    NON-LINEAR ADAPTIVE PHENOMENA WHICH DECREASE THE RISK OF INFECTION AFTER PRE-EXPOSURE TO RADIOFREQUENCY RADIATION

    Substantial evidence indicates that adaptive response induced by low doses of ionizing radiation can result in resistance to the damage caused by a subsequently high-dose radiation or cause cross-resistance to other non-radiation stressors. Adaptive response contradicts the linear-non-threshold (LNT) dose-response model for ionizing radiation. We have previously reported that exposure of laboratory animals to radiofrequency radiation can induce a survival adaptive response. Furthermore, we have indicated that pre-exposure of mice to radiofrequency radiation emitted by a GSM mobile phone increased their resistance to a subsequent Escherichia coli infection. In this study, the survival rates in animals receiving both adapting (radiofrequency) and challenge dose (bacteria) and the animals receiving only the challenge dose (bacteria) were 56% and 20%, respectively. In this light, our findings contribute to the assumption that radiofrequency-induced adaptive response can be used as an efficient method for decreasing the risk of infection in immunosuppressed irradiated individuals. The implication of this phenomenon in human’s long term stay in the space is also discussed

    Entrance surface dose measurement on the thyroid gland in orthopantomography: The need for optimization

    Background: The anatomic position and proven radiosensitivity of the thyroid make it an organ of concern in dental X-ray examinations. A National Radiation Protection Department (NRPD)-sponsored pilot study carried out in the Dental Radiology Department of RUMS., to assess if the radiation dose in panoramic radiographies could be reduced without significant impairment of the subjective image quality. Materials and Methods: Thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD) is widely acknowledged to be the recommended method for measuring entrance surface doses (ESD). In this study, ESD was measured using LiF thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD-100) on the thyroid of 40 patients who had referred to the School of Dentistry, Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences. Patients were not exposed to any additional radiation and the radiographs were used for diagnostic purposes. TLDs were calibrated with radiation energies similar to those commonly used in orthopantomography. Results: The overall mean ESD on the thyroid in orthopantomography was 0.071 ± 0.012 mGy (ranged from 0.01 to 0.40 mGy). The mean ESD for radiographies performed with 66 kVp (20 patients) and 68 kVp (20 patients) were 0.072 ± 0.019, and 0.070 ± 0.016 respectively. No statistically significant difference was found between these means. Conclusions: The measured surface doses in our study are inconsistent with the only one already reported about the same experiment. However, due to lack of national diagnostic reference levels for orthopantomography, it is not clear whether in case of the PM 2002 CC unit used in this experiment, reducing the radiation dose to a level that still keeps a diagnostically acceptable image quality is necessary

    Efficacy of 16S rRNA variable regions high-resolution melt analysis for bacterial pathogens identification in periprosthetic joint infections

    Background: Accurate and rapid identification of microorganisms causing periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are necessary for choosing an appropriate antibiotic therapy. Therefore, molecular techniques are suggested for diagnosis in suspected PJIs. The Broad-range PCR and High-Resolution Melt Analysis (HRMA) were evaluated for the identification of causative organisms of PJIs in this study. Results: For 47 of 63 specimens, both the culture and broad-range PCR were positive. The culture was found to be able of organism�s detection in 74.6 (47/63) of patients. Of 47 positive cultures, 11 (23.4) were polymicrobial and 36 (76.59) were monomicrobial cultures, in which 34 (91.89) cases were detected by HRM assay. The sensitivity, specificity of HRMA vs monomicrobial culture were 91.89, 93.75, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity of total HRMA (mono + poly) vs culture were 82.92, 93.75. Conclusions: HRM assay coupled with broad-range PCR are effective screening, rapid, and relatively cost-effective methods for discrimination of PJIs especially in aiding culture method. Using computer programs such as the Matlab-2018b program for HRM data analysis is also valuable and helpful in diagnosis. © 2021, The Author(s)

    A pre-exposure to RF-EMF can enhance the immune responses of mice following Salmonella Typhimurium and Klebsiella pneumoniae infections

    Background: The queston of whether low levels of non-ionizing radiatons such as the radiofrequency electromagnetc fields (RF-EMF) can induce the same positve immune responses remains unanswered. This study aimed to investgate the effects of non-ionizing RF-EMF on some parameters of the immune system in an animal model following infecton with Salmonella Typhimurium and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Materials and Methods: Male BALB/c mice were exposed to RF-EMFs generated by a common GSM mobile phone for 3 days. Animals were infected with K. pneumonia or S. Typhimurium on the 4thday. On the7thday after injecton, blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture. The specific antbodies against bacteria were determined by agglutnaton method and serum levels of the cytokines were measured using the ELISA method. Moreover, the leukocytes count was measured using a cell counter. Results: The levels of specific antbodies against bacteria were higher in non-irradiated mice compared to irradiated mice. There were no significant differences between the irradiated and non-irradiated mice regarding the total blood leukocyte count. The mean serum levels of IFN-γ and IL-17 after infecton with K. pneumoniae were significantly higher in the irradiated mice (p<0.001). Conclusions: Low levels of RF-EMF can stmulate the immune responses in the mice pre-exposed to RF-EMF. This study provides further evidence supportng that exposure to certain levels of RF-EMF can stmulate the immune system. These adaptve responses may be applied to cope with the increased susceptbility of the astronauts to infectons during a deep space mission

    Abstract We have read with interest the article by Lu et al. entitled “Association of excessive mobile phone use during pregnancy with birth weight: an adjunct study in Kumamoto of Japan Environment and Children’s Study” published recently in the Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine. Although this paper addresses a very challenging issue, it has some shortcomings. Mortazavi et al. have previously studied the effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation on birth weight of newborns and found no statistical significant differences between the mean weight of newborns whose mothers had been exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMF) generated by mobile phones and those of non-exposed mothers. The study performed by Lu et al. cannot answer this very key question that whether ordinary use of mobile phone during pregnancy can lead to low birth weight. The origin of the controversy between the findings of these two studies and the shortcomings of the article by Lu et al. are discussed
