Termination of Rewriting with and Automated Synthesis of Forbidden Patterns

We introduce a modified version of the well-known dependency pair framework that is suitable for the termination analysis of rewriting under forbidden pattern restrictions. By attaching contexts to dependency pairs that represent the calling contexts of the corresponding recursive function calls, it is possible to incorporate the forbidden pattern restrictions in the (adapted) notion of dependency pair chains, thus yielding a sound and complete approach to termination analysis. Building upon this contextual dependency pair framework we introduce a dependency pair processor that simplifies problems by analyzing the contextual information of the dependency pairs. Moreover, we show how this processor can be used to synthesize forbidden patterns suitable for a given term rewriting system on-the-fly during the termination analysis.Comment: In Proceedings IWS 2010, arXiv:1012.533

Is undergraduate programme accreditation influenced by educational public policy quality indicators? An exploratory study of the Chilean Higher Education quality assurance system

In Chile, as well as in most of Latin America, public policies for higher education have recently adopted a focus on quality assurance and accreditation systems. Uncertainty, however, still exists in terms of the quality assurance consistency in the current Chilean accreditation system, especially in terms of the relation between public policy quality indicators for higher education and their relation to accreditation outcomes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to make a first explorative attempt to investigate the relationships between these indicators and the results of undergraduate programme accreditation. We hypothesised that the public policy quality indicators of first-year drop-out rate, employment at graduation and ratio of actual to expected time to graduation would be strongly correlated to undergraduate programme accreditation as well as largely explaining its accreditation-year variance. By means of correlation and multiple regression analyses, we found small-sized associations, being first-year drop-out the only significant predictor of programme accreditation, explaining a 9.4% of its variance. These results raise questions regarding the consistency between the aims of public policy for higher education and the current accreditation system. This study should be of value to policy makers, managers and curriculum developers in terms of this initial analysis of the consistency between quality indicators and the accreditation system. Further research is necessary to make a systematic and in-depth assessment of the impact of quality assurance mechanisms to provide better rationale for making important decisions such as when defining the characteristics of the accrediting institutions as well as for establishing effective ways to achieve the proposed public policy objectives

Planning Collaborative Learning in Virtual Environments. La planificación del aprendizaje colaborativo en entornos virtuales

    Get PDF
Collaborative learning has a strong presence in technologysupported education and, as a result, practices being developed in the form of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) are more and more common. Planning seems to be one of the critical issues when elaborating CSCL proposals, which necessarily take into account technological resources, methodology and group configuration as a means to boost exchange and learning in the community. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relevance of the CSCL planning phase and weigh up the significance of its key design components as well as examining group agreement typology and its usefulness in team building and performance. To do so, research was carried out using a nonexperimental quantitative methodology consisting of a questionnaire answered by 106 undergraduate students from 5 different CSCLbased subjects. Results prove the usefulness of the planning components and the drafting of group agreements and their influence on group building and interaction. In order to ensure the quality of learning, it is essential to plan CSCL initiatives properly and understand that organizational, pedagogical and technological decisions should converge around a single goal which is to sustain the cognitive and social aspects that configure individual and group learning

Análisis de explosiones en estructuras y escenarios de interés público mediante simulaciones en ordenador

    Get PDF
In this paper we show the possible effects on public interest structures due to d - ynamic loads, specifically explosive loads. These results are based on computer analysis methods for the simulation of such events. We start with a description of the assembly process of environments or scenarios. We have used the specific case of a harbor with structures that can be affected directly or indirectly by an explosive load. We try to evaluate the possible consequences, on buildings and also on people who uses them by objective indicators such as damage (%), pressures, material stress, fragments velocities, etc

    Explicit substitutions and all that

Explicit substitution calculi are extensions of the λ-calculus where the substitution mechanism is internalized into the theory. This feature makes them suitable for implementation and theoretical study of logic based tools as strongly typed programming languages and proof assistant systems. In this paper we explore new developments on two of the most successful styles of explicit substitution calculi: theλσ and λse-calculi

    Guaranteed Proofs Using Interval Arithmetic

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper presents a set of tools for mechanical reasoning of numerical bounds using interval arithmetic. The tools implement two techniques for reducing decorrelation: interval splitting and Taylor's series expansions. Although the tools are designed for the proof assistant system PVS, expertise on PVS is not required. The ultimate goal of the tools is to provide guaranteed proofs of numerical properties with a minimal human-theorem prover interaction

Community intervention in the “613 houses district” in Burjassot (Valencia) cannot be understood without the Escoles Esportives 613 Vivendes association. This association was set up in 1994 through the endeavours of social agents existing at the time in the district: 613 Housing Neighbourhood Association, the Manantial Association for Human and Cultural Promotion, and Burjassot’s basic team of municipal Social Services, as well as a group of young people who thought that one way to ensure the promotion of children in underprivileged neighbourhoods was through practising sports
