Health indicators

This paper examines the more general background to health indicators. It deals with the relation between health and social indicators, before examining the health concept. It discusses possible purposes for which health indicators should be developed, and gives some of the important data sources for this exercise. The paper contains some less traditional examples of health indicators as mainly applied in The Netherlands. Finally, it draws conclusions on the possibilities of developing health indicators.

Het TSG besteedt aandacht aan vele aspecten van de publieke gezondheid. Daarbij ligt de nadruk sterk op onderzoeksresultaten. Maar we weten dat er – naast ‘evidence based practice’ waarvoor deze resultaten een basis vormen – grote behoefte is aan ‘practice based evidence’. Daarover is in het TSG geleidelijk steeds meer te lezen. In dit nummer staat gezondheidsbevordering (GB) centraal, een werkgebied dat volop in ontwikkeling is en waarvan men veel verwachtingen heeft, maar vaak teleurgesteld is over de waargenomen resultaten.
