Progress Towards Modeling the Ablation Response of NuSil-Coated PICA
The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Entry, Descent and Landing Instrumentation (MEDLI) collected in-flight data largely used by the ablation community to verify and validate physics-based models for the response of the Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator (PICA) material [1-4]. MEDLI data were recently used to guide the development of NASAs high-fidelity material response models for PICA, implemented in the Porous material Analysis Toolbox based on OpenFOAM (PATO) software [5-6]. A follow-up instrumentation suite, MEDLI2, is planned for the upcoming Mars 2020 mission [7] after the large scientific impact of MEDLI. Recent analyses performed as part of MEDLI2 development draw the attention to significant effects of a protective coating to the aerothermal response of PICA. NuSil, a silicone-based overcoat sprayed onto the MSL heatshield as contamination control, is currently neglected in PICA ablation models. To mitigate the spread of phenolic dust from PICA, NuSil was applied to the entire MSL heatshield, including the MEDLI plugs. NuSil is a space grade designation of the siloxane copolymer, primarily used to protect against atomic oxygen erosion in the Low Earth Orbit environment. Ground testing of PICA-NuSil (PICA-N) models all exhibited surface temperature jumps of the order of 200 K due to oxide scale formation and subsequent NuSil burn-off. It is therefore critical to include a model for the aerothermal response of the coating in ongoing code development and validation efforts
Womenâs experiences of transfer from primary maternity unit to tertiary hospital in New Zealand: part of the prospective cohort Evaluating Maternity Units study
BACKGROUND: There is worldwide debate regarding the appropriateness and safety of different birthplaces for well women. The Evaluating Maternity Units (EMU) studyâs primary objective was to compare clinical outcomes for well women intending to give birth in either a tertiary level maternity hospital or a freestanding primary level maternity unit. Little is known about how women experience having to change their birthplace plans during the antenatal period or before admission to a primary unit, or transfer following admission. This paper describes and explores womenâs experience of these changes-a secondary aim of the EMU study. METHODS: This paper utilised the six week postpartum survey data, from the 174 women from the primary unit cohort affected by birthplace plan change or transfer (response rate 73Â %). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The study was undertaken in Christchurch, New Zealand, which has an obstetric-led tertiary maternity hospital and four freestanding midwife-led primary maternity units (2010â2012). The 702 study participants were well, pregnant women booked to give birth in one of these facilities, all of whom received continuity of midwifery care, regardless of their intended or actual birthplace. RESULTS: Of the women who had to change their planned place of birth or transfer the greatest proportion of women rated themselves on a Likert scale as unbothered by the move (38.6Â %); 8.8Â % were âvery unhappyâ and 7.6Â % âvery happyâ (quantitative analysis). Four themes were identified, using thematic analysis, from the open ended survey responses of those who experienced transfer: ânot to planâ, control, communication and âmy midwifeâ. An interplay between the themes created a cumulatively positive or negative effect on their experience. Womenâs experience of transfer in labour was generally positive, and none expressed stress or trauma with transfer. CONCLUSIONS: The women knew of the potential for change or transfer, although it was not wanted or planned. When they maintained a sense control, experienced effective communication with caregivers, and support and information from their midwife, the transfer did not appear to be experienced negatively. The model of continuity of midwifery care in New Zealand appeared to mitigate the negative aspects of womenâs experience of transfer and facilitate positive birth experiences
Weighted network modules
The inclusion of link weights into the analysis of network properties allows
a deeper insight into the (often overlapping) modular structure of real-world
webs. We introduce a clustering algorithm (CPMw, Clique Percolation Method with
weights) for weighted networks based on the concept of percolating k-cliques
with high enough intensity. The algorithm allows overlaps between the modules.
First, we give detailed analytical and numerical results about the critical
point of weighted k-clique percolation on (weighted) Erdos-Renyi graphs. Then,
for a scientist collaboration web and a stock correlation graph we compute
three-link weight correlations and with the CPMw the weighted modules. After
reshuffling link weights in both networks and computing the same quantities for
the randomised control graphs as well, we show that groups of 3 or more strong
links prefer to cluster together in both original graphs.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
Gene expression time delays & Turing pattern formation systems
The incorporation of time delays can greatly affect the behaviour of partial differential equations and dynamical systems. In addition, there is evidence that time delays in gene expression due to transcription and translation play an important role in the dynamics of cellular systems. In this paper, we investigate the effects of incorporating gene expression time delays into a one-dimensional putative reaction diffusion pattern formation mechanism on both stationary domains and domains with spatially uniform exponential growth. While oscillatory behaviour is rare, we find that the time taken to initiate and stabilise patterns increases dramatically as the time delay is increased. In addition, we observe that on rapidly growing domains the time delay can induce a failure of the Turing instability which cannot be predicted by a naive linear analysis of the underlying equations about the homogeneous steady state. The dramatic lag in the induction of patterning, or even its complete absence on occasions, highlights the importance of considering explicit gene expression time delays in models for cellular reaction diffusion patterning
How low can SUSY go? Matching, monojets and compressed spectra
If supersymmetry (SUSY) has a compressed spectrum then the current mass
limits from the LHC can be drastically reduced. We consider a possible 'worst
case' scenario where the gluino and/or squarks are degenerate with the lightest
SUSY particle (LSP). The most sensitive searches for these compressed spectra
are via the final state LSPs recoiling against initial state radiation (ISR).
Therefore it is vital that the ISR is understood and possible uncertainties in
the predictions are evaluated. We use both MLM (with Pythia 6) and CKKW- L
(with Pythia 8) matching and vary matching scales and parton shower properties
to accurately determine the theoretical uncertainties in the kinematic
distributions. All current LHC SUSY and monojet analyses are employed and we
find the most constraining limits come from the CMS Razor and CMS monojet
searches. For a scenario of squarks degenerate with the LSP and decoupled
gluinos we find GeV. For gluinos degenerate with the LSP
and decoupled squarks, GeV. For equal mass squarks and
gluinos degenerate with the LSP, GeV.Comment: References added, version submitted to ep
Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud: A Far-UV Spectroscopic Analysis
We observed seven central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) in the Large
Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE),
and performed a model-based analysis of these spectra in conjunction with
Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra in the UV and optical range to determine
the stellar and nebular parameters. Most of the objects show wind features, and
they have effective temperatures ranging from 38 to 60 kK with mass-loss rates
of ~= 5x10^-8 Msun/yr. Five of the objects have typical LMC abundances. One
object (SMP LMC 61) is a [WC4] star, and we fit its spectra with He/C/O-rich
abundances typical of the [WC] class, and find its atmosphere to be
iron-deficient. Most objects have very hot (T ~> 2000 K) molecular hydrogen in
their nebulae, which may indicate a shocked environment. One of these (SMP LMC

Synthesis and evaluation of novel antifungal agents targeted to the plasma membrane H[+]-ATPase
A library of dienones were synthesized as candidate antifungal agents. These compounds were screened against Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans using macro-broth susceptibility assay. The dienones exhibited a broad range of inhibition against S. cerevisiae (0.2-99%) and C. albicans (0-99%). 3,5-bis(p- trifluoromethylbenzylidene)-1-methyl-piperidine-4-one was identified as the most potent inhibitor of S. cerevisiae.
