    Artificial insemination in penaeid shrimps

Artificial Insemination (AI) is a tool for genetic manipulation in the shrimp stocks. It is seen as one of the means for propagating shrimp culture to new areas by controlled reproduction. Attempts at artificial insemination in the dominant closed-thelycum penaeid shrimps species of the area viz. Metapenaeus affinis and Metapenaeus brevicornis were induced in wild adult stocks collected off Mumbai coast. Female specimens were subjected to unilateral eyestalk ablation by pinching so as to induce moulting and maturation. AI was performed two days after moulting on these females when the cuticle was still soft and flexible. Moulting also ensured rejection of initial spermatophores, if present. Response of males to electrical stimulation for spermatophore expulsion was spontaneous. Use of tissue glue for spermatophore retention was found to be unnecessary. Latency period ranged between10-16 days, while spawning occurred within 10-12 days of spermatophore transfer. Three partial spawning were recorded viz., two in Metapenaeus affinis and one in Metapenaeus brevicornis with an average spawning and hatching rates of 30% and 72.3% respectively. Average survival from first nauplius (N1) to one-day old post-larva (PLI) was a meager 3.43%. Use of AI in genetic manipulation of shrimp stocks for aquacultural purposes is indicated

OBJECTIVE: To compare the rate of progression of diabetic chronic kidney disease in different ethnic groups. DESIGN: Prospective longitudinal observational study. PARTICIPANTS: All new patients attending a tertiary renal unit in east London with diabetic chronic kidney disease between 2000 and 2007 and followed up till 2009 were included. Patients presenting with acute end-stage kidney failure were excluded. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was annual decline in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in different ethnic groups. Secondary end points were the number of patients developing end-stage kidney failure and total mortality during the study period. RESULTS: 329 patients (age 60±11.9 years, 208 men) were studied comprising 149 south Asian, 105 White and 75 Black patients. Mean follow-up was 6.0±2.3, 5.0±2.7 and 5.6±2.4 years for White, Black and south Asian patients, respectively. South Asian patients were younger and had a higher baseline eGFR, but both systolic and diastolic blood pressures were higher in Black patients (p<0.05). Baseline proteinuria was highest for the south Asian group followed by the White and Black groups. Adjusted linear regression analysis showed that an annual decline in eGFR was not significantly different between the three groups. The numbers of patients developing end-stage kidney failure and total mortality were also not significantly different between the three groups. ACE or angiotensin receptor blockers use, and glycated haemoglobin were similar at baseline and throughout the study period. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that ethnicity is not an independent factor in the rate of progression renal failure in patients with diabetic chronic kidney disease

Characterization and Screening of N(2)-fixing Microorganisms at Maturity Stage in Rhizosphere of Rice Grown in Brahmaputra Alluvium Soil of Bangladesh

Studies on the existing non-symbiotic diazotrophic systems still are the most promising for better use of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in agriculture. The possibilities for the extension of nitrogen fixation to rice plants still speculative. The prospect of extension of N(2)-fixation to other plants was originally formulated to simulate the possibilities for the biological use of atmospheric nitrogen in order to overcome the ecological and economical problems of nitrogenous fertilizers. In view of this, the present study was conducted for the characterization and identification of N(2)-fixing bacterial strains at the maturity (110 days) stage in rhizosphere of rice (BR 10, Oryza sativa L.) grown in Brahmaputra Alluvium soil of Bangladesh. The soil is characterized as 'Inceptisol' order and 'Aquept' suborder. It was identified as 'Dhamrai series', had 'silt' texture, pH 6.0 and 6.8 C/N ratio. The present results of the microbial tests on the rice rhizosphere soil demonstrated that out of 401 isolates, only 94 were branded as nitrogen fixing organisms per gram of soil, which is about 23.4% of the total isolates. Based on the selection criteria, four individual strains were selected for identification. Biochemical tests were conducted for proper identification. They were identified as Closteridium spp., Klebsiella spp., Bacillus spp. and Azospirllum spp

Tracheal intubation for general anesthesia can sometimes be difficult in patients with a large mass in the mouth floor. Preoperative evaluation of the patient's airway is most important when treating large oral disease

Bilayer Button Graft for Endoscopic Repair of High-Flow Cranial Base Defects

Closure of dural defects in trans-nasal, extended, endoscopic techniques remains a challenge, and published cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak rates are higher than rates for trans-cranial approaches. Development of a technique that used a vascularized, nasoseptal flap (NSF) significantly reduced the rate of CSF leak, and several groups have developed ways to buttress the NSF. A closure technique developed at our institution uses a bilayer “button” of fascia lata. The initial series of twenty patients repaired with this method from 2007 to July 1, 2009 were presented, with a CSF leak rate of 10% (Luginbuhl et al 2010)

A Novel Enhanced-Majority-Voter Universal Gate in Quantum Dot Cellular Automata with Energy Dissipation Analysis

The Quantum effects instigate to dominate device recital when transistor geometries are abridged. Sometimes, transistors refrain to have the properties that mark them beneficial for computational designs. With the intention of keeping pace with Moore’s Law, diverse assessing elements must be developed. An alternative prototype to transistor-based logic is Quantum dot cellular automata. This technology has an enormous capability to provide ultra-high density and extremely low power dissipation. These features allow us to develop high-speed, small and high performance circuits for computation and integration. Architectures made in quantum dot cellular automata have been d esigned by exploiting either the inverter and the majority gate or universal gates like And -Or-Inverter, NAND-NOR-Inverter, FNZ and AIN. A new universal logic gate called as Enhanced Majority Voter Gate is presented in this paper which enjoys better performance with respect to previously announced universal gates. Design of several logic utilities via the proposed Enhanced Majority Voter Gate is also demonstrated. The functionality and power analysis of this universal gate is verified by the QCA Designer and QCA Pro simulation tool where a comprehensive comparison with the hitherto stated designs confirms the reliable performance of the proposed designs. The proposed Enhanced Majority Voter Gate helps us in framing various cryptographic and security based circuits in Quantum dot ce llular automata
