Economic consumption model revisited: infaq model based on al-Shaybani's levels of al-Kasb
This study attempts to investigate the economic ideas of al-Imām MuÍammad Ibn al-×asan al-Shaybānī (1986), focusing on his levels of al-Kasb. The study uses al-Shaybānī’s levels of al-Kasb to develop a theoretical Infāq model that integrates the material, spiritual, moral, social and legal dimensions. Thus the Infāq model is broader than the concept of consumption in modern economics. It also has some advantages over the Islamic consumption models developed by contemporary Muslim economists. The model identifies some major implications in terms of basic needs fulfillment, social Infāq and distributive justice. The primary features of this model are its simplicity and comprehensiveness. It is easy to understand yet it embodies the individual, social, material, spiritual, moral and legal dimensions into the individual’s spending decision making and behavior. The model is more realistic in understanding human behavior. It is growth friendly and instills the spirit of cooperation and social responsibility at the individual and social levels. It is suggested that future research further fine tune with some rigourous analysis

Bodies tell stories: Freudian hysteria in Fay Weldon's The Life and Loves of a She-Devil
Fay Weldon's The Life and Loves of a She-Devil deals with the nature of the hysteric psychological state women in abusive relationships or situations may suffer from and how they may react in either passively relenting to these conditions or taking control of their lives to achieve change. Thus, the question is raised as to whether the hysteric condition may be used as a means to an end. Women's Freudian hysterical symptoms are often physically manifested by anorexia nervosa, loss of speech (muteness), disturbed sleep, and alienation, among other maladies which may be subsumed under the category of symptoms of Freudian hysteria. Such symptoms, according to Freud, appear as the consequences of sexual violations a subject may have encountered, resulting in the manifestation of psychological disturbances characteristic of hysteria. This paper aims to investigate Fay Weldon's The Life and Loves of a She-Devil from Freud's theoretical perspectives on hysteria in order to indicate the influences of hysteria and its symptoms and reactions, focusing on the actions taken by the heroine of the novel under discussion to actualise herself
Interesting Presentation of Statin-induced Necrotizing Myopathy
Introduction: It is well know that statins can be associated with myopathy, myalgias and elevation in CPK. These aforementioned events resolve on discontinuation of statins. One unique presentation is autoimmune myopathy that persists despite discontinuation of statins. This entity requires immunosuppression following the insult in addition to statin discontinuation to help with symptoms.
Case description: 67-year-old male with past medical history of hepatitis C, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. He presents with diffuse weakness and muscle pain. Patient’s medications include atorvastatin and enalapril. Patient had CPK of 35,000.Enalapril and atorvastatin were discontinued and patient improved with intravenous fluids and steroids. Patient presents again 1 month later for elevated CPK of 19,000.Patient had a muscle biopsy done which showed signs of necrotizing myopathy. Patient was treated with intravenous solumedrol and was discharge on oral steroids. Patient continued to have weakness and presented again to the hospital few weeks later. At that time, patient had difficulty swallowing and changes in speech. Patient’s labs showed elevated CPK, Aldolase of 113.2 and myositis panel was negative. HMG-CoA reductase antibody test sent and was positive. Patient treated with intravenous immunoglobulin and intravenous steroids. Patient was discharged following improvement and had 3 months of weekly intravenous steroids and monthly intravenous immunoglobulin following discharge. One year later, patient presents from primary care office for elevated CPK of13,000 and generalized weakness. Patient given intravenous solumedrol for 5 days and intravenous fluids and his symptoms improved. Patient was discharged with a prednisone taper over 4 weeks. Patient presented again 2 months later with progressive weakness and muscle pain. At that time patient was treated with intravenous fluids and intravenous steroids again. Patient was started on a long prednisone taper and started on Rituximab. Patient with continued improvement in symptoms but did not return back to baseline strength.
Discussion: It is important to recognize complex disease processes. Despite having stopped the statin, patient continued to have recurrent episodes of rhabdomyolysis. With the proper follow-up and understanding of the disease, patient could have had much fewer complications, hospitalizations and strain on his life. This entity is very hard to recognize as it may appear to be a single event of rhabdomyolysis. Further research needs to be done for deeper understanding of this disease process. This disease may appear very rare and it is but it is also likely to be very underrecognized.https://scholarlycommons.henryford.com/merf2020caserpt/1088/thumbnail.jp
Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura Presenting as an Acute Coronary Syndrome
Introduction: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura is a thrombotic microangiopathy caused by severely reduced activity of the von Willebrand factor-cleaving protease ADAMTS13. It is considered a medical emergency and could be fatal if appropriate medical management if not initiated in time. Rarely, it can present as an acute coronary syndrome.
Case presentation: We present a case of an 80-year-old female with a past medical history of hypertension and irritable bowel syndrome who presented to the emergency department with chest pain. Her chest pain was centrally located, exertional and relieved by sublingual nitroglycerin. The patient also reported having dizziness, generalized fatigue and headache. On arrival, she was noted to be hypertensive but otherwise hemodynamically stable. Physical examination was unremarkable. Laboratory evaluation revealed elevated high sensitivity troponin with an initial value of 434 ng/L (reference range/L) and peaking at 817 ng/L, elevated creatinine at 1.61 mg/dL (reference range
Discussion: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is described by the classic pentad of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, renal involvement, central nervous system manifestations and fever. Our patient presented with chest pain and neurological symptoms and was found to have anemia, thrombocytopenia and elevated creatinine. Those findings with elevated troponin and EKG changes should raise the suspicion of TTP-related acute coronary syndrome. The exact mechanism of how TTP can cause acute coronary syndrome is not well understood, especially that this has been rarely described but is thought to be secondary to thrombosis of the small vessels supplying the myocardium. Given its rarity, there is no consensus regarding the exact management strategy but emergent plasmapheresis should be started to improve blood counts and improve clinical symptoms. Coronary angiopathy should be deferred until blood counts improve and as it may exacerbate TTP. For our patient, immediate initiation of plasmapheresis and steroids corrected her laboratory abnormalities and relieved her symptoms.
