Distribution of red deepsea crab (Chaceon quinquedens) by size and sex in the Gulf of Mexico

    Get PDF
The red deepsea crab (Chaceon quinquedens (Smith, 1879)) has supported a commercial fishery off the coast of New England since the 1970s (Wigley et al., 1975) and has had annual harvests from 400 metric tons (t) (1996) to 4000 t (2001) (NEFMC, 2002). In 2002, a fishery management plan for the northeast fishery on the Atlantic coast was implemented and total allowable catch was reduced to approximately 2500 t (NEFMC, 2002). Although there are management plans for the golden crab (C. fenneri) and the red deep sea crab for Atlantic coast regions, there is no fishery management plan for red deepsea crabs in the Gulf of Mexico. Successful management for sustainable harvests should be based on a knowledge of the life history of the species, but C. quinquedens has been a difficult species for which to obtain life history and abundance information because of its deep distribution

    Unmeasured anions: the unknown unknowns

    Get PDF
Evidence is emerging that elevated concentrations of the intermediates of the citric acid cycle may contribute to unmeasured anions in critical illness. Both the anion gap and the strong ion gap are used as scanning tools for recognition of these anions. The mechanisms underlying these elevations and their significance require further clarification

A PROBIT MODEL ANALYSIS OF FACTORS AFFECTING CONSUMPTION OF FRESH SWEET CORN IN MAJOR U.S. MARKETS

    Get PDF
In an effort to more effectively utilize its resources to promote fresh sweet corn, the Fresh Supersweet Corn Council contracted with the Florida Agricultural Market Research Center (FAMRC) of the University of Florida to conduct a comprehensive consumer survey. The consumer survey was designed to investigate consumer preferences, attitudes, and behavior regarding the purchase and consumption of fresh sweet corn. A total of 1,031 consumer telephone interviews were conducted in Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia between September 7 and November 3, 2001. Respondents' revealed very limited consumption in the winter, spring, and fall seasons and consumers' perceptions that sweet corn is not available in these seasons. Probit models are estimated to determine effects of seasonalityConsumer/Household Economics,

The kinetics of surfactant desorption at the air–solution interface

    Get PDF
The kinetics of desorption of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate at the air–solution interface have been studied using neutron reflectivity (NR). The experimental arrangement incorporates a novel flow cell in which the subphase can be exchanged (diluted) using a laminar flow whilst the surface region remains unaltered. The kinetics of the desorption is relatively slow and occurs over many tens of minutes compared with the dilution timescale of approximately 10–30 minutes. A detailed mathematical model, in which the rate of the desorption is determined by transport through a near-surface diffusion layer into a diluted bulk solution below, is developed and provides a good description of the timedependent adsorption data.\ud \ud A key parameter of the model is the ratio of the depth of the diffusion layer, Hc , to the depth of the fluid, Hf, and we find that this is related to the reduced PĂ©clet number, Pe*, for the system, via Hc/Hf, = C/Pe* 1/ 2 . Although from a highly idealised experimental arrangement, the results provide an important insight into the ‘rinse mechanism’, which is applicable to a wide variety of domestic and industrial circumstances

    Grief, Bereavement, and Positive Psychology

    Get PDF
What does positive psychology have to offer people who are grieving? We explore this question in depth and consider how viewing bereavement and grief through the lens of positive psychology can help to normalize the grieving process and encourage the use of effective coping approaches. We provide research evidence in support of narrative reconstruction, posttraumatic growth, positive emotions, and spirituality as means to help survivors of loss to adjust and even to gain a new sense of meaning. We provide practical suggestions for individuals who are grieving and for those who are in relationship with them
