Impact of Credit Constraints on Firms Growth: A Case Study of Manufacturing Sector of Pakistan

    Get PDF
This study explores the impact of credit constraint on growth by using firm level data of manufacturing sector of Pakistan for the period of 1974-2010 analyzing via Generalized Method of Moments (1991) one step and two step estimation technique. Result of full sample shows that the firms in manufacturing sector for the period from 1974-2010 are not facing external financial constraints and the effect of sale to capital ratio indicates the availability of investment opportunities for the firms in the manufacturing sector of Pakistan. The results for pre and post financial sector reform era shows that firms are facing tight external financial constraints in pre financial reform era as compared to post financial reform era. Results show that growth of firms having small assets is constrained by internal finance whereas firms having medium and large assets are not constrained by internal finance. Similarly, firms’ growth that is less dependent on debt finance is constrained by internal finance whereas results for the firms that are moderately and highly aggressive in financing with debt indicate that the growth of firms belonging to these groups is not constrained by internal finance. Similarly, low dividend paying firms growth is constrained by internal finance whereas high dividend paying firms’ growth is not constrained by internal finance

Thiamethoxam toxicity: a review in one-health perspective

    Get PDF
Extensive and frequent use of pesticides has induced numerous abnormalities in target and non-target exposed organisms. Among different various pesticides, neonicotinoids are extensively employed in agro-production sectors. Thiamethoxam (TMX) plays an essential role in keeping the crop safe from insect attack, but on the other hand, it has been reported to induce adverse effects in both humans and animals. Previously, it was thought that neonicotinoids have low toxicity potential in mammals, but widespread use has made it evident that these pesticides have serious toxic effects on both invertebrates and vertebrates. Extensive applications of pesticides also pose serious eco-toxicological threats to aquatic and terrestrial organisms in the ecosystem. This review describes the chemistry, pharmacodynamics, and toxic effects of various TMX on living organisms. Moreover, this review summarizes the excretion/deposition of TMX in different tissues along with potentially adverse effects on production potential, immunity, blood parameters, and male/female reproductive systems. Though the pros of TMX surpass the cons, its reported intrinsic toxicity stresses the need to develop new pesticides that have high potency with little harm to humans and animals. Hence, there is a need for hours to address knowledge gaps related to TMX and design effective rational usage of TMX strategies to keep the ecosystem safe from the potentially harmful effects of TMX

Glacial lakes mapping using multi satellite PlanetScope imagery and deep learning

    Get PDF
Glacial lakes mapping using satellite remote sensing data are important for studying the effects of climate change as well as for the mitigation and risk assessment of a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). The 3U cubesat constellation of Planet Labs offers the capability of imaging the whole Earth landmass everyday at 3-4 m spatial resolution. The higher spatial, as well as temporal resolution of PlanetScope imagery in comparison with Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2, makes it a valuable data source for monitoring the glacial lakes. Therefore, this paper explores the potential of the PlanetScope imagery for glacial lakes mapping with a focus on the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Himalaya (HKKH) region. Though the revisit time of the PlanetScope imagery is short, courtesy of 130+ small satellites, this imagery contains only four bands and the imaging sensors in these small satellites exhibit varying spectral responses as well as lower dynamic range. Furthermore, the presence of cast shadows in the mountainous regions and varying spectral signature of the water pixels due to differences in composition, turbidity and depth makes it challenging to automatically and reliably extract surface water in PlanetScope imagery. Keeping in view these challenges, this work uses state of the art deep learning models for pixel-wise classification of PlanetScope imagery into the water and background pixels and compares the results with Random Forest and Support Vector Machine classifiers. The deep learning model is based on the popular U-Net architecture. We evaluate U-Net architecture similar to the original U-Net as well as a U-Net with a pre-trained EfficientNet backbone. In order to train the deep neural network, ground truth data are generated by manual digitization of the surface water in PlanetScope imagery with the aid of Very High Resolution Satellite (VHRS) imagery. The created dataset consists of more than 5000 water bodies having an area of approx. 71km2 in eight different sites in the HKKH region. The evaluation of the test data show that the U-Net with EfficientNet backbone achieved the highest F1 Score of 0.936. A visual comparison with the existing glacial lake inventories is then performed over the Baltoro glacier in the Karakoram range. The results show that the deep learning model detected significantly more lakes than the existing inventories, which have been derived from Landsat OLI imagery. The trained model is further evaluated on the time series PlanetScope imagery of two glacial lakes, which have resulted in an outburst flood. The output of the U-Net is also compared with the GLakeMap data. The results show that the higher spatial and temporal resolution of PlanetScope imagery is a significant advantage in the context of glacial lakes mapping and monitoring.International Foundation for Science ; COMSTECH gran

Are Basel Capital Standards Implemented Successfully in Pakistan?

    No full text
This paper basically examines implementation of Basel Accords in Pakistan and investigates to what extent; these accords have positive or negative impact on economy. Two types of capital, Tier 1 and Tier 2 are examined under Basel II for the first time for a developing country. Both have impact on capital management but their mechanisms are different. For this purpose, two models, capital buffer model and provisioning models are used for the estimation through GMM one step and two steps for the period of 2001-2012 for 47 Pakistani commercial banks. Results show that Basel II Capital accord is pro-cyclical. Sample is divided into two regimes. Tier 1 capital is positively related and Tier 2 is negatively related to loan loss provisions in the pre Basel regime while the results are reversed in the post Basel regime. Business cycle fluctuations are positively related to loan loss provisions in the pre Basel regime and negatively related in the post Basel regime providing the evidence that new capital regulation is pro-cyclical

Sensitivity of Firms’ Investment and Cash Flow: A Case Study of Manufacturing Sector of Pakistan

    No full text
This study investigates that either the firms in manufacturing sector of Pakistan are facing external financial constraints or not along with that this study also explores investment cash flow sensitivity in different regimes. We used a panel data of 500 manufacturing sector firms over the period of 1974 to 2010 and the sample is divided into different time periods on the basis of different political regimes, pre and post financial sector reform era in the history of Pakistan. Generalized Method of Moments, one step and two step estimation techniques have been applied for analysis. Results obtained for the full sample indicates that overall firms are not facing external financial constraint. The analysis of financial constrains in different political regimes reveals that merely from 1978 to 1988 firms were facing external financial constraints whereas empirical results for pre and post financial sector reform periods reveals that firms were facing tight external financial constraints in pre financial sector reform era as compared to post financial sector reform era

The Effects of Water Friction Loss Calculation on the Thermal Field of the Canned Motor

    No full text
The thermal behavior of a canned motor also depends on the losses and the cooling capability, and these losses cause an increase in the temperature of the stator winding. This paper focuses on the modeling and simulation of the thermal fields of the large canned induction motor by different calculation methods of water friction loss. The values of water friction losses are set as heat sources in the corresponding clearance of water at different positions along the duct and are calculated by the analytical method, loss separation test method, and by assuming the values that may be larger than the experimental results and at zero. Based on Finite volume method (FVM), 3D turbulent flow and heat transfer equations of the canned motor are solve numerically to obtain the temperature distributions of different parts of the motor. The analysis results of water friction loss are compared with the measurements, obtained from the total losses using the loss separation method. The results show that the magnitude of water friction loss within various parts of the motor does not affect the position of peak temperature and the tendency of the temperature distribution of windings. This paper is highly significant for the design of cooling structures of electrical machines
