This is an electronic version of an article published in the Journal of Library Administration, volume 56, issue 3. 2016. Journal of Library Administration is available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/01930826.2015.1105051.This article describes how the University of Utah’s J. Willard Marriott Library implemented a competency-based talent management system across the organization to address organizational, departmental, and individual needs. Success of the implementation was mixed. Designing human resources systems around core competencies made organizational values and goals concrete but proved unsustainable in the long-term. Using core competencies to shape departmental goals, coach staff and library faculty, and onboard new employees proved beneficial at the middle management level

Shaniah Morning Star Chee. Shaniah was selected as one of the recipients of the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award. Shaniah utilized both her Anthropology major and American Indian Studies minor in research on the significance of firewood. "From the experience I've had these past 2 years, almost 3, I have gained a level of confidence to go out of comfort zone, as well as take notice to the importance of harvesting wood on the Navajo Nation, my home. My goal is to continue to educate those who don't know the importance of harvesting wood is more than just for warmth, it has the ability to provide my people with shelter and for ceremonial purposes, and the process it takes to get it isn't an easy task."
