Probabilistic Guarded P Systems, A New Formal Modelling Framework
Multienvironment P systems constitute a general, formal
framework for modelling the dynamics of population biology, which consists
of two main approaches: stochastic and probabilistic. The framework
has been successfully used to model biologic systems at both micro (e.g.
bacteria colony) and macro (e.g. real ecosystems) levels, respectively.
In this paper, we extend the general framework in order to include
a new case study related to P. Oleracea species. The extension is made
by a new variant within the probabilistic approach, called Probabilistic
Guarded P systems (in short, PGP systems). We provide a formal definition,
a simulation algorithm to capture the dynamics, and a survey of

The morbidity of urethral stricture disease among male Medicare beneficiaries
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To date, the morbidity of urethral stricture disease among American men has not been analyzed using national datasets. We sought to analyze the morbidity of urethral stricture disease by measuring the rates of urinary tract infections and urinary incontinence among men with a diagnosis of urethral stricture.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed Medicare claims data for 1992, 1995, 1998, and 2001 to estimate the rate of dual diagnoses of urethral stricture with urinary tract infection and with urinary incontinence occurring in the same year among a 5% sample of beneficiaries. Male Medicare beneficiaries receiving co-incident ICD-9 codes indicating diagnoses of urethral stricture and either urinary tract infection or urinary incontinence within the same year were counted.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The percentage of male patients with a diagnosis of urethral stricture who also were diagnosed with a urinary tract infection was 42% in 2001, an increase from 35% in 1992. Eleven percent of male Medicare beneficiaries with urethral stricture disease in 2001 were diagnosed with urinary incontinence in the same year. This represents an increase from 8% in 1992.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Among male Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with urethral stricture disease in 2001, 42% were also diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, and 11% with incontinence. Although the overall incidence of stricture disease decreased over this time period, these rates of dual diagnoses increased from 1992 to 2001. Our findings shed light into the health burden of stricture disease on American men. In order to decrease the morbidity of stricture disease, early definitive management of strictures is warranted.</p
Cross-sectional associations between sleep duration, sedentary time, physical activity, and adiposity indicators among Canadian preschool-aged children using compositional analyses
Abstract Background Sleep duration, sedentary behaviour, and physical activity are three co-dependent behaviours that fall on the movement/non-movement intensity continuum. Compositional data analyses provide an appropriate method for analyzing the association between co-dependent movement behaviour data and health indicators. The objectives of this study were to examine: (1) the combined associations of the composition of time spent in sleep, sedentary behaviour, light-intensity physical activity (LPA), and moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) with adiposity indicators; and (2) the association of the time spent in sleep, sedentary behaviour, LPA, or MVPA with adiposity indicators relative to the time spent in the other behaviours in a representative sample of Canadian preschool-aged children. Methods Participants were 552 children aged 3 to 4 years from cycles 2 and 3 of the Canadian Health Measures Survey. Sedentary time, LPA, and MVPA were measured with Actical accelerometers (Philips Respironics, Bend, OR USA), and sleep duration was parental reported. Adiposity indicators included waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) z-scores based on World Health Organization growth standards. Compositional data analyses were used to examine the cross-sectional associations. Results The composition of movement behaviours was significantly associated with BMI z-scores (p = 0.006) but not with WC (p = 0.718). Further, the time spent in sleep (BMI z-score: γ sleep = −0.72; p = 0.138; WC: γ sleep = −1.95; p = 0.285), sedentary behaviour (BMI z-score: γ SB = 0.19; p = 0.624; WC: γ SB = 0.87; p = 0.614), LPA (BMI z-score: γ LPA = 0.62; p = 0.213, WC: γ LPA = 0.23; p = 0.902), or MVPA (BMI z-score: γ MVPA = −0.09; p = 0.733, WC: γ MVPA = 0.08; p = 0.288) relative to the other behaviours was not significantly associated with the adiposity indicators. Conclusions This study is the first to use compositional analyses when examining associations of co-dependent sleep duration, sedentary time, and physical activity behaviours with adiposity indicators in preschool-aged children. The overall composition of movement behaviours appears important for healthy BMI z-scores in preschool-aged children. Future research is needed to determine the optimal movement behaviour composition that should be promoted in this age group
Live imaging of neolymphangiogenesis identifies acute antimetastatic roles of dsRNA mimics.
Long-range communication between tumor cells and the lymphatic vasculature defines competency for metastasis in different cancer types, particularly in melanoma. Nevertheless, the discovery of selective blockers of lymphovascular niches has been compromised by the paucity of experimental systems for whole-body analyses of tumor progression. Here, we exploit immunocompetent and immunodeficient mouse models for live imaging of Vegfr3-driven neolymphangiogenesis, as a versatile platform for drug screening in vivo. Spatiotemporal analyses of autochthonous melanomas and patient-derived xenografts identified double-stranded RNA mimics (dsRNA nanoplexes) as potent inhibitors of neolymphangiogenesis, metastasis, and post-surgical disease relapse. Mechanistically, dsRNA nanoplexes were found to exert a rapid dual action in tumor cells and in their associated lymphatic vasculature, involving the transcriptional repression of the lymphatic drivers Midkine and Vegfr3, respectively. This suppressive function was mediated by a cell-autonomous type I interferon signaling and was not shared by FDA-approved antimelanoma treatments. Using Bayesian Networks and Machine Learning to Predict Computer Science Success
Bayesian Networks and Machine Learning techniques were
evaluated and compared for predicting academic performance of Computer
Science students at the University of Cape Town. Bayesian Networks
performed similarly to other classification models. The causal links AQ1
inherent in Bayesian Networks allow for understanding of the contributing
factors for academic success in this field. The most effective indicators
of success in first-year ‘core’ courses in Computer Science included the
student’s scores for Mathematics and Physics as well as their aptitude for
learning and their work ethos. It was found that unsuccessful students
could be identified with ≈91% accuracy. This could help to increase
throughput as well as student wellbeing at university
The Classical Harmonic Vibrations of the Atomic Centers of Mass with Micro Amplitudes and Low Frequencies Monitored by the Entanglement between the Two Two-level Atoms in a Single mode Cavity
We study the entanglement dynamics of the two two-level atoms coupling with a
single-mode polarized cavity field after incorporating the atomic centers of
mass classical harmonic vibrations with micro amplitudes and low frequencies.
We propose a quantitative vibrant factor to modify the concurrence of the two
atoms states. When the vibrant frequencies are very low, we obtain that: (i)
the factor depends on the relative vibrant displacements and the initial phases
rather than the absolute amplitudes, and reduces the concurrence to three
orders of magnitude; (ii) the concurrence increases with the increase of the
initial phases; (iii) the frequency of the harmonic vibration can be obtained
by measuring the maximal value of the concurrence during a small time. These
results indicate that even the extremely weak classical harmonic vibrations can
be monitored by the entanglement of quantum states.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

High energy emission from microquasars
The microquasar phenomenon is associated with the production of jets by X-ray
binaries and, as such, may be associated with the majority of such systems. In
this chapter we briefly outline the associations, definite, probable, possible,
