The role of mucilage in the attachment of conidia, germ tubes and appressoria in the saprobic aquatic hyphomycetes Lemonniera aquatica and Mycocentrospora filiformis
Spore attachment of the saprobic aquatic Hyphomycetes Lemonniera aquatica and Mycocentrospora filiformis was compared on Thermanox cover slips at the scanning and transmission electron microscope levels. The strength of attachment to Perspex discs was measured with the Fowler cell adhesion measurement module. Data are presented on the initial attachment of conidia and subsequent attachment of germ tubes, hyphae, and appressoria. Attachment at all stages was mediated by mucilage. Both fungi exhibited a similar strength of initial conidial attachment, but attachment resulted from different strategies: (i) in L. aquatica, by active release of mucilage as a result of a thigmotropic response to the substratum; (ii) in M. filiformis, by a passive process involving attachment by pre-existing conidial mucilage prior to contact with the substratum. The strength of attachment increased with settlement time. A fast germination rate, concurrent with mucilage production, resulted in the firm attachment of L. aquatica conidia, while initial germination in M. filiformis was slow and this corresponded to a comparatively weaker conidial attachment. Further increase in the strength of attachment was the result of greater hyphal development, and most importantly, by appressorium formation. All these structures were enrobed in a mucilanginous sheath, although variations were observed in the morphology and texture of mucilages. Tirisporella gen. nov., an ascomycete from the mangrove palm Nypa fruticans
Tirisporella beccariana comb.nov. is redescribed from decomposing leaf petiole (or rachis) bases of Nypa fruticans recently collected in Malaysia and the Philippiines. The superficial ascomata bear bitunicate asci with (3-)5(-7)-septate ascospores that are brown and verrucose, except for the prominent hyaline basal cell, and furnished with a distinctive apical appendage that arises from the spore wall. Te ultrastructure of the fungus is contrasted with that of species of Corollospora and Corallicola, with particular reference to the mode of ascospore appendage formation. The species was originally described from a Sarawak collection as Sphaeria becariana and later transferred to Melanomma and given the new name Melanomma cesatianum. Gibberidea nipae is a synonym. The recent collections were compared with type specimens. The fungus is not properly placed in Melanomma or Gibberidea or other known genera and a new genus Tiriporella is described.published_or_final_versio
Fantasizing with Dual GPs in Bayesian Optimization and Active Learning
Gaussian processes (GPs) are the main surrogate functions used for sequential
modelling such as Bayesian Optimization and Active Learning. Their drawbacks
are poor scaling with data and the need to run an optimization loop when using
a non-Gaussian likelihood. In this paper, we focus on `fantasizing' batch
acquisition functions that need the ability to condition on new fantasized data
computationally efficiently. By using a sparse Dual GP parameterization, we
gain linear scaling with batch size as well as one-step updates for
non-Gaussian likelihoods, thus extending sparse models to greedy batch

Probing the link between biodiversity-related knowledge and self-reported pro-conservation behaviour in a global survey of zoo visitors
Many environmental communication interventions are built on the assumption that increased knowledge will lead to changes in proenvironment behaviors. Our study probes the link between biodiversity-related knowledge and self-reported proconservation behavior, based on the largest and most international study of zoo visitors ever conducted. In total, 6,357 visitors to 30 zoos from 19 countries around the globe participated in the study. Biodiversity understanding and knowledge of actions to help protect biodiversity were significantly related, but only 0.6% of the variation in knowledge of actions to help protect biodiversity could be explained by those same respondents’ biodiversity understanding. Biodiversity understanding was only the sixth most important variable in significantly predicting knowledge of actions to help protect biodiversity. Moreover, biodiversity understanding was the least important variable of those that were significantly related to self-reported proconservation behavior. Our study indicates that knowledge is a real, but relatively minor, factor in predicting whether members of the public – zoo visitors in this case – will know about specific proenvironment behaviors they can take, let alone whether they will actually undertake such behaviors

