Use of twitter data for waste minimisation in beef supply chain
Approximately one third of the food produced is discarded or lost, which accounts for 1.3 billion tons per annum. The waste is being generated throughout the supply chain viz. farmers, wholesalers/processors, logistics, retailers and consumers. The majority of waste occurs at the interface of retailers and consumers. Many global retailers are making efforts to extract intelligence from customer’s complaints left at retail store to backtrack their supply chain to mitigate the waste. However, majority of the customers don’t leave the complaints in the store because of various reasons like inconvenience, lack of time, distance, ignorance etc. In current digital world, consumers are active on social media and express their sentiments, thoughts, and opinions about a particular product freely. For example, on an average, 45,000 tweets are tweeted daily related to beef products to express their likes and dislikes. These tweets are large in volume, scattered and unstructured in nature. In this study, twitter data is utilised to develop waste minimization strategies by backtracking the supply chain. The execution process of proposed framework is demonstrated for beef supply chain. The proposed model is generic enough and can be applied to other domains as well
The application of omics in ruminant production: a review in the tropical and sub-tropical animal production context
The demand for animal products (e.g. dairy and beef) in tropical regions is expected to increase in parallel with the public demand for sustainable practices, due to factors such as population growth and climate change. The necessity to increase animal production output must be achieved with better management and production technologies. For this to happen, novel research methodologies, animal selection and postgenomic tools play a pivotal role. Indeed, improving breeder selection programs, the quality of meat and dairy products as well as animal health will contribute to higher sustainability and productivity. This would surely benefit regions where resource quality and quantity are increasingly unstable, and research is still very incipient, which is the case of many regions in the tropics. The purpose of this review is to demonstrate how omics-based approaches play a major role in animal science, particularly concerning ruminant production systems and research associated to the tropics and developing countriesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Clinico-epidemiological characteristics of patients reported with intra-hospital infection in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Cienfuegos, 2015-2019
Background: the rate of intra-hospital infections is one of the qualities of services’ indicators; It acquires greater importance in pediatric intensive care units, due to its high incidence and severity. Objective: to characterize the cases of infection associated with health care in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Methods: retrospective descriptive study of patients admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Paquito González Cueto University Pediatric Hospital, Cienfuegos, who acquired an infection in this unit, in the period from 2015 to 2019. The analyzed variables were: age at discharge, sex, location of sepsis, high-risk procedure, use of microbiological support and its positivity, lethality. Results: the average rate of infection associated with care was 3.5 per 100 discharges; Children under one year of age were more affected with 27.3%. Respiratory infection predominated with 46.8%. The use of venous catheterization occurred in 94.8% of the cases and antimicrobials due to previous infections were applied in 49.4%. Microbiological support was performed in 77.9% and it was positive in 76.7%. Gram negative germs predominated. Four patients died. Conclusions: the nosocomial infection rate is comparable with the numbers reported internationally. Children under one year of age are more infected, with a non-negligible lethality, so prevention and control measures aimed at the main risk factors for their appearance must be taken to extremes.</p
