Circular Polarization of Circumstellar Water Masers around S Per

    Get PDF
We present the first circular polarization measurements of circumstellar H2O masers. Previously the magnetic field in circumstellar envelopes has been estimated using polarization observations of SiO and OH masers. SiO masers are probes of the high temperature and density regime close to the central star. OH masers are found at much lower densities and temperatures, generally much further out in the circumstellar envelope. The detection of the circular polarization of the (6_16 - 5_23) rotational transition of the H2O maser could be attributed to Zeeman splitting due to the magnetic field in the intermediate temperature and density regime. The fields inferred here agree well with predicted values for a combination of the r^{-2} dependence of a solar-type magnetic field, and the coupling of the field to the high density masing regions. We also discuss the unexpected narrowing of the circular polarization spectrum.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letter

Selection of noise level in strategy adoption for spatial social dilemmas

We studied spatial Prisoner's Dilemma and Stag Hunt games where both the strategy distribution and the players' individual noise level could evolve to reach higher individual payoff. Players are located on the sites of different two-dimensional lattices and gain their payoff from games with their neighbors by choosing unconditional cooperation or defection. The way of strategy adoption can be characterized by a single KK (temperature-like) parameter describing how strongly adoptions depend on the payoff-difference. If we start the system from a random strategy distribution with many different player specific KK parameters, the simultaneous evolution of strategies and KK parameters drives the system to a final stationary state where only one KK value remains. In the coexistence phase of cooperator and defector strategies the surviving KK parameter is in good agreement with the noise level that ensures the highest cooperation level if uniform KK is supposed for all players. In this paper we give a thorough overview about the properties of this evolutionary process.Comment: 10 two-column pages, 10 figures; accepted for publication in Physical Review

Sun-Sized Water Vapor Masers in Cepheus A

We present the first VLBI observations of a Galactic water maser (in Chepeus A) made with a very long baseline interferometric array involving the RadioAstron Earth-orbiting satellite station as one of its elements. We detected two distinct components at -16.9 and 0.6 km/s with a fringe spacing of 66 microarcseconds. In total power, the 0.6 km/s component appears to be a single Gaussian component of strength 580 Jy and width of 0.7 km/s. Single-telescope monitoring showed that its lifetime was only 8~months. The absence of a Zeeman pattern implies the longitudinal magnetic field component is weaker than 120 mG. The space-Earth cross power spectrum shows two unresolved components smaller than 15 microarcseconds, corresponding to a linear scale of 1.6 x 10^11 cm, about the diameter of the Sun, for a distance of 700 pc, separated by 0.54 km/s in velocity and by 160 +/-35 microarcseconds in angle. This is the smallest angular structure ever observed in a Galactic maser. The brightness temperatures are greater than 2 x 10^14K, and the line widths are 0.5 km/s. Most of the flux (about 87%) is contained in a halo of angular size of 400 +/- 150 microarcseconds. This structure is associated with the compact HII region HW3diii. We have probably picked up the most prominent peaks in the angular size range of our interferometer. We discuss three dynamical models: (1) Keplerian motion around a central object, (2) two chance overlapping clouds, and (3) vortices caused by flow around an obstacle (i.e., von Karman vortex street) with Strouhal number of about~0.3.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. Sex and the Cinema: What American Pie Teaches the Young

This paper focuses upon the wildly successful blockbuster American Pie teenpics, especially American Pie 3 – the Wedding. I argue that these films, which are sited so securely within the visual and pedagogical machinery of Hollywood culture, are specifically designed to appeal to teenage male audiences, and to provide lessons in sex and romance. Movies like this are especially important as they are experienced by far more teenagers than, for example, instructional films or other classroom materials; indeed, as Henry Giroux has observed, "teens and youth learn how to define themselves outside of the traditional sites of instruction, such as the home and the school… Learning in the postmodern age is located elsewhere – in popular spheres that shape their identities, through forms of knowledge and desires that appear absent from what is taught in schools" (Giroux, 1997, p.49). In this paper I discuss whether the American Pie series is actually a "new age" effort which, via insubordinate performances of gender, contests the hegemonic field of signification which regulates the production of sex, gender and desire, or whether it is more accurately described as a retrogressive hetero-conservative opus with a veneer of sexual radicalism. In short, I intend to probe whether this filmic vector for sex education is all about the shaping of responsible, caring, vulnerable men, or is it guiding them to become just like their heterosexual, middle-class fathers? And whether, despite its riotous and raunchy advertising, American Pie really dishes up something spicy or something terribly wholesome instead

Spatio-temporal Bounded Noises, and transitions induced by them in solutions of real Ginzburg-Landau model

