The card game SET and finite geometry

    Get PDF
This thesis explores the underlying mathematics of the card game SET, which is a fast-paced pattern recognition game played with 81 cards. The game involves making SETs of three cards with certain compatibility conditions based on their color, shape, filling, and number properties. The first section gives an introduction to the game and its rules. The subsequent sections cover various mathematical concepts related to SET, such as counting SETs, modular arithmetic, and finite affine geometry. Section seven describes how simulations can be used to deal with a number of problems or questions related to the game. The thesis concludes by discussing how the game SET can be used in the classroom to develop cognitive and social skills in students. Through its exploration of the mathematical principles underlying the game, this thesis exposes the strong connection between SET and finite geometry, and offers insights into the use of SET as an educational tool

Electromagnetic inductance plethysmography is well suited to measure tidal breathing in infants

    Get PDF
Reliable, accurate and noninvasive methods for measuring lung function in infants are desirable. Electromagnetic inductance plethysmography has been used to perform infant spirometry and VoluSense Pediatrics (VSP) (VoluSense, Bergen, Norway) represents an updated version of this technique. We aimed to examine its accuracy compared to a validated system measuring airflow via a facemask using an ultrasonic flowmeter. We tested 30 infants with postmenstrual ages between 36 to 43 weeks and weights from 2.3 to 4.8 kg, applying both methods simultaneously and applying VSP alone. Agreement between the methods was calculated using Bland–Altman analyses and we also estimated the effect of applying the mask. Mean differences for all breathing parameters were within ±5.5% and limits of agreement between the two methods were acceptable, except perhaps for peak tidal expiratory flow (PTEF). Application of the facemask significantly increased tidal volume, minute ventilation, PTEF, the ratio of inspiratory to expiratory time and the ratio of expiratory flow at 50% of expired volume to PTEF. VSP accurately measured tidal breathing parameters and seems well suited for tidal breathing measurements in infants under treatment with equipment that precludes the use of a facemask.publishedVersio

Age and metabolic risk factors associated with oxidatively damaged DNA in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells

Aging is associated with oxidative stress-generated damage to DNA and this could be related to metabolic disturbances. This study investigated the association between levels of oxidatively damaged DNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and metabolic risk factors in 1,019 subjects, aged 18-93 years. DNA damage was analyzed as strand breaks by the comet assay and levels of formamidopyrimidine (FPG-) and human 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase 1 (hOGG1)-sensitive sites There was an association between age and levels of FPG-sensitive sites for women, but not for men. The same tendency was observed for the level of hOGG1-sensitive sites, whereas there was no association with the level of strand breaks. The effect of age on oxidatively damaged DNA in women disappeared in multivariate models, which showed robust positive associations between DNA damage and plasma levels of triglycerides, cholesterol and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)). In the group of men, there were significant positive associations between alcohol intake, HbA(1c) and FPG-sensitive sites in multivariate analysis. The levels of metabolic risk factors were positively associated with age, yet only few subjects fulfilled all metabolic syndrome criteria. In summary, positive associations between age and levels of oxidatively damaged DNA appeared mediated by age-related increases in metabolic risk factors
