La respuesta al problema de la medida de figuras planas en los antiguos griegos
El problema de la cuadratura del cĂrculo ha sido de gran importancia a travĂ©s de la historia, pues constituye un elemento movilizador de algunas ramas de la matemática como la GeometrĂa AnalĂtica, el Cálculo y el Análisis. Euclides de AlejandrĂa (aprox. 300 a.C.) en su monumental obra Elementos da una respuesta parcial al problema, estableciendo un proceso para la cuadratura de figuras rectilĂneas y deja implĂcito el proceso que posteriormente será el eje central de la medida. Estos resultados son retomados por ArquĂmedes para la cuadratura de figuras que no son rectilĂneas. En el presente escrito se intenta abordar estos resultados de Euclides y su relaciĂłn con los resultados de ArquĂmedes al problema de medir, uno de los ejes centrales en el desarrollo de las Matemáticas
Managing writing systems using orthography profiles
This text is a practical guide for linguists, and programmers, who work with data in multilingual computational environments. We introduce the basic concepts needed to understand how writing systems and character encodings function, and how they work together at the intersection between the Unicode Standard and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Although these standards are often met with frustration by users, they nevertheless provide language researchers and programmers with a consistent computational architecture needed to process, publish and analyze lexical data from the world's languages. Thus we bring to light common, but not always transparent, pitfalls which researchers face when working with Unicode and IPA. Having identified and overcome these pitfalls involved in making writing systems and character encodings syntactically and semantically interoperable (to the extent that they can be), we created a suite of open-source Python and R tools to work with languages using orthography profiles that describe author- or document-specific orthographic conventions. In this cookbook we describe a formal specification of orthography profiles and provide recipes using open source tools to show how users can segment text, analyze it, identify errors, and to transform it into different written forms for comparative linguistics research
Investigating the Relatedness of the Endangered Dogon Languages
In this article we apply up-to-date methods of quantitative language comparison, inspired by algorithms successfully applied in bioinformatics to decode DNA and determine the genetic relatedness of humans, to language data in an attempt to shed light on the current situation of a family of languages called Dogon, which are spoken in Mali, West Africa. Our aim is to determine the linguistic subgroupings of these languages, which we believe will shed light on their prehistory, highlight the linguistic diversity of these groups and which may ultimately inform studies on the cultural boundaries of these languages
