A Panel Data Analysis of FDI, Trade Openness, and Liberalization on Economic Growth of the ASEAN-5

    Get PDF
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has contributed heavily to development of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). In this study, the concentration is on five ASEAN countries: namely Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. FDI inflows into the ASEAN-5 multiplied spectacularly from 1980 to 1997, but the trend has reversed since the Asian financial crisis in 1997. This paper seeks to examine the contributions of FDI, trade openness, and liberalization to economic growth and development in the ASEAN-5

A note on rank constrained solutions to linear matrix equations

This preliminary note presents a heuristic for determining rank constrained solutions to linear matrix equations (LME). The method proposed here is based on minimizing a non-convex quadratic functional, which will hence-forth be termed as the \textit{Low-Rank-Functional} (LRF). Although this method lacks a formal proof/comprehensive analysis, for example in terms of a probabilistic guarantee for converging to a solution, the proposed idea is intuitive and has been seen to perform well in simulations. To that end, many numerical examples are provided to corroborate the idea

Individual voluntary participation in the United Kingdom: an overview of survey information

    No full text
The measurement of voluntary activity is not straightforward; definitional and methodological questions affect the responses. This is true within the context of the UK but also in other countries of the developed world (Archambault 1993, Kendall and Knapp 1993, Gidron and Katz 1998, Salamon and Sokolowski 2001). The existence of definitional difficulties and ambiguities has a detrimental impact on the quality of academic research and policy-making in this sphere. Firstly, it impedes orderly collection of statistical information on volunteering in administrative sources. Also, it complicates the collection of survey information: the absence of well-understood and widely-agreed concepts of voluntarism in the public mind introduces uncertainty in people’s responses. To date, however, there has not been an attempt to compare findings of different surveys systematically. This paper aims to fill the gap in research by reviewing the available surveys for the UK. It focuses specifically on the methods used to obtain information on volunteering and the comparability of the results generated by different surveys

Fabrication of 1/20th scale wind tunnel model of jaguar aircraft

Fabrication of scaled models of aircraft and other configurations for wind tunnel testing is a highly specialized task . This involves different types of precision machining operations to obtain the desired complex shapes with high levels of accuracy. Fabrication of models required for testing in the NAL wind tunnels were till recently undertaken in-house. The increased wind tunnel test requirements of various aerospace organisations in the Country, led to a substantial increase in the number of models to be fabricated. To meet the increased model fabrication work within the time frames of user organisations, it was decided to undertake part of the work in some external machine shop facilities under the broad supervision of NAL. The present exercise in among the first few attempts in that direction
