    Optimization temperature sensitivity using the optically detected magnetic resonance spectrum of a nitrogen-vacancy center ensemble

    Temperature sensing with nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers using quantum techniques is very promising and further development is expected. Recently, the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectrum of a high-density ensemble of the NV centers was reproduced with noise parameters [inhomogeneous magnetic field, inhomogeneous strain (electric field) distribution, and homogeneous broadening] of the NV center ensemble. In this study, we use ODMR to estimate the noise parameters of the NV centers in several diamonds. These parameters strongly depend on the spin concentration. This knowledge is then applied to theoretically predict the temperature sensitivity. Using the diffraction-limited volume of 0.1 micron^3, which is the typical limit in confocal microscopy, the optimal sensitivity is estimated to be around 0.76 mK/Hz^(1/2) with an NV center concentration of 5.0e10^17/cm^3. This sensitivity is much higher than previously reported sensitivities, demonstrating the excellent potential of temperature sensing with NV centers.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Residual Neutron-Induced Radionuclides in Samples Exposed to the Nuclear Explosion over Hiroshima:Comparison of the Measured Values with the Calculated Values : I. DOSIMETRY

    金沢大学大学院自然科学研究科物質情報解析金沢大学理学部Residual radionuclides induced by neutrons from the Hiroshima atomic bomb have been measured at Kanazawa University for these 14 years. The results of ^Eu, ^Eu and ^Co are reviewed in this paper. Where appropriate, an attempt is made to provide our new data with the aim of reinterpreting our published data. From the comparison of the measured values with the calculated values by DS86 methodology, we may point out here: (1) that close agreement was found between measured and calculated values for the specific radioactivity of ^Eu in the samples exposed at ground ranges between 320 m and 720 m; (2) that the calculated/measured ratios for the specific radioactivity of ^Eu were, however, larger than unity in the vicinity of ground zero and smaller than unity at locations more than 1000 m apart from ground zero; (3) that, in the vicinity of ground zero, epithermal neutron fluence evaluated from a set of measured specific radioactivities of ^Eu, ^Eu and ^Co showed a close agreement with the calculated result, whereas thermal neutron fluence evaluated in the same way was different from the calculated result; and (4) that the depth distribution of the specific radioactivity of ^Eu in a wall sample which was exposed at the location 320m from ground zero approximately agreed with the calculated result

    Experimental and Theoretical Analysis of Noise Strength and Environmental Correlation Time for Ensembles of Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Diamond

    NV centers in diamond have been considered as an important building block for the realization of quantum information processing such as quantum simulation, quantum memory, and quantum metrology. To maximize the potential of the NV centers, it is essential to understand the mechanism of the decoherence. Existing theories predicted a relationship between the coherence time and spin concentration (a sum of the concentration of the NV center and P1 center) in diamond. However, a systematic experimental study of the spin concentration dependence of the coherence time was still missing. Here, we experimentally and theoretically investigate the Hahn echo decay curve with several diamond samples with different spin concentration. The Hahn echo results show that we observe a non-exponential decay for the low spin concentration while an exponential decay is dominant for the high spin concentration. By fitting the decay curve with a theoretical model, we show that both the amplitude and correlation time of the environmental noise have a clear dependence on the spin concentration. These results are essential to optimize the NV center concentration as high-performance quantum devices, particularly as quantum sensors

    Infantile-onset inflammatory bowel disease in a patient with Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome: a case report

    Abstract Background Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a rare, genetically heterogeneous disorder that manifests oculocutaneous albinism together with bleeding diatheses that reflect a platelet storage pool deficiency. Ten genetic subtypes of this autosomal recessive condition have been described to date. Some patients with Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome type 1, 4, or 6 develop Crohn’s-like inflammatory bowel disease at any age including early childhood, but most often in adolescence or young adulthood. Here we report infantile-onset of inflammatory bowel disease in a patient with Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome type 1 who responded to infliximab. Case presentation A Japanese boy, the second child of non-consanguineous healthy parents, was born with chalky white skin, silvery-white hair, and gray eyes, representing oculocutaneous albinism. He developed frequent diarrhea and fever accompanied by weight loss at 6 months, and was diagnosed with Crohn’s-like inflammatory bowel disease based on the endoscopic finding of longitudinal ulcerations in the colon and the histopathologic finding of nonspecific chronic inflammation without granulomas at the age of 11 months. Treatment with an elemental diet, salazosulfapyridine, and corticosteroids failed to improve clinical or laboratory abnormalities, and the diarrhea became bloody. At 13 months he began treatment with infliximab, which produced marked improvement followed by clinical remission. Endoscopy at 20 months demonstrated healing of the colonic mucosa. At 22 months he is in sustained clinical remission receiving only infliximab. Because albinism with inflammatory bowel disease suggested Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome, we performed genetic screening using next-generation sequencing in a targeted gene panel analysis for primary immunodeficiency disease and/or inflammatory bowel disease. The patient proved to have a compound heterozygous mutation of the HPS1 gene resulting in Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome type 1. Conclusions We consider this report to be the first account of type 1 Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome with infantile-onset of inflammatory bowel disease. Early administration of infliximab was effective. We recommend next-generation sequencing for patients with very early-onset inflammatory bowel disease suspected to be monogenic
