Spontaneous creation of non-zero angular momentum modes in tunnel-coupled two-dimensional degenerate Bose gases
We investigate the dynamics of two tunnel-coupled two-dimensional degenerate
Bose gases. The reduced dimensionality of the clouds enables us to excite
specific angular momentum modes by tuning the coupling strength, thereby
creating striking patterns in the atom density profile. The extreme sensitivity
of the system to the coupling and initial phase difference results in a rich
variety of subsequent dynamics, including vortex production, complex
oscillations in relative atom number and chiral symmetry breaking due to
counter-rotation of the two clouds.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Seasat data utilization project
During the three months of orbital operations, the satellite returned data from the world's oceans. Dozens of tropical storms, hurricanes and typhoons were observed, and two planned major intensive surface truth experiments were conducted. The utility of the Seasat-A microwave sensors as oceanographic tools was determined. Sensor and geophysical evaluations are discussed, including surface observations, and evaluation summaries of an altimeter, a scatterometer, a scanning multichannel microwave radiometer, a synthetic aperture radar, and a visible and infrared radiometer
Predicting Post-Deployment Family Adaptation in U.S. Navy Families
Background: Although military families worldwide face changes that include adapting to peace and wartime deployments, few studies have explored how military families adapt to the post-deployment return of a service member.
Objectives: To identify variables that predicted post-deployment adaptation of U.S. Navy families.
Methods: A mixed method study guided by the Roy Adaptation Model included a convenience sample of 142 spouses of service members recently returned from deployment. The degree to which length of deployment, prior deployments, and years married, number of children, participation in religious and family support groups, communication, race, and interdependence predicted post-deployment family adaptation was tested. Multiple regression analysis and content analysis were used to analyze quantitative and qualitative data to better understand post- deployment adaptation of military families.
Results: Post-deployment family adaptation was significantly predicted by having been previously deployed and by scores measuring family interdependence. Content analysis of qualitative responses from 10 spouses indicated that 90% experienced integrated adaptive responses.
Conclusions: Family interdependence and prior deployments predicted levels of post-deployment family adaptation. Families who give time to adjust, communicate, and resume family routines experienced levels of adaptive response
Discovery of pulsations, including possible pressure modes, in two new extremely low mass, He-core white dwarfs
We report the discovery of the second and third pulsating extremely low mass
white dwarfs (WDs), SDSS J111215.82+111745.0 (hereafter J1112) and SDSS
J151826.68+065813.2 (hereafter J1518). Both have masses < 0.25 Msun and
effective temperatures below 10,000 K, establishing these putatively He-core
WDs as a cooler class of pulsating hydrogen-atmosphere WDs (DAVs, or ZZ Ceti
stars). The short-period pulsations evidenced in the light curve of J1112 may
also represent the first observation of acoustic (p-mode) pulsations in any WD,
which provide an exciting opportunity to probe this WD in a complimentary way
compared to the long-period g-modes also present. J1112 is a Teff = 9590 +/-
140 K and log(g) = 6.36 +/- 0.06 WD. The star displays sinusoidal variability
at five distinct periodicities between 1792-2855 s. In this star we also see
short-period variability, strongest at 134.3 s, well short of expected g-modes
for such a low-mass WD. The other new pulsating WD, J1518, is a Teff = 9900 +/-
140 K and log(g) = 6.80 +/- 0.05 WD. The light curve of J1518 is highly
non-sinusoidal, with at least seven significant periods between 1335-3848 s.
Consistent with the expectation that ELM WDs must be formed in binaries, these
two new pulsating He-core WDs, in addition to the prototype SDSS
J184037.78+642312.3, have close companions. However, the observed variability
is inconsistent with tidally induced pulsations and is so far best explained by
the same hydrogen partial-ionization driving mechanism at work in classic

Zone-plate focusing of Bose-Einstein condensates for atom optics and erasable high-speed lithography of quantum electronic components
We show that Fresnel zone plates, fabricated in a solid surface, can sharply
focus atomic Bose-Einstein condensates that quantum reflect from the surface or
pass through the etched holes. The focusing process compresses the condensate
by orders of magnitude despite inter-atomic repulsion. Crucially, the focusing
dynamics are insensitive to quantum fluctuations of the atom cloud and largely
preserve the condensates' coherence, suggesting applications in passive
atom-optical elements, for example zone plate lenses that focus atomic matter
waves and light at the same point to strengthen their interaction. We explore
transmission zone-plate focusing of alkali atoms as a route to erasable and
scalable lithography of quantum electronic components in two-dimensional
electron gases embedded in semiconductor nanostructures. To do this, we
calculate the density profile of a two-dimensional electron gas immediately
below a patch of alkali atoms deposited on the surface of the nanostructure by
zone-plate focusing. Our results reveal that surface-induced polarization of
only a few thousand adsorbed atoms can locally deplete the electron gas. We
show that, as a result, the focused deposition of alkali atoms by existing zone
plates can create quantum electronic components on the 50 nm scale, comparable
to that attainable by ion beam implantation but with minimal damage to either
the nanostructure or electron gas.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
The spin temperature and 21cm brightness of the intergalactic medium in the pre-reionization era
We use numerical hydrodynamical simulations of early structure formation in a
LCDM universe to investigate the spin temperature and 21cm brightness of the
diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) prior to the epoch of cosmic reionization,
at z<20. In the absence of any radiative heating, collisions between neutral
hydrogen atoms can efficiently decouple the spin temperature from the CMB only
in dense minihalos and filaments. Shock heated gas shines in emission,
surrounded by cooler gas visible in absorption. In the case of a warm, mostly
neutral IGM, produced here by X-ray emission from an early miniquasar, the 21cm
signal is strongly enhanced. Even slightly overdense filaments now shine in
emission against the CMB, possibly allowing future radio arrays to probe the

The association of genetic predisposition to depressive symptoms with non-suicidal and suicidal self-Injuries
Non-suicidal and suicidal self-injury are very destructive, yet surprisingly common behaviours. Depressed mood is a major risk factor for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. We conducted a genetic risk prediction study to examine the polygenic overlap of depressive symptoms with lifetime NSSI, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts in a sample of 6237 Australian adult twins and their family members (3740 females, mean age\ua0=\ua042.4\ua0years). Polygenic risk scores for depressive symptoms significantly predicted suicidal ideation, and some predictive ability was found for suicide attempts; the polygenic risk scores explained a significant amount of variance in suicidal ideation (lowest p\ua0=\ua00.008, explained variance ranging from 0.10 to 0.16\ua0%) and, less consistently, in suicide attempts (lowest p\ua0=\ua00.04, explained variance ranging from 0.12 to 0.23\ua0%). Polygenic risk scores did not significantly predict NSSI. Results highlight that individuals genetically predisposed to depression are also more likely to experience suicidal ideation/behaviour, whereas we found no evidence that this is also the case for NSSI
Schoolgirls’ experience and appraisal of menstrual absorbents in rural Uganda: a cross-sectional evaluation of reusable sanitary pads
BACKGROUND:
Governments, multinational organisations, and charities have commenced the distribution of sanitary products to address current deficits in girls’ menstrual management. The few effectiveness studies conducted have focused on health and education outcomes but have failed to provide quantitative assessment of girls’ preferences, experiences of absorbents, and comfort. Objectives of the study were, first, to quantitatively describe girls’ experiences with, and ratings of reliability and acceptability of different menstrual absorbents. Second, to compare ratings of freely-provided reusable pads (AFRIpads) to other existing methods of menstrual management. Finally, to assess differences in self-reported freedom of activity during menses according to menstrual absorbent.
// METHODS:
Cross-sectional, secondary analysis of data from the final survey of a controlled trial of reusable sanitary padand puberty education provision was undertaken. Participants were 205 menstruating schoolgirls from eight schools in rural Uganda. 72 girls who reported using the intervention-provided reusable pads were compared to those using existing improvised methods (predominately new or old cloth).
// RESULTS:
Schoolgirls using reusable pads provided significantly higher ratings of perceived absorbent reliability across activities, less difficulties changing absorbents, and less disgust with cleaning absorbents. There were no significant differences in reports of outside garment soiling (OR 1.00 95%CI 0.51–1.99), or odour (0.84 95%CI 0.40–1.74) during the last menstrual period. When girls were asked if menstruation caused them to miss daily activities there were no differences between those using reusable pads and those using other existing methods. However, when asked about activities avoided during menstruation, those using reusable pads participated less in physical sports, working in the field, fetching water, and cooking.
// CONCLUSIONS:
Reusable pads were rated favourably. This translated into some benefits for self-reported involvement in daily activities, although reports of actual soiling and missing activities due to menstruation did not differ. More research is needed comparing the impact of menstrual absorbents on girls’ daily activities, and validating outcome measures for menstrual management research
Solar-electric-propulsion cargo vehicles for split/sprint Mars mission
In support of the proposed exploration of Mars, an unmanned cargo ferry SEMM1 (Solar Electric Mars Mission) was designed. The vehicle is based on solar electric propulsion, and required to transport a cargo of 61,000 kg. The trajectory is a combination of spirals; first, out from LEO, then around the sun, then spiral down to low Mars orbit. The spacecraft produces 3.03 MWe power using photovoltaic flexible blanket arrays. Ion thrusters using argon as a propellant were selected to drive the ship, providing about 60 Newtons of thrust in low Earth orbit. The configuration is based on two long truss beams to which the 24 individual, self-deployable, solar arrays are attached. The main body module supports the two beams and houses the computers, electrical, and control equipment. The thruster module is attached to the rear of the main body, and the cargo to the front
Planarians in pharmacology: parthenolide is a specific behavioral antagonist of cocaine in the planarian Girardia tigrina
Planarians are traditional animal models in developmental and regeneration biology. Recently, these organisms are arising as vertebrate-relevant animal models in neuropharmacology. Using an adaptation of published behavioral protocols, we have described the alleviation of cocaine-induced planarian seizure-like movements (pSLM) by a naturally-occurring sesquiterpene lactone, parthenolide. Interestingly, parthenolide does not prevent the expression of pSLM induced by amphetamines; in vertebrates, amphetamines interact with the same protein target as cocaine. Parthenolide is also unable to prevent pSLM elicited by the cholinergic compounds nicotine and cytisine or by the glutamatergic agents L- or D- glutamic acid or NMDA. Thus, we conclude that parthenolide is a specific anti-cocaine agent in this experimental organism
