Cryogenic pressure temperature swing adsorption process for natural gas upgrade

The energy and chemical sectors are suffering remarkable changes. In this way, producing abundant quantity of energy with high quality, economic and environmental viability and sustainability is the main concern of the present times. One of such vital components of the world’s energy supply that fulfills the abovementioned requirements is natural gas [1]. Natural gas consists of 85–95% methane, but it also contains considerable amounts of heavier hydrocarbons as well as other compounds (CO2, N2, Hg, He, H2S) [1]. In order to meet the pipeline quality standard specifications or Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production, impurities must be removed. Carbon dioxide is one of the major contaminants in natural gas, reducing its energy content and becoming acidic and corrosive in the presence of water, damaging pipelines and equipment. In LNG processing plants CO2 can solidify, blocking the pipeline systems and causing transportation drawbacks [1]. In order to meet the pipeline quality standard specifications an upper limit for nitrogen and carbon dioxide of 4 and 2% is necessary, respectively. While, to inhibit the formation of dry ice in the liquefaction step, CO2 content must be reduced to 50 ppm level [2, 3]. Among the several separation technologies available for natural gas upgrade, such as chemical absorption, physical absorption, cryogenic distillation and membrane processes, adsorption processes are considered a competitive solution. Removal of carbon dioxide from natural gas for LNG production, can be carried out by cryogenic distillation using a multicolumn sequence to obtain a product stream with less than 50 ppm of CO2 [4]. Cryogenic adsorption-based processes, particularly pressure thermal swing adsorption, arise as a reliable and innovative alternative to replace the distillation columns, in particular the last one. Recycling of cellulases in lignocellulosic hydrolysates using alkaline elution

The recovery of cellulases from lignin, lignocellulosic hydrolysates and cellulose by alkaline washes at pH 9 and 10 was examined. The effect of the pH on the structural stability of purified Cel7A was analyzed by circular dichroism. Purified Cel7A showed conformational changes at pH 9 and 10 that were reversible at pH 4.8. Temperature influenced the enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw and may be critical for the efficiency of cellulase recycling from wheat straw hydrolysates. Operation at moderate temperatures (37 °C) resulted in a rate of saccharification 19% higher than that obtained at 50° C, improving cellulase recycling by 49%. Over 60% of the enzyme activity on the synthetic substrate 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-d-cellobioside (MUC) may be recovered by using a simple alkaline wash. This is thus a promising strategy for enzyme recycling that is simple to implement at industrial scale, economical and effective. The authors acknowledge funding through FP7 KACELLE (Kalundborg Cellulosic Ethanol) project for supporting his work. We also thank Dr. Mai Ostergaard Haven for critical reviewing of the manuscript and Dr. Jane Lindedam for supplying the lignin

Results of pars plana vitrectomy after complicated phacoemulsification surgery

Purpose: To identify the causes and outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) in patients undergoing phacoemulsification with intraoperative complication and to analyze whether the interval between phacoemulsification and PPV interferes with best-corrected final visual acuity. Methods: This descriptive and retrospective analytical study was conducted in Paraná Eye Hospital in 2013. Data were collected from medical records of 38 patients who underwent complicated phacoemulsification and also required PPV. Results: The most frequent complication as a result of phacoemulsification was posterior capsule rupture, observed in 35 patients (92.10%), followed by capsular bag detachment, in three patients (7.89%). Twenty-eight patients (73.68%) had cortical fragments that were removed during PPV. Twelve patients (31.57%) had their intraocular lens repositioned. PPV was performed on the same day of phacoemulsification in one patient (2.63%), within 1 week in 15 patients (39.47%), between 1 week and 1 month in 13 patients (34.21%), and 1 month after phacoemulsification in 9 patients (23.68%). Conclusion: This study is in agreement with worldwide literature, asserting that major complications of phacoemulsification are posterior capsule rupture and capsular bag detachment, and in addition, there is an improvement in the final visual acuity in almost half the cases, even when there are complications during modern cataract surgery, when complementary appropriate treatment is provided

Reproductive biology of Pseudotocinclus tietensis (Siluriformes: Loricariidae: Hypoptopomatinae), a threatened fish species

Pseudotocinclus tietensis is endemic to the Upper Tietê River basin and classified as vulnerable. The reproductive biology of this species is still unknown, therefore, we investigated its reproductive strategy and gonad development during its annual reproductive cycle. The fish were collected throughout one year, and histology of the gonads, fecundity and oocyte diameter was conducted. Three phases of gonad maturation were found in males and females (immature, developing, and spawning capable), and the development stages of the gametes were identified within each stage. In the testes, four stages of gamete development were distinguished: spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa. During spermiation, the spermatozoa were released into the tubular lumen and then continued through the efferent ducts. In the ovaries, five stages of gamete development were identified: chromatin nuclear, perinucleolar, yolk vesicle formation, vitellogenic and ripe. The minimum diameter of ovulating oocytes was 297 µm, and the absolute fecundity was 64 to 306 oocytes. Males with spermatozoa in the lobular lumen and females with vitellogenic and ripe oocytes were found throughout the year. Pseudotocinclus tietensis has asynchronous ovarian development and gametes with fertilization capacity can be eliminated throughout the annual cycle

Effects of the consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids on the oxidative status of adult dogs

The present study evaluated the alterations of the oxidative stress markers in adult dogs fed with high levels of PUFA from the mixture of soybean oil enriched with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and supplemented with a natural algae-based antioxidant (AOX). Twelve healthy adult (2 years old) Beagle dogs (6 males and 6 females, 11.20 ± 1.92 kg BW), were distributed in 2 completely randomized blocks design and fed with 4 experimental diets coated with 2 lipid sources: saturated (13% bovine tallow) or unsaturated (13% soybean oil enriched with DHA), supplemented or not with 500 mg of AOX for 4 wk, intercalated with a 4 wk adaptation period. Blood samples were collected on days 0, 15, and 30 of each block. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), sulfhydryl group (SH), protein carbonylation, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and total reactive antioxidant potential (TRAP) were evaluated in the serum, while GSH-Px, SOD, glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), SH, and TBARS were measured in erythrocytes. There was no significant difference in most of the oxidative markers evaluated. In contrast, GST activity in erythrocytes was greater in the animals that consumed the diets coated with bovine tallow compared to dogs that consumed diets coated with soybean oil enriched with DHA (P < 0.05). Serum from dogs fed on diets supplemented with AOX presented greater TRAP values (P < 0.05). These data demonstrate that the concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids used in the diets for dogs were not sufficient to cause large changes in the oxidative status. It was not possible to evaluate the efficiency of the natural antioxidant in maintaining the oxidative balance of the animals as it appears that the oxidative status of the dogs was not challenged by the unsaturated diets. Our findings also suggest that dogs, as descendants from carrion carnivores, may have some natural protection against oxidatio
