Students' Evaluation for the Network-Utilized Class in ""Virtual University"" Project

    Get PDF
All of the 16 faculty members of the Department of Teaching Japanese as a Second Language (TJSL) joined in ""Virtual University"" (VU) project and developed 18 VOD (Video on Demand) materials named ""Invitation to TJSL Research"" about 30-40 minutes long each. They were applied in the ""Network Class"" using ""Quiz"" and ""Bulletin Board"" functions of WebCT to compare the conventional class. The students' evaluation showed that they almost equally favored both classes. The result suggests that the developed materials are effective and they are useful to discuss what to do and what could be problems for the future. The activities in the project and other problems related to VU matters are also discussed

An Evaluation of the Network-type CALL Contents by Korean Learners of Japanese

The network-type of Japanese CALL contents "Our Daily Life" based on systematic teaching theory of TSACA (The Three-step Auditory Comprehension Approach: Takefuta 1997) was developed and applied to Korean Learners of Japanese. They were given the pre/post tests and the learners' impressions were collected. Divided into the high-ranking group and the low-ranking group with the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, the score and impressions were analyzed. The difference of the scores of the two tests was significant, and the both groups showed a high evaluation for the contents. Moreover, high and low evaluated items of their impressions were closely examined and the features of the contents were made clear

Present Situations and Problems of Information Network Environments in the Faculty of Education

The Information Network Committee, Faculty of Education, manages to maintain the host computer called Dionysus, which provides network services for all faculty members and students. The network server has been maintained successfully so far by the administrative members, providing continual and stable services such as e-mail and WWW home-pages, while there exist some problems to be discussed. To seek more stable foundations for the future development, this paper describes the present situations and problems of the information network environments in the Faculty of Education, Hiroshima University

How do students evaluate VOD materials of ""Research of Teaching Japanese as a Second Language"" used on WebCT?

A survey was carried out to investigate how students evaluate VOD (Video on Demand) materials of ""Research of Teaching Japanese as a Second Language"" used on WebCT. 30 students who take the class of ""Psychology of Second Language Learning"" experienced a VOD material of ""Psychology of Second Language Learning"" about 30 minutes in the classroom. They were then asked to evaluate the VOD material on 5-point scale (1: agree~5: disagree). The inquiries were made concerning the following 3 aspects: (1) degree of understanding of contents compared with the conventional class (8 items), (2) impression of forms in material construction (6 items), (3) imagery of the VOD materials (6 items). Mean rating scores on each item were calculated and Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficients were calculated between items. The main findings were as follows: (a) degree of understanding of contents was evaluated in slightly negative direction in comparison with original lectures, (b) impression of forms in material construction was evaluated in positive direction except for ""keeping good stress in the class"", (c) imagery of the VOD materials was evaluated both in positive and negative directions. It was indicated that the VOD materials could be more efficiently used in the conventional classes. It was also suggested that the VOD materials should be developed in order to resolve some difficulties (e.g., students' self-learning, demonstration of psychological experiments) in the conventional classes, especially conventional lectures
