    Get PDF
We study the two-neutrino double-beta decay in 76Ge, 116Cd, 128Te, 130Te, and 150Nd, as well as the two Gamow-Teller branches that connect the double-beta decay partners with the states in the intermediate nuclei. We use a theoretical microscopic approach based on a deformed selfconsistent mean field with Skyrme interactions including pairing and spin-isospin residual forces, which are treated in a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation. We compare our results for Gamow-Teller strength distributions with experimental information obtained from charge-exchange reactions. We also compare our results for the two-neutrino double-beta decay nuclear matrix elements with those extracted from the measured half-lives. Both single-state and low-lying-state dominance hypotheses are analyzed theoretically and experimentally making use of recent data from charge-exchange reactions and beta decay of the intermediate nuclei.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1502.0588

Warm dark matter sterile neutrinos in electron capture and beta decay spectra

We briefly review the motivation to search for sterile neutrinos in the keV mass scale, as dark matter candidates, and the prospects to find them in beta decay or electron capture spectra, with a global perspective. We describe the fundamentals of the neutrino flavor-mass eigenstate mismatch that opens the possibility of detecting sterile neutrinos in such ordinary nuclear processes. Results are shown and discussed for the effect of heavy neutrino emission in electron capture in Holmium 163 and in two isotopes of Lead, 202 and 205, as well as in the beta decay of Tritium. We study the de-excitation spectrum in the considered cases of electron capture and the charged lepton spectrum in the case of Tritium beta decay. For each of these cases, we define ratios of integrated transition rates over different regions of the spectrum under study, and give new results that may guide and facilitate the analysis of possible future measurements, paying particular attention to forbidden transitions in Lead isotopes.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

Theoretical mean field and experimental occupation probabilities in the double beta decay system 76Ge to 76Se

Usual Woods-Saxon single particle levels with BCS pairing are not able to reproduce the experimental occupation probabilities of the proton and neutron levels 1p_{3/2}, 1p_{1/2}, 0f_{5/2}, 0g_{9/2} in the double-beta decay system 76Ge to 76Se. Shifting down the 0g_{9/2} level by hand can explain the data but it is not satisfactory. Here it is shown that a selfconsistent Hartree-Fock+BCS approach with experimental deformations for 76Ge and 76Se may decisively improve the agreement with the recent data on occupation probabilities by Schiffer et al. and Kay et al. Best agreement with available data on 76Ge and 76Se, as well as on neighbor isotopes, is obtained when the spin-orbit strength for neutrons is allowed to be larger than that for protons. The two-neutrino double-beta decay matrix element is also shown to agree with data.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

When viruses play team sports : mixed infections in plants

    Get PDF
Altres ajuts: Generalitat de Catalunya/CERCA ProgrammeThe pathological importance of mixed viral infections in plants might be underestimated except for a few well-characterized synergistic combinations in certain crops. Considering that the host ranges of many viruses often overlap and that most plant species can be infected by several unrelated viruses, it is not surprising to find more than one virus simultaneously in the same plant. Furthermore, dispersal of the majority of plant viruses relies on efficient transmission mechanisms mediated by vector organisms, mainly but not exclusively insects, which can contribute to the occurrence of multiple infections in the same plant. Recent work using different experimental approaches has shown that mixed viral infections can be remarkably frequent, up to the point that they could be considered the rule more than the exception. The purpose of this review is to describe the impact of multiple infections not only on the participating viruses themselves but also on their vectors and on the common host. From this standpoint, mixed infections arise as complex events that involve several cross-interacting players, and they consequently require a more general perspective than the analysis of single-virus/single-host approaches for a full understanding of their relevance

Nuclear shape dependence of Gamow-Teller distributions in neutron-deficient Pb isotopes

