Rhythm contour drives musical memory
Two experiments examined listeners' use of contour information to drive memory for rhythmic patterns; these experiments were distinguished by the use of metric rhythms (Experiment 1) and ametric rhythms (Experiment 2). Both experiments employed a typical short-term memory task in which listeners heard a standard rhythm followed by a comparison rhythm. Comparison rhythms could be one of three types: an exact repetition of the standard rhythm, a same contour rhythm in which the relative durations of successive notes were comparable to the standard, and a different contour rhythm in which the relative durations of successive notes were modified relative to the standard. Analyses of d primes for same/different detection revealed that, for both studies, listeners performed better when the comparisons had different rhythm contours, relative to comparisons with the same rhythm contours. These findings converge with results investigating melodic contour, and suggest that listeners both form and use contours of novel rhythmic patterns
Neuroinflammatory processes in cognitive disorders:Is there a role for flavonoids and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in counteracting their detrimental effects?
Neuroinflammatory processes are known to contribute to the cascade of events culminating in the neuronal damage that underpins neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. With the ageing population and increased cases of neurodegenerative diseases, there is a crucial need for the development of new strategies capable to prevent, delay the onset or treat brain dysfunction and associated cognitive decline. Growing evidence sheds light on the use of dietary polyphenols and n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids to improve cognitive performances and reduce the neuroinflammatory and oxidative stress responses occurring with age and neurodegenerative pathologies. This review will summarise the most recent information related to the impact and mechanisms underlying the neuroinflammatory processes in neurodegenerative disorders. We will also detail the current evidence indicating that flavonoids and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are strong candidate in preventing neuroinflammation and modulating age-related memory decline, and will describe the potential mechanisms of action underlying their neuroprotective effects. As such, these dietary bioactives represent important precursor molecules in the quest to develop of a new generation of drugs capable of counteracting neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases
Examining techniques for measuring the effects of nutrients on mental performance and mood state
Purpose: Intake of specific nutrients has been linked to mental states and various indices of cognitive performance although the effects are often subtle and difficult to interpret. Measurement of so-called objective variables (e.g. reaction times) is often considered to be the gold standard for assessing outcomes in this field of research. It can, however, be argued that data on subjective experience (e.g. mood) are also important and may enrich existing objective data. The aim of this review is to evaluate methods for measuring mental performance and mood, considering the definition of subjective mood and the validity of measures of subjective experience. Methods: A multi-stakeholder expert group was invited by ILSI Europe to come to a consensus around the utility of objective and subjective measurement in this field, which forms the basis of the paper. Therefore, the present review reflects a succinct overview of the science but is not intended to be a systematic review. Results: The proposed approach extends the traditional methodology using standard ‘objective’ measurements to also include the consumers’ subjective experiences in relation to food. Specific recommendations include 1) using contemporary methods to capture transient mood states; 2) using sufficiently sensitive measures to capture effects of nutritional intervention; 3) considering the possibility that subjective and objective responses will occur over different time frames; and 4) recognition of the importance of expectancy and placebo effects for subjective measures. Conclusions: The consensus reached was that the most informative approach should involve collection and consideration of both objective and subjective data
N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid and neuroinflammation in aging and Alzheimer's disease
The innate immune system of the brain is mainly composed of microglial cells, which play a key role in the maintenance of synapses and the protection of neurons against noxious agents or lesions owing to their phagocytic activity. In the healthy brain, microglia are highly motile and strongly interact with neurons either by physical contact, induction of oxidative stress or through specific mediators, such as chemokines and cytokines. In response to inflammatory insult however, microglial cells get activated and produce inflammatory cytokines. The action of cytokines on specific receptors expressed in the brain triggers the development of sickness behavior and altered cognitive and emotional processes. The effects are acute and reversible as normal behavior is restored once the synthesis of inflammatory brain cytokines returns to baseline after a few hours. However, in pathological situations, these cytokines may reach toxic levels and have irreversible consequences such as neuronal death, as observed in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are essential nutrients and fundamental components of neuronal and glial cell membranes. They accumulate in the brain during the perinatal period in a dietary supply-dependent fashion. Their brain levels may diminish with age, but can be increased by diets enriched in n-3 PUFAs. Changes in the immune profile have been associated with n-3 PUFAs intake in humans and animal models. Therefore, the increasing exposure of the population to diets low in n-3 PUFAs could contribute to the deleterious effects of the chronic activation of microglia in the brain

Docosahexaenoic acid prevents lipopolysaccharide-induced cytokine production in microglial cells by inhibiting lipopolysaccharide receptor presentation but not its membrane subdomain localization
International audienceRecognition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the endotoxin of gram-negative bacteria, by microglia occurs through its binding to specific receptors, cluster of differentiation 14 and toll-like receptor-4. LPS binding to these receptors triggers the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines that coordinate the brain innate immune response to protect the CNS of the infection. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid highly incorporated in the brain, is a potent immunomodulator. In this study, we investigated whether DHA modulates LPS receptor localization and, as a consequence, LPS-induced signaling pathway and proinflammatory cytokine production. We demonstrated that DHA, when added exogenously, is specifically enriched in membrane phospholipids, but not in raft lipids of microglial cells. DHA incorporation in membrane impaired surface presentation of LPS receptors cluster of differentiation 14 and toll-like receptor-4, but not their membrane subdomain localization. LPS-induced nuclear factor kappa B activation was inhibited by DHA, hence, LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokine synthesis of interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor α was strongly attenuated. We suggest that DHA is highly anti-inflammatory by targeting LPS receptor surface location, therefore reducing LPS action on microglia. This effect represents a new insight by which DHA modulates in the brain the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in response to bacterial product
