could be predicted from the VOC fingerprints. Therefore, VOC fingerprints reflect production conditions and are promising for substantiation and authentication of special tomato traits
Plasma cholesteryl ester fatty acids do not mediate the association of ethnicity with type 2 diabetes: results from the HELIUS study
Scope:
Ethnic minority groups have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) than the host population. Our aim was to identify whether plasma cholesteryl ester fatty acids (CEFA) mediate the ethnic differences in type 2 diabetes.
Methods and results:
We included 202 Dutch, 206 South-Asian Surinamese, 205 African Surinamese, 215 Turkish and 213 Moroccan origin participants of the HELIUS study (Amsterdam, the Netherlands). Logistic regression was used to determine the associations between plasma CEFA and T2D. Mediation analysis was used to identify whether CEFA contributed to the association between ethnicity and T2D. We adjusted for ethnicity, age, sex, smoking, physical activity and BMI. Associations between plasma CEFA and T2D were similar across all ethnic groups. Although differences in plasma CEFA across ethnic groups were observed, CEFA did not mediate the differences in T2D prevalence between ethnic groups.
Conclusion:
Although ethnic differences in plasma CEFA were found and CEFA were associated with T2D, CEFA did not contribute to the difference in T2D prevalence between ethnic groups. If confirmed, this implies that maintenance of the more beneficial CEFA profiles in the non-Dutch ethnic groups may be encouraged to prevent an even higher prevalence of T2D in these groups
First record and a new synonymy of Poecilus beesoni (Coleoptera: Carabidae) from Iran
Poecilus beesoni (Andrewes) collected at lake Izeh (Khuzestan) is recorded for the first time for Iran. For identification the holotypes of Poecilus beesoni and P. affinissimus were compared. Based on this study Poecilus affinissimus (Ali 1967) is synonymized with Poecilus beesoni (Andrewes, 1927)
