    Dynamical reentrance and geometry imposed quantization effects in Nb-AlOx-Nb Josephson junction arrays

    In this paper, we report on different phenomena related to the magnetic properties of artificially prepared highly ordered (periodic) two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays (2D-JJA) of both shunted and unshunted Nb-AlOx-Nb tunnel junctions. By employing mutual-inductance measurements and using a high-sensitive bridge, we have thoroughly investigated (both experimentally and theoretically) the temperature and magnetic field dependence of complex AC susceptibility of 2D-JJA. We also demonstrate the use of the scanning SQUID microscope for imaging the local flux distribution within our unshunted arrays

    Infrared phonon dynamics of multiferroic BiFeO3 single crystal

    We discuss the first infrared reflectivity measurement on a BiFeO3 single crystal between 5 K and room temperature. The 9 predicted ab-plane E phonon modes are fully and unambiguously determined. The frequencies of the 4 A1 c-axis phonons are found. These results settle issues between theory and data on ceramics. Our findings show that the softening of the lowest frequency E mode is responsible for the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant, indicating that the ferroelectric transition in BiFeO3 is soft-mode driven.Comment: 5 pages (figures included

    A Discussion Paper on Challenges and Proposals for Advanced Treatments for Potabilization of Wastewater in the Food Industry

    There are many studies and reviews on advanced processes to treat secondary wastewater from industries which also address the challenges and limitations to water reuse and the hygienic concerns especially in food industries. However, the challenges associated with treating a secondary wastewater to provide drinking water quality become clear when real wastewater is treated in batch and in pilot scale. The limitations are several, particularly in food industries. Hence, this review aims to present an overview and a discussion regarding the challenges and proposals related to the advanced treatment of food industry wastewater to provide drinking water quality, elucidating some experimental and theoretical questions surrounding such processes. Valuable experimental advice which is not usually found in research papers will be provided, for instance, which oxidation treatment should be chosen, which initial experiments should be carried, and which methodology should be followed to evaluate the kinetics constants in different situations will be provided, along with methodology issues

    2DPHOT: A Multi-purpose Environment for the Two-dimensional Analysis of Wide-field Images

    We describe 2DPHOT, a general purpose analysis environment for source detection and analysis in deep wide-field images. 2DPHOT is an automated tool to obtain both integrated and surface photometry of galaxies in an image, to perform reliable star-galaxy separation with accurate estimates of contamination at faint flux levels, and to estimate completeness of the image catalog. We describe the analysis strategy on which 2DPHOT is based, and provide a detailed description of the different algorithms implemented in the package. This new environment is intended as a dedicated tool to process the wealth of data from wide-field imaging surveys. To this end, the package is complemented by 2DGUI, an environment that allows multiple processing of data using a range of computing architectures.Comment: Accepted to PAS

    Magentically-Induced Lattice Distortions and Ferroelectricity in Magnetoelectric GdMnO3

    In this work we investigate the magnetic field dependence of Ag octahedra rotation (tilt) and B2g symmetric stretching modes frequency at different temperatures. Our field-dependent Raman investigation at 10K is interpreted by an ionic displacive nature of the magnetically induced ferroelectric phase transition. The frequency change of the Ag tilt is in agreement with the stabilization of the Mn-Gd spin arrangement, yielding the necessary conditions for the onset of ferroelectricity on the basis of the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The role of the Jahn-Teller cooperative interaction is also evidenced by the change of the B2g mode frequency at the ferroelectric phase transition. This frequency change allows estimating the shift of the oxygen position at the ferroelectric phase transition and the corresponding spontaneous polarization of 480 {\mu}C/m2, which agrees with earlier reported values in single crystals. Our study also confirms the existence of a large magnetic hysteresis at the lowest temperatures, which is a manifestation of magnetrostiction.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
