Corrosion Control through Surface Modification
Steel is widely used for a broad range of structural and engineering application owing to its excellent mechanical properties and many favourable characteristics. However, it is susceptible to corrosion caused by interaction with the environment. The direct-loss cost of corrosion have resulted in figure corresponding to 3-4% of GNP in deve-loped countries, where the share of industry in GNP is 32 to 41 %. In India in a recent year this loss is Rs. 40x109. An estimated average of 15 to 20% of these losses could be saved by implementing corrosion control measures

Signature of short distance physics on inflation power spectrum and CMB anisotropy
The inflaton field responsible for inflation may not be a canonical
fundamental scalar. It is possible that the inflaton is a composite of fermions
or it may have a decay width. In these cases the standard procedure for
calculating the power spectrum is not applicable and a new formalism needs to
be developed to determine the effect of short range interactions of the
inflaton on the power spectrum and the CMB anisotropy. We develop a general
formalism for computing the power spectrum of curvature perturbations for such
non-canonical cases by using the flat space K\"all\'en-Lehmann spectral
function in curved quasi-de Sitter space assuming implicitly that the
Bunch-Davis boundary conditions enforces the inflaton mode functions to be
plane wave in the short wavelength limit and a complete set of mode functions
exists in quasi-de Sitter space. It is observed that the inflaton with a decay
width suppresses the power at large scale while a composite inflaton's power
spectrum oscillates at large scales. These observations may be vindicated in
the WMAP data and confirmed by future observations with PLANCK.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, Extended journal version, Accepted for

Tomographic approach to resolving the distribution of LISA Galactic binaries
The space based gravitational wave detector LISA is expected to observe a
large population of Galactic white dwarf binaries whose collective signal is
likely to dominate instrumental noise at observational frequencies in the range
10^{-4} to 10^{-3} Hz. The motion of LISA modulates the signal of each binary
in both frequency and amplitude, the exact modulation depending on the source
direction and frequency. Starting with the observed response of one LISA
interferometer and assuming only doppler modulation due to the orbital motion
of LISA, we show how the distribution of the entire binary population in
frequency and sky position can be reconstructed using a tomographic approach.
The method is linear and the reconstruction of a delta function distribution,
corresponding to an isolated binary, yields a point spread function (psf). An
arbitrary distribution and its reconstruction are related via smoothing with
this psf. Exploratory results are reported demonstrating the recovery of binary
sources, in the presence of white Gaussian noise.Comment: 13 Pages and 9 figures high resolution figures can be obtains from

Energy Dependence of High Moments for Net-proton Distributions
High moments of multiplicity distributions of conserved quantities are
predicted to be sensitive to critical fluctuations. To understand the effect of
the complicated non-critical physics backgrounds on the proposed observable, we
have studied various moments of net-proton distributions with AMPT, Hijing,
Therminator and UrQMD models, in which no QCD critical point physics is
implemented. It is found that the centrality evolution of various moments of
net-proton distributions can be uniformly described by a superposition of
emission sources. In addition, in the absence of critical phenomena, some
moment products of net-proton distribution, related to the baryon number
susceptibilities ratio in Lattice QCD calculation, are predicted to be constant
as a function of the collision centrality. We argue that a non-monotonic
dependence of the moment products as a function collision centrality and the
beam energy may be used to locate the QCD critical point.Comment: SQM2009 Proceeding, 6 pages, 5 figure
Technique for optimal placement of transducers for fault detection in rotating machines
Online fault detection and diagnosis of rotating machinery requires a number of transducers that can be significantly expensive for industrial processes. The sensitivity of various transducers and their appropriate positioning are dependent on different types of fault conditions. It is critical to formulate a method to systematically determine the effectiveness of transducer locations for monitoring the condition of a machine. In this article, number of independent sources analysis is used as an effective tool for reducing the number of vibration sources within the system, which is then followed by prin- cipal component analysis to identify the incoherent transducers to be employed for fault detection. This experiment is conducted on a machine fault simulator for unbalanced rotor, misaligned shaft, and cracked shaft. The validation of the proposed selection process is illustrated using spectral analysis for each defect.Peer reviewe
A Spin-Mechanical Device for Detection and Control of Spin Current by Nanomechanical Torque
We propose a spin-mechanical device to control and detect spin currents by
mechanical torque. Our hybrid nano-electro-mechanical device, which contains a
nanowire with a ferromagnetic-nonmagnetic interface, is designed to measure or
induce spin polarized currents. Since spin carries angular momentum, a spin
flip or spin transfer process involves a change in angular momentum--and hence,
a torque--which enables mechanical measurement of spin flips. Conversely, an
applied torque can result in spin polarization and spin current.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Variability of signal to noise ratio and the network analysis of gravitational wave burst signals
The detection and estimation of gravitational wave burst signals, with {\em a
priori} unknown polarization waveforms, requires the use of data from a network
of detectors. For determining how the data from such a network should be
combined, approaches based on the maximum likelihood principle have proven to
be useful. The most straightforward among these uses the global maximum of the
likelihood over the space of all waveforms as both the detection statistic and
signal estimator. However, in the case of burst signals, a physically
counterintuitive situation results: for two aligned detectors the statistic
includes the cross-correlation of the detector outputs, as expected, but this
term disappears even for an infinitesimal misalignment. This {\em two detector
paradox} arises from the inclusion of improbable waveforms in the solution
space of maximization. Such waveforms produce widely different responses in
detectors that are closely aligned. We show that by penalizing waveforms that
exhibit large signal-to-noise ratio (snr) variability, as the corresponding
source is moved on the sky, a physically motivated restriction is obtained that
(i) resolves the two detector paradox and (ii) leads to a better performing
statistic than the global maximum of the likelihood. Waveforms with high snr
variability turn out to be precisely the ones that are improbable in the sense
mentioned above. The coherent network analysis method thus obtained can be
applied to any network, irrespective of the number or the mutual alignment of
detectors.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
Persistence at the onset of spatiotemporal intermittency in coupled map lattices
We study persistence in coupled circle map lattices at the onset of
spatiotemporal intermittency, an onset which marks a continuous transition, in
the universality class of directed percolation, to a unique absorbing state. We
obtain a local persistence exponent of theta_l = 1.49 +- 0.02 at this
transition, a value which closely matches values for theta_l obtained in
stochastic models of directed percolation. This result constitutes suggestive
evidence for the universality of persistence exponents at the directed
percolation transition. Given that many experimental systems are modelled
accurately by coupled map lattices, experimental measurements of this
persistence exponent may be feasible.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, 6 Postscript figures, Europhysics Letters (to appear
