    Aerosol characteristics at a remote island: minicoy in southern Arabian sea

    Extensive measurements of aerosol optical and microphysical properties made at a remote island, Minicoy in southern Arabian Sea for the period (February 2006-March 2007) are used to characterize their temporal variability and Black Carbon (BC) mass mixing ratio. Large decrease in aerosol BC (from ~800 ng m-3 to ~100 ng m-3) was observed associated with change in airmass characteristics and monsoon rains. The total aerosol mass varied between ~80 and 20 μg m-3. Though the total mass fell drastically, a slight increase in super micron mass was observed during the June-August period associated with high winds. The mass fraction of Black Carbon aerosols during the prevalence of continental airmass is found to be ~1.2% of the composite aerosols, which is much lower than the values reported earlier for this region

    FUEL bundles for Rajasthan Atomic Power Reactor, as per the design, consist of a cluster of 19 elements held together by zircaloy end plates and spaced by wire helices on the six elements of the inner ring and alte-rnate elements of the outer ring. Each element is a zircaloy-2 tube 495 min long,1524 mm in diameter and of 0.4 nom wall thickness containing the nuclear fuel in the form of sintered uranium dioxide pellets and sealed at both ends. In order to provide the required spacing between the elements, zircaloy wire of 1.25 mm dia. is spot-welded around the elements in the helix form. The wire helices serve to separate the elements to maintain the dimensions of the coolant sub-channels between them and to increase the mixing of coolant between inner and outer sub-channels. Zircaloy wire of 1.63 mm dia. is spot-welded on the outer elements so as to provide bearing surfaces for the bundle when it moves through the fuel channels in the coolant assemblies

    Numerical Simulations of a High-Resolution RANS-FVDM Scheme for the Design of a Gas Turbine Centrifugal Compressor

    The aero-thermodynamic design and performance of a compressor need to conquer many vital challenges like it is a gas-driven turbo-machinery component, involvement of extensive iterative process for the convergence of the design, enormous design complexity due to three-dimensional flow phenomena, and multiflow physics embedded within a dynamic state-of-the-art. In this chapter, a strong attempt is made to address the above-cited technical issues to achieve an optimized design and performance of a centrifugal compressor with backward swept blade profile producing total pressure ratio of 5.4 with an ingested mass flow rate of 5.73 kg/s. A mean-line design methodology was implemented to configure sizing of the compressor. An optimum grid size was well validated by carrying out computational analysis with three different mesh sizes within the same framework. Finally, a detailed three-dimensional numerical simulation was performed using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations based on finite volume discretization method (RANS-FVDM) scheme. Consequently, the polytropic efficiency, total-to-total efficiency, stagnation pressure ratio at a fixed rotational speed, and the overall design and aero-thermodynamic performance of the centrifugal compressor are validated

    Tropical convective cloud characterization using ground-based microwave radiometric observations

    Characterization of the microphysical and thermodynamical properties of convective events over the tropical coastal station Thiruvananthapuram (TVM) has been carried out based on multiyear microwave radiometer profiler observations. The analyses have been extended to develop a methodology to identify convective events, which is based on the radiometric brightness temperature (Tb) difference threshold, at 30 and 22.23 GHz channels, and the results are compared with reflectivity and rainfall intensity deduced from concurrent and collocated disdrometer measurements. Eighty-four of such convections were identified using the aforementioned methodology over the station during 2010-2013, i.e., both for pre- and post-Indian summer monsoon months, and further evaluated by computing their stability indexes.     Impact of diesel vehicular emissions on ambient black carbon concentration at an urban location in India

    Vehicular emissions in the urban areas are known to contribute significantly to aerosol black carbon (BC) loading to the atmosphere. Quantification of BC emissions is important from the climate research point of view, as the BC aerosols strongly absorb solar radiation. A case study has been carried out in an urban area, Hyderabad, to assess the impact of emissions associated with truck transport on ambient BC concentration. The study was carried out during the recent nationwide truck strike of April 2003. The results indicate a significant reduction in the BC loading associated with withdrawal of the trucks. The decrease was gradual, while the recovery was almost immediate

    Characteristics of spectral aerosol optical depths over India during ICARB

    Spectral aerosol optical depth (AOD) measurements, carried out regularly from a network of observatories spread over the Indian mainland and adjoining islands in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, are used to examine the spatio-temporal and spectral variations during the period of ICARB (March to May 2006). The AODs and the derived Angstrom parameters showed considerable variations across India during the above period. While at the southern peninsular stations the AODs decreased towards May after a peak in April, in the north Indian regions they increased continuously from March to May. The Angstrom coefficients suggested enhanced coarse mode loading in the north Indian regions, compared to southern India. Nevertheless, as months progressed from March to May, the dominance of coarse mode aerosols increased in the columnar aerosol size spectrum over the entire Indian mainland, maintaining the regional distinctiveness. Compared to the above, the island stations showed considerably low AODs, so too the northeastern station Dibrugarh, indicating the prevalence of cleaner environment. Long-range transport of aerosols from the adjoining regions leads to remarkable changes in the magnitude of the AODs and their wavelength dependencies during March to May. HYSPLIT back-trajectory analysis shows that enhanced long-range transport of aerosols, particularly from the west Asia and northwest coastal India, contributed significantly to the enhancement of AOD and in the flattening of the spectra over entire regions; if it is the peninsular regions and the island Minicoy are more impacted in April, the north Indian regions including the Indo Gangetic Plain get affected the most during May, with the AODs soaring as high as 1.0 at 500 nm. Over the islands, the Angstrom exponent (α) remained significantly lower (~1) over the Arabian Sea compared to Bay of Bengal (BoB) (~1.4) as revealed by the data respectively from Minicoy and Port Blair. Occurrences of higher values of α, showing dominance of accumulation mode aerosols, over BoB are associated well with the advection, above the boundary layer, of fine particles from the east Asian region during March and April. The change in the airmass to marine in May results in a rapid decrease in α over the BoB

    Lidar Observations of aerosol layers just below the tropopause level during IFP-INDOEX

    A lidar system has been used at Gadanki (13.5º, 79.2ºE) to study the characteristics of aerosol layer (cloud) occurring just below the tropical tropopause. The preliminary results of the lidar observations indicate that the cloud occurs ~ 2 km below the tropopause. The top and bottom edges of the cloud have propensity for ice crystal presence with liquid droplets/ vapours in-between. The clouds show temporal fluctuations (in their backscattering ratio) with temporal scales of the order of 30–90 min