    Get PDF
We study Gamow-Teller strength distributions in the neutron-deficient even isotopes (184-194)Pb in a search for signatures of deformation. The microscopic formalism used is based on a deformed quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) approach, which involves a self-consistent quasiparticle deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock (HF) basis and residual spin-isospin forces in both the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. By analyzing the sensitivity of the Gamow-Teller strength distributions to the various ingredients in the formalism, we conclude that the beta-decay of these isotopes could be a useful tool to look for fingerprints of nuclear deformation.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. This document is the Accepted Manuscript version. The final, definitive version of this paper has been published in YOUNG, Vol 25 (4), November 2017, doi: https://doi.org/10.1177/1103308816646672, published by SAGE Publishing, All rights reserved.Sense of coherence (SOC) is receiving increasing attention from a number of disciplines interested in the study of adolescent positive development. Given the significant links between SOC and well-being, attention is now moving to the precursors of SOC. The aim of this study was to analyze the contribution of relationships with parents and teachers (contextual factors) to young people’s SOC while taking into account the potential role of individual differences in prosociality and hyperactivity-inattention (individual factors). The sample consisted of 2,979 adolescents aged 15–18 who had participated in the 2010 edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) survey ‘Health Behaviour in School-aged Children’ (HBSC) in Spain. Data were collected by means of anonymous online questionnaires, and statistical analyses included factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Both contextual and individual factors made significant contributions to the adolescents’ SOC. Importantly, the significance of relationships with parents and teachers remained once prosociality and hyperactivity-inattention were taken into account.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

Multiple sclerosis is included in the group of idiopathic inflammatory demyelinating diseases. It is considered as a chronic autoimmune disease of the SNC, and is characterized by inflammation, demyelination and neuronal loss, followed by reactive gliosis. Although the etiology of the disorder is not known, most researchers agree that an unknown environmental factor may induce an immune response in genetically predisposed patients. One of the main consequences of the process is central demyelination. As a result, saltatory conduction of normal myelinated pathways is altered, slowing or even blocking the transmission of action potentials, leading to the appearance of the disease symptoms. The diagnosis of MS is clinical and supported onmagnetic resonance data. First choice treatment includes glatiramer acetate and interferon-β, followed by natalizumab. Patients studied at Hospital General de Guadalajara showed similar characteristics of those seen in the international literature: preferred incidence in women (20-40 years), initial manifestations of optic neuritis, paresthesia, paresis and pain. Treatment was effective in 71% of patients studied and fatigue was the most persistent symptom. Pain treatment, however, was very effective, as it was not considered one of their main concerns.Grado en Farmaci

This is the Accepted Manuscript version of the following article: I. García-Moya, F. Brooks, A. Morgan, and C. Moreno, “Subjective well-being in adolescence and teacher connectedness. A health asset analysis.”, Health Education Journal. Vol. 74(6), November 2015. The final published version is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1177/0017896914555039 © The Author(s) 2014.Objectives: Teacher connectedness is an important factor for young people's well-being. The aim of this paper was to examine teacher connectedness in detail and its potential association with emotional well-being. More specifically, we set out to analyse whether teacher connectedness acted as a universal asset for boys and girls of different ages and countries as well as across adolescents with differing perceptions of their performance at school. Methods: The study sample consisted of 9,444 young people aged 11, 13 and 15 years who had taken part in the World Health Organization (WHO) collaborative survey Health Behaviour in School-aged Children in Spain and England. After examining differences in teacher connectedness associated with demographic factors, we used general linear models to analyse the relationship between teacher connectedness and emotional well-being (including interaction teacher connectedness by country) across different age and performance-derived groups. Results: Results indicated some significant differences in teacher connectedness associated with age, country and perceived performance, but a consistent positive association between teacher connectedness and emotional well-being regardless of demographic factors, country and perceptions of school performance. Older adolescents and low achievers reported lower level of connectedness to their teachers, but the association between teacher connectedness and emotional well-being operated irrespective of adolescents' age and perceived performance at school. Conclusion: Results support the perspective that teacher connectedness can act as a significant health asset that operates irrespective of key demographic factors, while they point to some inequalities in teacher connectedness associated with age and performance at school. These findings have significant implications for health promotion interventions.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