In this work, we introduce two spatio-temporal colored bounded noises, based on the zero-dimensional Cai-Lin and Tsallis-Borland noises. We then study and characterize the dependence of the defined bounded noises on both a temporal correlation parameter τ\tau and on a spatial coupling parameter λ\lambda. The boundedness of these noises has some consequences on their equilibrium distributions. Indeed in some cases varying λ\lambda may induce a transition of the distribution of the noise from bimodality to unimodality. With the aim to study the role played by bounded noises on nonlinear dynamical systems, we investigate the behavior of the real Ginzburg-Landau time-varying model additively perturbed by such noises. The observed phase transitions phenomenology is quite different from the one observed when the perturbations are unbounded. In particular, we observed an inverse "order-to-disorder" transition, and a re-entrant transition, with dependence on the specific type of bounded noise.Comment: 12 (main text)+5 (supplementary) page

Circular Polarization of Water Masers in the Circumstellar Envelopes of Late Type Stars

We present circular polarization measurements of circumstellar H_2O masers. The circular polarization detected in the (6_{16}-5_{23}) rotational transition of the H_{2}O maser can be attributed to Zeeman splitting in the intermediate temperature and density regime. The magnetic fields are derived using a general, LTE Zeeman analysis as well as a full radiative transfer method (non-LTE), which includes a treatment of all hyperfine components simultaneously as well as the effects of saturation and unequal populations of the magnetic substates. The differences and relevances of these interpretations are discussed extensively. The field strengths are compared with previous detections of the magnetic field on the SiO and OH masers. We show that the magnetic pressure dominates the thermal pressure by a factor of 20 or more.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures; accepted for publication in A&A; (Abstract Abridged

Properties of Stationary Nonequilibrium States in the Thermostatted Periodic Lorentz Gas II: The many point particles system

We study the stationary nonequilibrium states of N point particles moving under the influence of an electric field E among fixed obstacles (discs) in a two dimensional torus. The total kinetic energy of the system is kept constant through a Gaussian thermostat which produces a velocity dependent mean field interaction between the particles. The current and the particle distribution functions are obtained numerically and compared for small E with analytic solutions of a Boltzmann type equation obtained by treating the collisions with the obstacles as random independent scatterings. The agreement is surprisingly good for both small and large N. The latter system in turn agrees with a self consistent one particle evolution expected to hold in the limit of N going to infinity.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

Evidence of changes in regional blood perfusion in human intracranial tumours during conductive interstitial hyperthermia

    Get PDF
Human intracranial tumours were treated using local heat therapy produced by surgically implanted catheters containing local resistive heating elements. Changes in local tumor blood flow were assessed indirectly from an algorithm based on the bioheat transfer equation. The algorithm used the ratio of catheter power to catheter temperature rise to estimate regional blood perfusion. Local heat therapy produced consistent reductions in local apparent perfusion. Changes in apparent regional perfusion occurred in intriguing patterns that gave clues to possible vascular events of therapeutic significance

Optical Properties of Radio-selected Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

We present results from the analysis of the optical spectra of 47 radio-selected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). These objects are a subset of the First Bright Quasar Survey (FBQS) and were initially detected at 20 cm (flux density limit ~1 mJy) in the VLA FIRST Survey. We run Spearman rank correlation tests on several sets of parameters and conclude that, except for their radio properties, radio-selected NLS1 galaxies do not exhibit significant differences from traditional NLS1 galaxies. Our results are also in agreement with previous studies suggesting that NLS1 galaxies have small black hole masses that are accreting very close to the Eddington rate. We have found 16 new radio-loud NLS1 galaxies, which increases the number of known radio-loud NLS1 galaxies by a factor of ~5.Comment: 18 pages, 20 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap

Effective Estimation and Computer Control of Minimum Tumour Temperature During Conductive Interstitial Hyperthermia

    Get PDF
The goal of heat therapy in the treatment of malignant disease is to raise the temperature of all neoplastic tissue to a cytotoxic temperature for a predetermined period of time. This seemingly simple task has proved difficult in-vivo, in part because of nonuniform power absorption and in part because of nonhomogeneous and time varying tumour blood flow. We have addressed this difficulty first by utilizing the conceptually simple technique of conductive interstitial hyperthermia, in which the tumour is warmed by multiple, electrically heated catheters, and second by implementing on-line conu·ol of minimum tumour temperatures near each catheter, estimated on the basis of the steadystate ratio of catheter power to catheter temperature rise. This report presents an analysis of the accuracy, precision, and stability of the on-line minimum temperature estimation/conu·ol technique for 22 patients who received 31 separate courses of conductive interstitial hyperthermia for the treatment of malignant brain tumours, and in whom temperature was monitored independently by 12 to 16 independent sensors per patient. In all patients, the technique was found to accurately and precisely estimate and control the local minimum temperatures. Comparison of measured and estimated temperatures revealed a mean difference of 0.0 ±0.4 °C for those sensors within 1.0 mm of the expected location for minimum temperatures. This technique, therefore, offers an attractive method for controlling hyperthermia therapy -- even in the presence of time varying local blood flow
