Quantum rotational band model for the Heisenberg molecular magnet Mo72Fe30

We derive the low temperature properties of the molecular magnet Mo72Fe30, where 30 Fe(3+) paramagnetic ions occupy the sites of an icosidodecahedron and interact via isotropic nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange. The key idea of our model (J.S. & M.L.) is that the low-lying excitations form a sequence of rotational bands, i.e., for each such band the excitation energies depend quadratically on the total spin quantum number. For temperatures below 50 mK we predict that the magnetisation is described by a staircase with 75 equidistant steps as the magnetic field is increased up to a critical value and saturated for higher fields. For higher temperatures thermal broadening effects wash out the staircase and yield a linear ramp below the critical field, and this has been confirmed by our measurements (R.M.). We demonstrate that the lowest two rotational bands are separated by an energy gap of 0.7 meV, and this could be tested by EPR and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. We also predict the occurrence of resonances at temperatures below 0.1 K in the proton NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate associated with level crossings. As rotational bands characterize the spectra of many magnetic molecules our method opens a new road towards a description of their low-temperature behaviour which is not otherwise accessible.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for Europhysics Letter

Sensitivity Analysis for the Manufacturing of Thermoplastic e-Preforms for Active Textile Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites

AbstractActive fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites offer a high application potential for lightweight structures capable for series production. By the integration of functional components like material-embedded piezoceramic actuators or sensors the structural behaviour becomes actively controllable and manipulable. Currently, a wide application of such adaptive structures is mainly restricted by the lack of robust manufacture technologies. Therefore, these investigations are performed to develop and realise a novel robust and efficient manufacture process capable for series production. This process bases on a material and actuator adapted hot pressing technique. In this context, special regard is given to the sub process e-preforming. There a thermoplastic film is assembled with thermoplastic compatible piezoceramic modules and the necessary conductive paths. By the development of a special e-preforming unit and the corresponding parameter investigations an adapted manufacture of so called e-preforms can be realised

EnglishIsabelle Modler: The Study-Related Training of Journalists at the Institute for Promoting the Training of Young Media Experts (ifp). A Survey of the Graduates About forty years ago, study-related training programms were started at the Institute for Promoting the Training of Young Media Experts in Munich (Germany). This programme offers Catholic university students of all faculties studies and practical experiences in print, radio, TV and internet over a period of three years. In 2010, on the occasion of the 40 years anniversary of ifp, an online research was done to find out how the graduates value the programme and what chances it gi- ves them on the job market. Most graduates regard their multimedia studies in connection with practical experiences in general as a good preparation for their work and helpful for a quick entry in their job. Most of them do not have critical remarks to the programme. As for the importance of their faith, they confessed to live it but are not influenced by it in their work. The graduates do not see the ifp as a Catholic ideological forge. This view could be regarded as a good resolution of the splits between the intention of the institute’s Catholic founders and the ideal of journalism to report unbiassed and independent.

An Experimental Approach for the Determination of the Mechanical Properties of Base-Excited Polymeric Specimens at Higher Frequency Modes

Structures made of the thermoplastic polymer polyether ether ketone (PEEK) are widely used in dynamically-loaded applications due to their high-temperature resistance and high mechanical properties. To design these dynamic applications, in addition to the well-known stiffness and strength properties the vibration-damping properties at the given frequencies are required. Depending on the application, frequencies from a few hertz to the ultrasonic range are of interest here. To characterize the frequency-dependent behavior, an experimental approach was chosen and applied to a sample polymer PEEK. The test setup consists of a piezoelectrically driven base excitation of the polymeric specimen and the non-contact measurement of the velocity as well as the surface temperature. The beam’s bending vibrations were analyzed by means of the Timoshenko theory to determine the polymer’s storage modulus. The mechanical loss factor was calculated using the half-power bandwidth method. For PEEK and a considered frequency range of 1 kHz to 16 kHz, a storage modulus between 3.9 GPa and 4.2 GPa and a loss factor between 9 103 and 17 103 were determined. For the used experimental parameters, the resulting mechanical properties were not essentially influenced by the amplitude of excitation, the duration of excitation, or thermal degrad.ation due to self-heating, but rather slightly by the clamping force within the fixation area

High velocity impact on generic CFRP blade specimen: baseline free method for impact localisation and damage assessment on complex structure

    Get PDF
Nowadays components made of unidirectional composite materials are largely diffused in many engineering fields, such as automotive, railways, marine and aerospace. Main drawback of this class of materials lies in their low out-of-plane properties making them very sensible to impulsive loads such as impact events. After a collision with an external object, composites structures could be affected by damage, sometimes not visible from visual inspections (barely visible damage) hence with detrimental consequences on structure resistance and strength. Therefore, it is fundamental in terms of safety to continuously assess the healthy state of structures during their life and determine whether an impact event has occurred and if it caused damage or not. This work proposes a baseline free methodology to determine the coordinates of very high velocity impact on complex structures and evaluate if damage has occurred during the impact by only acquiring signal during the impact event. The technique overcomes the common limitations of previous technique presented in literature, i.e. a priori knowledge of mechanical properties, vibration response analysis, wave propagation direction dependency, sensor locations. The routine developed is based first on the estimation of the power of the acoustic emission generated by impact events, at sensors location, then the power information through the entire structure is reconstructed exploiting radial basis function network. The actual impact estimation is finally obtained using a weighted method. Furthermore, damage assessment is conducted with a novel method based on Hilbert–Huang transform and mode decomposition. Experimental tests were performed on a generic carbon fibre reinforced polymers blade specimen with a complex stacking sequence and embedded sensors. Two test configurations at different velocities were considered: one at 90 m s−1 and one at 190 m s−1. Before and afterwards the actual impact tests, the blade was excited as well with a modal hammer (pre and post impact). The results from the impact analysis highlighted the validity and reliability of the proposed method, with a high level of accuracy in terms of impact localisation estimation, and qualitative integrity state was effectively evaluated

International audienceRecent technological advances, such as increased CPU/GPU processing speed, along with the miniaturization of devices and sensors, have created new possibilities for integrating immersive technologies in music and performance art. Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) have become increasingly interesting as mobile device platforms, such as up-to-date smartphones, with necessary CPU resources entered the consumer market. In combination with recent web technologies, any mobile device can simply connect with a browser to a local server to access the latest technology. The web platform also eases the integration of collabora-tive situated media in participatory artwork. In this paper , we present the interactive music improvisation piece 'Border,' premiered in 2018 at the Beyond Festival at the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM). This piece explores the interaction between a performer and the audience using web-based applications-including AR, real-time 3D audio/video streaming, advanced web audio, and gesture-controlled virtual instruments-on smart mobile devices
