Chemisches Verhalten des sechswertigen Plutoniums in konzentrierten NaCl-Loesungen unter dem Einfluss der eigenen Alpha-Strahlung Zwischenbericht

Ziel des F und E Vorhabens ist es, am Beispiel des Gorleben Aquifersystems zu ueberpruefen, ob die im Labor gewonnenen Loeslichkeits- und Sorptionsdaten von Radionukliden auf natuerliche Bedingungen uebertragbar sind. Der vorliegende Zwischenbericht befasst sich mit dem Verhalten von sechswertigem Plutonium in stark salinen (5 M NaCl), CO_2-freien, waessrigen Loesungen unter dem Einfluss der Radiolyse durch die eigene #alpha#-Strahlung. Die Kenntnis der Chemie des Plutoniums, eines der wichtigsten Radionuklide im Inventar des hochradioaktiven Abfalls, im natuerlichen aquatischen Milieu ist von grundlegender Bedeutung fuer die Sicherheitsanalyse von Endlagerstaetten zur Entsorgung von waermeentwickelnden radioaktiven Abfaellen. Um die Komplexitaet der chemischen Reaktionen unter den oben genannten Bedingungen quantitativ zu erfassen, wurden die folgenden Untersuchungen durchgefuehrt: Radiolyse in konzentrierten NaCl-Loesungen durch #alpha#-Strahlung und daraus resultierende Redoxreaktionen des Cl"--Ions, radiolysebedingtes Redoxverhalten der Pu-Ionen, Stabilisierung des sechswertigen Plutoniums durch Komplexierung mit anionischen Liganden des Systems (Cl"-, OH"- und ClO"-), Loeseverhalten der PuO_2(OH)_2-Festphase in 5 M NaCl under radiolysierenden sowie ohne radiolysierende Bedingungen. Als Untersuchungsmethoden wurden hauptsaechlich die Absorptionsspektroskopie und radiometrische Verfahren eingesetzt. (orig.)The R + D work was to verify whether the laboratory data on the solubility and sorption of radionuclides are in compliance with natural conditions, as studied in the aquifer system of the Gorleben site. The progress report in hand deals with the behaviour of the hexavalent plutonium in strongly salty (5 M NaCl), CO_2-free, aqueous solutions under the effects of its own alpha radiation. Profound knowledge of the chemistry of plutonium, one of the major radionuclides in the high-level active waste from nuclear installations, and its behaviour in the natural aquatic environment is a fundamental requirement for any safety analysis of repositories for ultimate disposal of heat producing, radioactive waste. The following studies were performed in order to allow a quantitative assessment of the complex nature of the chemical reactions to be expected in a repository: radiolysis in concentrated NaCl solutions induced by alpha radiation, and the resulting redox reactions of the Cl"--ion; radiolysis-induced redox behaviour of the Pu ions; stabilisation of the hexavalent plutonium by way of complexation with anionic ligands of the system (Cl"-, OH"-, and ClO"-); solubility of the solid phase of PuO_2(OH)_2 in 5 M NaCl under conditions including and not including radiolytic reactions. Absorption spectroscopy and radiometric techniques were the major methods applied.
