Scientific Research in the Soviet Union
I report on the scientific aspects of my US/USSR Interacademy Exchange Visit to the Soviet Union. My research was conducted at three different institutes: the Lebedev Physical Institute in Moscow, the Leningrad Nuclear Physics Institute in Gatchina, and the Yerevan Physics Institute in Soviet Armenia. I included relevant information about the Soviet educational system, salaries of Soviet physicists, work habits and research activities at the three institutes, and the relevance of that research to work going on in the United States. 18 refs

B factory via conversion of 1 TeV electron beams into 1 TeV photon beams
We derive formulae which describe the interaction of laser beams with electron beams. Specializing to the case of 1 TeV electron beams from the future generation of electron linear accelerators, we calculate the production rate of backscattered 1 TeV photons, and using these photons, we show that it is possible to organize the photoproduction of beauty particles so as to measure 10/sup 9/b/bar b/ pairs per year. This should be adequate to study rare decays and CP violation in B meson decay. 9 refs., 1 fig
Phenomenology of the Deuteron Electromagnetic Form Factors
A rigorous extraction of the deuteron charge form factors from tensor
polarization data in elastic electron-deuteron scattering, at given values of
the 4-momentum transfer, is presented. Then the world data for elastic
electron-deuteron scattering is used to parameterize, in three different ways,
the three electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron in the 4-momentum
transfer range 0-7 fm^-1. This procedure is made possible with the advent of
recent polarization measurements. The parameterizations allow a
phenomenological characterization of the deuteron electromagnetic structure.
They can be used to remove ambiguities in the form factors extraction from
future polarization data.Comment: 18 pages (LaTeX), 2 figures Feb. 25: minor changes of content and in

A precise measurement of the deuteron elastic structure function A(Q^2)
The A(Q^2) structure function in elastic electron-deuteron scattering was
measured at six momentum transfers Q^2 between 0.66 and 1.80 (GeV/c)^2 in Hall
C at Jefferson Laboratory. The scattered electrons and recoil deuterons were
detected in coincidence, at a fixed deuteron angle of 60.5 degrees. These new
precise measurements resolve discrepancies between older sets of data. They put
significant constraints on existing models of the deuteron electromagnetic
structure, and on the strength of isoscalar meson exchange currents.Comment: 3 LaTeX pages plus 2 PS figure
Measurement of Tensor Polarization in Elastic Electron-Deuteron Scattering at Large Momentum Transfer
Tensor polarization observables (t20, t21 and t22) have been measured in
elastic electron-deuteron scattering for six values of momentum transfer
between 0.66 and 1.7 (GeV/c)^2. The experiment was performed at the Jefferson
Laboratory in Hall C using the electron HMS Spectrometer, a specially designed
deuteron magnetic channel and the recoil deuteron polarimeter POLDER. The new
data determine to much larger Q^2 the deuteron charge form factors G_C and G_Q.
They are in good agreement with relativistic calculations and disagree with
pQCD predictions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, for associated informations, see

A New Measurement of the Radiative Decay Width
High precision measurements of the differential cross sections for
photoproduction at forward angles for two nuclei, C and Pb, have
been performed for incident photon energies of 4.9 - 5.5 GeV to extract the
decay width. The experiment was done at Jefferson
Lab using the Hall B photon tagger and a high-resolution multichannel
calorimeter. The decay width was extracted by
fitting the measured cross sections using recently updated theoretical models
for the process. The resulting value for the decay width is . With the 2.8% total uncertainty, this result is a factor of 2.5 more
precise than the current PDG average of this fundamental quantity and it is
consistent with current theoretical predictions.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Near threshold electroproduction of the omega meson at Q2 ~ 0.5 GeV2
Electroproduction of the omega meson was investigated in the p(e,e'p)omega
reaction. The measurement was performed at a 4-momentum transfer Q2 ~ 0.5 GeV2.
Angular distributions of the virtual photon-proton center-of-momentum cross
sections have been extracted over the full angular range. These distributions
exhibit a strong enhancement over t-channel parity exchange processes in the
backward direction. According to a newly developed electroproduction model,
this enhancement provides significant evidence of resonance formation in the
gamma* p -> omega p reaction channel.Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, typos and references correcte
