Continuous positive airway pressure ameliorated severe pulmonary hypertension associated with obstructive sleep apnea.

A 52-year-old obese woman was admitted to our institution for evaluation of dyspnea and pulmonary hypertension (PH). Polysomnography revealed severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with an apnea hypopnea index of 99.8. Treatment with nocturnal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) resulted in correction of daytime hypoxemia, hypercapnia, and near-normalization of pulmonary artery pressure. To our knowledge, this is the most severe case of OSA-associated PH (approximately70 mmHg) reported to date, and it was successfully treated with nocturnal CPAP. This case demonstrates that OSA should be considered and polysomnography performed in all patients with PH, irrespective of severity, and that nocturnal CPAP has therapeutic effects on both OSA and daytime PH.</p

The Role of Laminin on Cultured Human Glioma Cell Proliferation and Metastasis in Nude Mice and Rats

It is difficult to propose simple idea in which cell adhesion molecules can he related to tumor growth and metastasis. The integrins function as extracellular matrix receptors binding to such proteins as collagen, laminin, and fibronectin. In this study, the cell culture of human glioma cells were xenografted to nude mice and rats associated with laminin injection, resulting in tumor growth and metastasis in the large amount of laminin group. In nude mouse experiment, cultured glioma cells were xenografted in the back of cutaneous with 10μg and 100μg laminin. The tumor lump of the 100μg laminin group grew faster and larger than the 10μg laminin group. In nude rat experiment, cultured glioma cells were xenografted intravascularly in the tail with l0μg and 100μg laminin. Of the 6 cases, 4 (66.7%) showed metastasis in the lungs after 2 weeks in the 100μg laminin group. However, metastasis was not detected in 10μg laminin group. These results suggest that quantities of laminin may play an important role in tumor growth and metastasis

Objective An experiment was conducted to assess the antioxidant contents and activities of colored rice grains and to evaluate their nutritive characteristics in terms of chemical composition and in situ ruminal degradation. Methods Ten cultivars of colored rice grains (Oryza sativa L.) collected from several areas of Japan were studied, and control rice without pigment, maize, barley, and wheat grains were used as control grains. Their chemical compositions, pigment, polyphenol contents, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and degradation characteristics were determined. Results The starch contents of the colored rice grains were in the range of 73.5% to 79.6%, similar to that of the control rice grain. The black and red rice grains contained anthocyanin (maximum: 5,045.6 μg/g) and proanthocyanidin (maximum: 3,060.6 μg/g) at high concentrations as their principal pigments, respectively. There were significantly (pbarley ≥rice>maize. The colored rice grains also included the most-digestible starch, since their potential degradable fraction and actual degradability at 48 h incubation were almost 100%. Conclusion Colored rice grains have high potential to be used as antioxidant sources in addition to starch sources in ruminants