Conclusion: This case represents a rare disease process that required plasmapheresis and immunosuppressives.https://scholarlycommons.henryford.com/merf2020caserpt/1112/thumbnail.jp
Integrating al-Turath al-Islami to medern university curriculum: issues and the need for a benchmark
The objectives and performance measures of Islamic Banking based on Maqasid Al-Shari‟Ah framework.
Seketika pertumbuhan perbankan Islam mencapai tahap yang memberangsangkan, kajian-kajian mengenai prestasi perbankan Islam menunjukkan bahawa bank-bank Islam masih ketinggalan dibelakang perbankan konvensional.
While the Islamic banking (IB) industry has achieved a remarkable growth, studies have shown that the performance of Islamic banks is trailing behind their conventional counterpart
Developing al-Siyasah al-Shar'iyyah Framework for Contemporary Public Policy Analysis
Al-Siyasah al-Shar'iyyah (SS) in Islamic history had played significant role in guiding and regulating the relations, activities and policies of Muslim states towards meeting Maqasid al-Shari'ah. Over time, this science became conservative and overloaded with general Shari'ah rules, and thus deficient of establishing a robust system of public policy formulation and analysis comparable to the current well developed conventional public policy system. Most of the literatures on al-Siyasah al-Shar'iyyah, past and present, still discuss the subject within the general principles of the Shari'ah. The present paper adopts content and thematic analyses to develop SS theoretical framework. It has used the new framework to present policy cases in Islamic Turath scientifically. Once refined, the new SS framework can be used for contemporary public policy analysis from Islamic perspective. The paper has set new direction for presenting SS scientifically that suits contemporary public policy analysis
Islamic banking: an exploratory study of public perception in Uganda
Purpose – Islamic banking (IB) has been globally embraced by over 76 countries, with over $2tn in assets.
Despite this remarkable progress, there are countries that are yet to fully embrace IB (Uganda inclusive). All the
ongoing initiatives in Uganda (at policy level) to establish IB require supporting study of public awareness and
attitudes toward IB. This will stimulate a down-top approach to the feasibility of IB and policymaking, thus
providing a fertile ground for wider consideration of the majority stakeholders’ views in formulating standards
and policy guidelines regulating IB. This study aims to explore the perception of Ugandans towards IB.
Design/methodology/approach – The study is exploratory in nature and uses a quantitative method.
Out of the 400 questionnaires distributed, only 354 were usable for further analysis. SPSS 21 was used to
analyze data using descriptive statistics and factor analysis.
Findings – Major findings indicate that unlike non-Muslims, Muslims are more knowledgeable about the IB
culture, although both groups have low awareness about IB terminologies. There were inconsistences in
Muslim and non-Muslim attitudes toward IB, for instance; while non-Muslims are motivated by
“profitability”, Muslims’ inclination to IB is mainly due to “religious and profitability combined”. Both groups
demonstrated some uniformity in their selection criteria of banks such as “third party influence”, although
they are inconsistent in other factors.
Originality/value – The novelty of this study rests in its down-top approach to feasibility of IB by
gauging the perception of majority stakeholders before IB is established. The study is conducted in a
heterogeneous society unlike many of similar studies that have focused on Muslim majority countries. As
most studies (with similar background) are at least 18 years old, this study remains outstanding in gauging
the dynamics of stakeholders in Muslim minority countries which have yet established IB
IMPACT OF PROTEAN CAREER ORIENTATION ON ACADEMICS' CAREER SUCCESS: THE MEDIATING ROLE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL CAPITAL
Most people seek success in their career due to the prominent role of career in shaping their lifestyle from the first day they started working with organization. However, some people feel unsuccessful in their career. Hence. the main purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating role of psychological capital (PsyCap) between protean career orientation (PCO) and career success. Further, this study is quantitative in nature based on primary data which were collected from full-time lecturers teaching in Sudanese public universities. Out of the 250 self-administrated questionnaires, 209 were returned for final analysis. The data obtained were analyzed by using the Smart-PLS 3.2.6 software techniques. Besides the context of this study, another uniqueness of this study was with the model in which career success was assessed as a formative construct. However, in the past studies, it was assessed as a reflective construct. The findings indicated that PsyCap was not only an important predictor of career success in the academic atmosphere, but it also played a positive mediator between PCO and career success. The paper closed with implications and conclusion.  Keywords: Academics’ career success, psychological capital, positive psychology, and protean career orientation
The Mediation Role of Resource Accessibility between Perceived Social Support and e-Entrepreneurial Intention of Female Students in Saudi Arabia
Entrepreneurship has become highly popular among younger people due to the booming of cyber platforms, specifically in online businesses. However, the motivation behind students’ aspirations to start online businesses is yet to be rarely examined within the extant literature. Consequently, the current study seeks to explore the mediating role of resource accessibility on the relationship between perceived social support and e-entrepreneurial intention among female students in Saudi Arabia. The study involved distribution of 376 online questionnaires among undergraduate female students studying business related subjects in public and private universities in Saudi Arabia. The study findings suggest that perceived social support has a positive influence on e-entrepreneurial intention and resource accessibility among the students. Moreover, there is an indication from the findings that resource accessibility plays a significant mediating role between perceived social support and e-entrepreneurial intention. The study findings contribute to the extant literature of e-entrepreneurship, demonstrating the significance of supporting students to start their own online businesses by providing them full access to the available resources.
