Classical Stability of the BTZ Black Hole in Topologically Massive Gravity
We demonstrate the classical stability of the BTZ black hole within the
context of topologically massive gravity. The linearized perturbation equations
can be solved exactly in this case. By choosing standard boundary conditions
appropriate to the stability problem, we demonstrate the absence of modes which
grow in time, for all values of the Chern-Simons coupling.Comment: 11 page
Some experimental observations of crack-tip mechanics with displacement data
Estudio de la mecánica en el vértice de la grieta mediante datos de desplazamiento. In the past two decades, crack-tip mechanics has been increasingly studied with full-field
techniques. Within these techniques, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) has been most widely used due to its
many advantages, to extract important crack-tip information, including Stress Intensity Factor (SIF), Crack
Opening Displacement, J-integral, T-stress, closure level, plastic zone size, etc. However, little information is
given in the literature about the experimental setup that provides best estimations for the different parameters.
The current work aims at understanding how the experimental conditions used in DIC influence the crack-tip
information extracted experimentally. The influence of parameters such as magnification factor, size of the
images, position of the images with respect the crack-tip and size of the subset used in the correlation is studied.
The influence is studied in terms of SIF and T-stress by using Williams’ model. The concept of determination of
the K-dominance zone from experimental data has also explored. In this regard, cyclic loading on a fatigue
crack in a compact tension (CT) specimen, made of aluminium 2024-T351 alloy, has been applied and the
surface deformation ahead of the crack tip has been examined. The comparison between theoretical and
experimental values of KI showed that the effect of subset size on the measured KI is negligible compared to
the effect of size of the image.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech
Theoretical study of the structural stability, electronic and magnetic properties of XVSb (X Fe, Ni, and Co) half-Heusler compounds
The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of half-Heusler compounds
XVSb (X Fe, Co and Ni) are investigated by using the density functional
theory with generalized gradient approximation (GGA), and Tran-Blaha modified
Becke-Johnson (TB-mBJ) exchange potential approximation. It is found that the
half-metallic gaps are generally reasonably widened by mBJ as compared to the
GGA approximation. The magnetic proprieties of XVSb (X Fe, Co and Ni) are
well defined within mBJ with an exact integer value of magnetic moment. The
band gaps given by TB-mBJ are in good agreement with the available theoretical
data. The FeVSb exhibits a semiconductor nature. The CoVSb and NiVSb present
half-metallic behaviour with total magnetic moment of and
in good agreement with Slater-Pauling rule. These alloys seem
to be a potential candidate of spintronic devices.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
An investigation of fish consumption attitude among nutrition experts in Iran
Nutrition experts have a large audience form the general public, so they can exert high impacts on the fish consumption attitude of the lay people. As such, we deemed an investigation of the fish consumption attitude of nutrition experts of great importance in fish extension planning and policy making. We selected 144 nutrition experts and interviewed them in September 2005. The results showed that 64% of the respondents believed advertisement on fish consumption could have high to very high effect on the promotion of fish consumption attitude of the people
Detection of human papillomavirus DNA in intraosseus ameloblastoma
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been shown as a risk factor in oral carcinogenesis. The association between HPV and benign and malignant neoplasm of oral mucosa, especially surface epithelium-derived tumors, is well established. The role of HPV in pathogenesis of odontogenic cysts and tumors has been published in few articles. The aim of this study was detection of HPV in Iranian patients with intrabony ameloblastoma and investigation of specific risk factors associated with ameloblastoma. One hundred intrabony ameloblastoma and 50 age-sex matched samples as controls were evaluated by polymerase chain reaction for the detection and typing of HPV. Fisher exact and chi square tests were used to assess the data. HPV DNA was detected in 32% of patients and 10% of controls. HPV-6 was the most prevalent genotype (31.6%) in infected cases. It was followed by HPV-11 (12.5%), HPV-16 (12.5%) and HPV-31 (3.1%). We found a significant association between presence of HPV and location of tumor (p = 0.02), traumatic history (p = 0.03) and ododontic therapy (p = 0.01). These findings indicated that HPV-6 probably is one of the most important etiologic agents in causing intraosseous ameloblastoma in Iranian population. © 2006 Academic Journals Inc., USA

Impact of Harmonics on Power Quality and Losses in Power Distribution Systems
This paper investigates the harmonic distortion and losses in power distribution systems due to the dramatic increase of nonlinear loads. This paper tries to determine the amount of the harmonics generated by nonlinear loads in residential, commercial and office loads in distribution feeders and estimates the energy losses due to these harmonics. Norton equivalent modeling technique has been used to model the nonlinear loads. The presented harmonic Norton equivalent models of the end user appliances are accurately obtained based on the experimental data taken from the laboratory measurements. A 20 kV/400V distribution feeder is simulated to analyze the impact of nonlinear loads on feeder harmonic distortion level and losses. The model follows a “bottom-up” approach, starting from end users appliances Norton equivalent model and then modeling residential, commercial and office loads. Two new indices are introduced by the authors to quantize the effect of each nonlinear appliance on the power quality of a distribution feeder and loads are ranked based on these new defined indices. The simulation results show that harmonic distortion in distribution systems can increase power losses up to 20%
