Traveling Granular Segregation Patterns in a Long Drum Mixer

Mixtures of granular media often exhibit size segregation along the axis of a partially-filled, horizontal, rotating cylinder. Previous experiments have observed axial bands of segregation that grow from concentration fluctuations and merge in a manner analogous to spinodal decomposition. We have observed that a new dynamical state precedes this effect in certain mixtures: bi-directional traveling waves. By preparing initial conditions, we found that the wave speed decreased with wavelength. Such waves appear to be inconsistent with simple PDE models which are first order in time.Comment: 11 page

Ethnicity, voter alignment and political party affiliation - an African case: Zambia

Conventional wisdom holds that ethnicity provides the social cleavage for voting behav-iour and party affiliation in Africa. Because this is usually inferred from aggregate data of national election results, it might prove to be an ecological fallacy. The evidence based on individual data from an opinion survey in Zambia suggests that ethnicity matters for voter alignment and even more so for party affiliation, but it is certainly not the only factor. The analysis also points to a number of qualifications which are partly methodology-related. One is that the degree of ethnic voting can differ from one ethno-political group to the other depending on various degrees of ethnic mobilisation. Another is that if smaller eth-nic groups or subgroups do not identify with one particular party, it is difficult to find a significant statistical correlation between party affiliation and ethnicity - but that does not prove that they do not affiliate along ethnic lines.Wahlverhalten und Mitgliedschaft in politischen Parteien Afrikas ist nur wenig untersucht worden. Gewöhnlich wird argumentiert, dass Ethnizität als soziale Konfliktlinie das Wahlverhalten und die Parteienmitgliedschaft strukturiert. Da dieses Argument auf hoch aggregierten Wahldaten beruht, kann hier ein ökologischer Fehlschuss vorliegen. Die vorliegende Analyse beruht deshalb auf individuellen Umfragedaten aus Sambia. Das Ergebnis ist, dass Ethnizität tatsächlich eine Rolle für das Wahlverhalten und die Parteienmitgliedschaft spielt, aber keineswegs den einzigen Erklärungsfaktor darstellt. Die Analyse offenbart zudem eine Reihe von Einschränkungen und Qualifizierungen, die teilweise methodischer Natur sind. Tapping accounting with a hammer : a radical examination of accounting in the light of Nietzsche

Bibliography: pages 112-120.This thesis argues that Accounting can never hope to be a value-free communicative medium grounded in and reflecting an external and knowable reality. Friedrich Nietzsche showed that we can only grasp the "real world" by means of useful fictions conditioned by our own perspective on the world. Any attempt to describe the world will always be distorted by the various contingent social, economic and political circumstances which influence our perspectives. Nietzsche's views on language are referred to, in seeking to demonstrate the inability of any language to communicate without communicating preconceived notions about reality. The thesis explores the assumptions upon which the mainstream perspective of accounting has based its world-view and attempts to show its limitations, both as a theory of Accounting and as a method of research, and shows the ideological bias inherent in it. Alternatives are suggested to replace or complement those of the mainstream in an attempt to create an awareness of the fact that the mainstream's way of seeing the world can never be privileged over other ways

The Ahmed Baerveldt Comparison Study

PURPOSE: The Ahmed Baerveldt Comparative (ABC) Study compares the long-term outcomes and complications of the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve (AGV), model FP7, and the Baerveldt Glaucoma Implant (BGI), model 101–350. DESIGN: Multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: 276 glaucoma patients at 16 clinical centers worldwide, aged 18–85 years with inadequately controlled intraocular pressure (IOP ≥ 18 mm Hg) in whom placement of an aqueous shunt was planned. METHODS: Study patients were randomized to undergo implantation of an AGV or a BGI. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Failure, defined as IOP > 21 mm Hg or not reduced by 20% below baseline IOP ≤ 5 mm Hg (2 consecuteive visits after 3 months), additional glaucoma surgery, removal of the implant or loss of light perception vision RESULTS: A total of 276 patients were enrolled between October 2006 and April 2008, including 143 in the AGV group and 133 in the BGI group. The age of patients enrolled was 63 ± 14 years (mean ± standard deviation, SD), and 52% were male. The baseline IOP was 31.5 ± 11.8 mmHg (mean ± SD). Except for a 13% higher prevalence of hypertension in the AGV group, no significant differences in baseline demographic or ocular characteristics were observed between the study groups. Intraoperative complications occurred in 11 (8%) patients in the AGV group and 16 (12%) patients in the BGI group (p = 0.31). CONCLUSIONS: The ABC study should yield valuable prospective data comparing two commonly used aqueous shunts in clinical practice

Este trabalho realiza um estudo no Parque Estadual de Itapuã, unidade de conservação localizada em Viamão/RS. Nesse universo, busca observar as experiências de interação humana com a natureza e como elas possibilitam as mudanças comportamentais idealizadas pelo discurso ecológico. Considera também o surgimento de novas sensibilidades em relação ao meio ambiente instigadas tanto pelas atividades de educação ambiental promovidas pelo parque quanto pelas atividades de lazer. Traz na sua base teórica a idéia de pertencimento humano à paisagem como geradora de percepções que regem a transformação da noção de uso da natureza para uma concepção mais holística da realidade.This report is a study on Parque Estadual de Itapuã, a conservation unit in Viamão /RS. In this place, this report observes the experiences of interaction among human beings and nature and how they make possible the behavioral changes idealized by the ecological thoughts. It also brings new sensibilities related to the environment which are instigated either for environmental education activities offered in the park or for entertainment activities. The theorical basis is the idea that the human being belongs to landscape, this idea generates the perceptions that rule the transformation of the idea of the use of the nature in an holistic conception
