    Multiple source direction of arrival estimation using subspace pseudointensity vectors

    The recently proposed subspace pseudointensity method for direction of arrival estimation is applied in the context of Tasks 1 and 2 of the LOCATA Challenge using the Eigenmike recordings. Specific implementation details are described and results reported for the development dataset, for which the ground truth source directions are available.     The NHS Executive and Department of Health have proposed a wide range of performance indicators many of which are applicable to future primary care groups Some of these indicators reflect access and efficiency, but few of the effectiveness indicators are based on primary care interventions for which there is evidence that increased uptake results in improved health outcomes We present a method to identify important primary care interventions of proved efficacy and suggest performance indicators that could monitor their use Our evidence based approach may be a complementary way of identifying areas for performance indicators to those proposed by the NHS Executive and Department of Health Our suggested indicators are more likely to help turn evidence into everyday practice and to have an impact on the population's healt

    The previous Commonwealth Minister for the Environment, Mr Garrett, recently rejected a request to allow the importation of live bumblebees (Bombus terrestris L.) to mainland Australia. New South Wales and Victoria had already listed the introduction of bumblebees as, respectively, a key threatening process and a potentially threatening process. The Commonwealth, however, had previously declined an application to list the introduction of bumblebees as a key threatening process, although its Threatened Species Scientific Committee urged ‘that extreme caution be shown in considering any proposal to introduce this species to the mainland.’ The potential threat from bumblebees would appear to beg the questions posed by the precautionary principle. Would the presence of bumblebees to mainland Australia pose a threat of serious or irreversible environmental damage? Should a lack of full scientific certainty be used as a reason for postponing measures to prevent environmental degradation? This paper considers the role of the precautionary principle in regulatory approaches to the bumblebee. It seeks to establish the application of the precautionary principle to this particular potential environmental threat, including its relationship to the principle of conservation of biological diversity. It concludes that, despite widespread adoption of the precautionary principle in policy, legislation and case law in Australia, its impact on regulating bumblebees has not been consistent

    Fantastically Ordered Prompts and Where to Find Them: Overcoming Few-Shot Prompt Order Sensitivity

    When primed with only a handful of training samples, very large, pretrained language models such as GPT-3 have shown competitive results when compared to fully-supervised, fine-tuned, large, pretrained language models. We demonstrate that the order in which the samples are provided can make the difference between near state-of-the-art and random guess performance: essentially some permutations are “fantastic” and some not. We analyse this phenomenon in detail, establishing that: it is present across model sizes (even for the largest current models), it is not related to a specific subset of samples, and that a given good permutation for one model is not transferable to another. While one could use a development set to determine which permutations are performant, this would deviate from the true few-shot setting as it requires additional annotated data. Instead, we use the generative nature of language models to construct an artificial development set and based on entropy statistics of the candidate permutations on this set, we identify performant prompts. Our method yields a 13% relative improvement for GPT-family models across eleven different established text classification tasks

    Parenclitic network mapping identifies response to targeted albumin therapy in patients hospitalized with decompensated cirrhosis

    BACKGROUND: The efficacy of targeted albumin therapy in the management of decompensatory events in cirrhosis is unclear with different reports showing conflicting results. It is possible that only certain subgroups of patients may benefit from targeted albumin administration. However, extensive conventional subgroup analyses have not yet identified these subgroups. Albumin is an important regulator of physiological networks and may interact with homeostatic mechanism differently in patients according to the integrity of their physiological network. In the present study we aimed to assess the value of network mapping in predicting response to targeted albumin therapy in patients with cirrhosis. METHOD: This is a sub-study of the ATTIRE trial; a multicentre, randomized trial conducted to assess the effect of targeted albumin therapy in cirrhosis. Baseline serum bilirubin, albumin, sodium, creatinine, CRP, and white cell count (WCC), international normalised ratio, heart rate, and blood pressure of 777 patients followed up for 6 months were used for network mapping using parenclitic analysis. Parenclitic network analysis involves measuring the deviation of each individual patient from the existing network of physiological interactions in a reference population. RESULT: Overall network connectivity as well as deviations along WCC-CRP axis predicted 6-month survival independent of age and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) in the standard care arm. Patients with lower deviation along the WCC-CRP axis showed lower survival in response to targeted albumin administration over 6-month follow-up period. Likewise, patients with higher overall physiological connectivity survived significantly less than the standard care group following targeted albumin infusion. CONCLUSION: The parenclitic network mapping can predict survival of patients with cirrhosis and identify patient subgroups that don't benefit from targeted albumin therapy