Keeping connected : identity, social connection and education for young people living with chronic illness
The ‘Keeping Connected’ project was a three year project \ud
(2006-2009) co-funded by the Australian Research Council\ud
and The Royal Children’s Hospital Education Institute.\ud
Its focus was on young people who experience chronic illness-related \ud
interruptions to their schooling. Its aims were to make visible the young\ud
people, their experiences, voices, and concerns, and to explore the ways\ud
in which they were being supported or hampered in various aspects\ud
of their education trajectories. \ud
The project brought together a large multi-disciplinary research team working\ud
in collaboration with the RCH Education Institute with the aim of achieving\ud
a better understanding of issues related to the support and engagement\ud
of young people living and learning with ongoing health conditions.\ud
Who and what do young people feel is important in creating, strengthening,\ud
and maintaining educational and social connections in their lives? What do \ud
parents feel are significant supports or challenges for young people (and their \ud
families) experiencing interrupted schooling due to ongoing health issues?\ud
What do education and health care professionals see as key areas of focus\ud
in supporting young people to maintain social and educational connections?\ud
This report highlights the clear and pressing need for a system of advocacy\ud
on the part of young people and families within both health and education\ud
systems—and between schools and hospitals. The Royal Children’s Hospital \ud
Education Institute is well positioned to influence policy and practice\ud
across these sectors
Implantable cardioverter defibrillators for the treatment of arrhythmias and cardiac resynchronisation therapy for the treatment of heart failure: systematic review and economic evaluation
Background
This assessment updates and expands on two previous technology assessments that evaluated implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) for arrhythmias and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) for heart failure (HF).
Objectives
To assess the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of ICDs in addition to optimal pharmacological therapy (OPT) for people at increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) as a result of ventricular arrhythmias despite receiving OPT; to assess CRT with or without a defibrillator (CRT-D or CRT-P) in addition to OPT for people with HF as a result of left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) and cardiac dyssynchrony despite receiving OPT; and to assess CRT-D in addition to OPT for people with both conditions.
Data sources
Electronic resources including MEDLINE, EMBASE and The Cochrane Library were searched from inception to November 2012. Additional studies were sought from reference lists, clinical experts and manufacturers’ submissions to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
Review methods
Inclusion criteria were applied by two reviewers independently. Data extraction and quality assessment were undertaken by one reviewer and checked by a second. Data were synthesised through narrative review and meta-analyses. For the three populations above, randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing (1) ICD with standard therapy, (2) CRT-P or CRT-D with each other or with OPT and (3) CRT-D with OPT, CRT-P or ICD were eligible. Outcomes included mortality, adverse events and quality of life. A previously developed Markov model was adapted to estimate the cost-effectiveness of OPT, ICDs, CRT-P and CRT-D in the three populations by simulating disease progression calculated at 4-weekly cycles over a lifetime horizon.
Results
A total of 4556 references were identified, of which 26 RCTs were included in the review: 13 compared ICD with medical therapy, four compared CRT-P/CRT-D with OPT and nine compared CRT-D with ICD. ICDs reduced all-cause mortality in people at increased risk of SCD, defined in trials as those with previous ventricular arrhythmias/cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction (MI) > 3 weeks previously, non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy (depending on data included) or ischaemic/non-ischaemic HF and left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 35%. There was no benefit in people scheduled for coronary artery bypass graft. A reduction in SCD but not all-cause mortality was found in people with recent MI. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) ranged from £14,231 per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) to £29,756 per QALY for the scenarios modelled. CRT-P and CRT-D reduced mortality and HF hospitalisations, and improved other outcomes, in people with HF as a result of LVSD and cardiac dyssynchrony when compared with OPT. The rate of SCD was lower with CRT-D than with CRT-P but other outcomes were similar. CRT-P and CRT-D compared with OPT produced ICERs of £27,584 per QALY and £27,899 per QALY respectively. The ICER for CRT-D compared with CRT-P was £28,420 per QALY. In people with both conditions, CRT-D reduced the risk of all-cause mortality and HF hospitalisation, and improved other outcomes, compared with ICDs. Complications were more common with CRT-D. Initial management with OPT alone was most cost-effective (ICER £2824 per QALY compared with ICD) when health-related quality of life was kept constant over time. Costs and QALYs for CRT-D and CRT-P were similar. The ICER for CRT-D compared with ICD was £27,195 per QALY and that for CRT-D compared with OPT was £35,193 per QALY.
Limitations
Limitations of the model include the structural assumptions made about disease progression and treatment provision, the extrapolation of trial survival estimates over time and the assumptions made around parameter values when evidence was not available for specific patient groups.
Conclusions
In people at risk of SCD as a result of ventricular arrhythmias and in those with HF as a result of LVSD and cardiac dyssynchrony, the interventions modelled produced ICERs of < £30,000 per QALY gained. In people with both conditions, the ICER for CRT-D compared with ICD, but not CRT-D compared with OPT, was < £30,000 per QALY, and the costs and QALYs for CRT-D and CRT-P were similar. A RCT comparing CRT-D and CRT-P in people with HF as a result of LVSD and cardiac dyssynchrony is required, for both those with and those without an ICD indication. A RCT is also needed into the benefits of ICD in non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy in the absence of dyssynchrony.

Induced Photon Correlations Through the Overlap of Two Four-Wave Mixing Processes in Integrated Cavities
Induced photon correlations are directly demonstrated by exploring two coupled nonlinear processes in an integrated device. Using orthogonally polarized modes within an integrated microring cavity, phase matching of two different nonlinear four-wave mixing processes is achieved simultaneously, wherein both processes share one target frequency mode, while their other frequency modes differ. The overlap of these modes leads to the coupling of both nonlinear processes, producing photon correlations. The nature of this process is confirmed by means of time- and power-dependent photon correlation measurements. These findings are relevant to the fundamental understanding of spontaneous parametric effects as well as single-photon-induced processes, and their effect on optical quantum state generation and control
