Diversity and Physiological Characterization of D-Xylose-Fermenting Yeasts Isolated from the Brazilian Amazonian Forest
Background: This study is the first to investigate the Brazilian Amazonian Forest to identify new D-xylose-fermenting yeasts that might potentially be used in the production of ethanol from sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysates. Methodology/Principal Findings: A total of 224 yeast strains were isolated from rotting wood samples collected in two Amazonian forest reserve sites. These samples were cultured in yeast nitrogen base (YNB)-D-xylose or YNB-xylan media. Candida tropicalis, Asterotremella humicola, Candida boidinii and Debaryomyces hansenii were the most frequently isolated yeasts. Among D-xylose-fermenting yeasts, six strains of Spathaspora passalidarum, two of Scheffersomyces stipitis, and representatives of five new species were identified. The new species included Candida amazonensis of the Scheffersomyces clade and Spathaspora sp. 1, Spathaspora sp. 2, Spathaspora sp. 3, and Candida sp. 1 of the Spathaspora clade. In fermentation assays using D-xylose (50 g/L) culture medium, S. passalidarum strains showed the highest ethanol yields (0.31 g/g to 0.37 g/g) and productivities (0.62 g/L.h to 0.75 g/L.h). Candida amazonensis exhibited a virtually complete D-xylose consumption and the highest xylitol yields (0.55 g/g to 0.59 g/g), with concentrations up to 25.2 g/L. The new Spathaspora species produced ethanol and/or xylitol in different concentrations as the main fermentation products. In sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic fermentation assays, S. stipitis UFMG-XMD-15.2 generated the highest ethanol yield (0.34 g/g) and productivity (0.2 g/L.h), while the new species Spathaspora sp. 1 UFMG-XMD-16.2 and Spathaspora sp. 2 UFMG-XMD-23.2 were very good xylitol producers. Conclusions/Significance: This study demonstrates the promise of using new D-xylose-fermenting yeast strains from the Brazilian Amazonian Forest for ethanol or xylitol production from sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysates.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq), BrazilConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq - Brazil) [560715/2010-2]Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG)Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG)Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP) [2008/57926-4]Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP)Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES) [2280/2008]Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES)Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of CanadaNatural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canad
The Triple Jump in Problem-Based Learning: Unpacking Principles and Practices in Designing Assessment for Curriculum Alignment
Assessment validity, reliability, and constructive alignment to planned learning outcomes are less understood in the context of integrated, problem-based curricula. This conceptual paper examines a Triple Jump Assessment (TJA) employed as a formative and summative assessment system in the first year of an undergraduate dental program. Specifically, we deconstructed this instantiation of a TJA in terms of management and co-ordination; assessment design and item development; assessment administration; and assessment review, refinement and modification. Four core principles of TJA design for constructive alignment in an integrated, problem-based curriculum were identified as: (a) viewing the assessment design process as a collaborative and collective faculty endeavor; (b) recognizing the assessment design process as dependent on faculty and students’ shared understandings of learning, teaching, and assessment; (c) highlighting the centrality of ongoing review and monitoring to ensure validity and reliability; and (d) prioritizing student learning in the development of the TJA as an assessment system
Stres Kerja Pegawai
Librarians\u27 Experiences of E-Marketing in Academic Libraries Using Social Media
ABSTRACT
Purpose/objectives. This study aims to explore librarians’ experiences of e-marketing using social media comprehensively.
Design, methodology, approach. Employing a mixed-methods research design the study integrates quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The primary data collection tool was a survey questionnaire, whose reliability was validated through rigorous testing. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 24 academic librarians from academic libraries in Misamis Occidental, ensuring participants had relevant experience and insights.
Findings. The study found that respondents evaluated the motivations and goals for using social media for e-marketing as very important. The librarians\u27 motivations for adopting social media in e-marketing were to expand the library\u27s online presence and reach, promote library resources, services, and events, attract new library users, and enhance user engagement. The goal was to showcase the library’s unique resources. Meanwhile, the respondents strongly agreed on the major challenges such as keeping content relevant and engaging, limited budget for advertising, lack of support or training in e-marketing strategies, and staying up-to-date with trends and platform changes. The strategies to overcome these were to create engaging and shareable content and engage with the audience through comments and suggestions. Improving brand awareness is the key to enhancing the challenges and to measure the success there is a need to improve community awareness and perception of the library. Moreover, the respondents also strongly agreed on the opportunities such as increasing visibility and brand awareness for the library. Facebook is the most effective social media platform to utilize in e-marketing. The benefits were evaluated as very important, such as enhancing user involvement, promoting services and programs to a broader audience, and opportunities to showcase the library’s expertise and resources. Further, the respondents strongly agreed on the perceived impact on library services and user engagement because it increases visibility and awareness of library resources and services and enhances the promotion of library events and workshops.
Research limitations and implications. One significant limitation is the potential for a limited sample size or demographic, which may not fully represent the diverse experiences of librarians across different institutions in Misamis Occidental. Additionally, the rapidly evolving nature of social media platforms means that the findings may quickly become outdated, necessitating ongoing research to keep pace with technological advancements and changing user behavior. Despite these limitations, the study has important implications for academic libraries, providing valuable insights into effective e-marketing strategies and highlighting the need for continuous professional development in social media skills. By understanding the challenges and successes faced by librarians, academic institutions can better support their staff and enhance their digital outreach efforts, ultimately improving user engagement and access to library resources.
Originality of the paper: The study may provide evidence-based practices that can be adopted or adapted by other academic libraries, leading to more effective and efficient e-marketing efforts.
Keywords: e-marketing, e-marketing strategies, social media, academic libraries, academic librarians, librarians’ experience
Effects of behavioral health education intervention in the wound care efficacy level among school-age children
This study utilized the quasi-experimental design specifically the non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The respondents of the study were composed of 80 grade six students ages 10-12 years old. The study was conducted in two public elementary schools in Cavite. The level of performance in wound care based on adapted and modified tool from NHS Walsall Community Health Integrated Governance Sub Group (2011) and Patient Information were used to gather the profile of the respondents in terms of age and the measurement of the wound care skills were the research instruments used. Based on the findings generated by the study, the researchers came with the following conclusions: (1) majority of the respondents were 12 years old; (2) there was good efficacy level among school-age children in the treatment group and poor efficacy level in the control group prior to behavioral health education intervention, whereas after the provision of behavioral health education intervention, the treatment group still had a good efficiency level as well as the control group although a slight increase in the statistical result was noticeable; (3) there was a significant difference in the wound care efficacy level among school-age children before and after the behavioral health education intervention and between those who were exposed and not exposed to the said intervention
